Moms, has anyone had a baby with a rash that just would not go away? My son has been battling a rash since Feb. and the doctors cant seem to figure out what is going on. The weird things is that it is only on his face and diaper area and by diaper area. He has been on steriods on and off (creams) and antibiotics. The steriod creams seemed to help but as soon as we stopped taking them within four days the rash was back completely. We have been to a dermatologist and we got a weird answer that our pediatrician things is bogus. So now we have an appointment with a pediatric dermatologist but they cant get us in until Aug!
We has had him tested for seasonal allergies and food allergies and the only thing that came back with elivated levels was seasonal allergies. We have tried to figure out what has changed since this all came on but have found nothing.
Any ideas or recommendations would be so appreciated!!!
Thanks
Two of my sons have a similar rash. My 8 month old has had it since birth. They gave me cortisone cream and it helps, but if I dont use it one day the rash comes back. I was also told to see a dermatologist in arizona, I just moved so I will try to take him to one here and see what they say. On my older son the rash went away when he was around 3. Good luck and I hope it goes away.

My son had a rash when he was a baby. We found out that it was eczema. After he stopped drinking formula and milk, the eczema went away. About a year ago, he started drinking milk again and the eczema came back. It's pretty obvious to me that my son is allergic to something in milk. Could that be what is happening to your son?

Hi,
My son started to develop a rash all over his face and had red raised bumps all over his chest. The covering PCP took one look at my son and asked if I was supplementing breastmilk with fornmula. I had been - my son was always hungry and i couldn't keep up with the demand. He asked if the formula was milk based. Yes it was. My son had all the classic symptom's of a food allergy. Steroid creams (hydrocortizone) helped to get rid of the rash. The rash did not come back when we removed milk from his diet.
My suggestion is to monitor what you feed your son. Some common culprits for rashes due to food allergies are:
Milk
Egg
Seafood
Tree nuts
Peanuts
Gluten (wheat products)
Soy
I would try withholding everything on the above mentioned list from your son for a week. Make sure you read all the ingredients on all food labels. Sometimes milk and eggs are an added ingredient, but have a different name like "Whey" which is milk. Avoid chocolate - it tends to have dairy, and trace nut products
After he is rash free, introduce milk/milk products first and look for a reaction. If you see the rash - bingo! If no rash, try eggs next. Caution - if your son, has not been introduced to anything else on the list, do not introduce!
Have the food panel done with the Pediatric Allergist. We knew my son was allergic to milk and we suspected egg, but we were blown away with the peanut allergy diagnosis. We had not introduced nuts and because we followed a recommendation not to give nuts to our child until 2 years of age, we might very well have saved our child's life. The food panel was done at 18 months old.
As a precaution..you might want to keep children's benedryl on hand as well. Benedryl has worked very well for my son.
Good luck, and know this - if your son has a food allergy, it can be a blessing in disguise. Because of the allergies, we eat a lot healthier and my children have a love of fresh vegetables and fruit due to us not having a lot of choices as far as pre-packaged snacks go.
One more thing - if you are breastfeeding, you'll need to avoid the foods on the list as well.

Does your child attend daycare? My child had a similar rash that would just not go away. It turned out to be the latex gloves the caregivers were using. We switched to vinyl and the rash went away immediately. Now everytime someone uses the latex gloves by mistake, we know instantly. Poor little guy- I hope this helps!

My daughter had a rash not for quite as long, after changing doctors and using all the creams they suggested/prescribed they said it was ringworm. Now...we are clean people with no animals, how she got it I have NO CLUE! What we used was Lotrimin (spelling?) (It's the athlete's foot medicine)within 4 days it was cleared up and has never came back. We even used the equate brand, it's worth a shot to try it before August. We put it on her twice a day. Hope this helps.

Hi A.!
Have they thought it could be eczema? Two of my children have it and it's usually on their faces and their diaper area too. Sometimes it's a rough patch, and other times it's more pimple-like...with the raised red spots. Just thought I'd try and suggest something. Only other thing I can think of is maybe he is allergic to the diapers he is wearing?? I know it doesn't explain what's on his face though. My son has very sensitive skin (he has eczema) and when I put a certain brand of diapers on him he breaks out...and it doesn't make any difference what I try to treat it with. It will only go away if I stop using those diapers.

Hi A.,
I'm not sure about his face, but have you ever tried corn starch on his bottom? Take a white hankerchief and fill with cornstarch and form into a ball and use a rubberband to tighten. This works to lightly pat the skin with cornstarch. For severe rash at first you may want to just sprinkle cornstarch on. Also huggies has some wonderful rash cream for sensitive skin that you might try. It does sound like it could be eczema...here is a link I found for you that might help... http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/baby/babyills/babyrash/1...
Hope you are able to get him all cleared up soon. Have a great day!

What do you wash your baby's clothes in. I used dreft for a long time. Of course I can't imagine regular detergent would all of the sudden cause a rash. When my oldest daughter (8) was a baby her pediatrician recommended a product called Diaper Derm. It is made here in St. Louis (Chesterfield to be exact). We also use it with her sister. The phone number is ###-###-#### or you can write to them at Diaper Derm, Inc. PO Box 3886, Chesterfield MO 63006-3886.
This stuff is good. You put it on the rash and the next day it's gone.

Not sure what your son eats but I know when my son eats alot of oranges, he loves the mandarian oranges so he has them plain right from the jar or they come in jello. He was eating them alot and I just came to the determination that the bad rash he is getting is from the orange or possibly if your son is eating alot of citris foods, it could make the diaper rash appear, not sure about the face tho.
Hope that helps

I went through something similiar with my son who was about 18 months at the time. His rash was mostly on his thighs and his upper arms.We were told so many different things from eczema even to scabies! We scoured our house and really freaked out the church nursery with that one! We eventually saw a great pediatric dermatologist who fit us in last minute. Her name is Dr. Elaine Siegfried. She came up with Gianotti-Crosti Syndrome, which I understood to be a viral or bacterial infection that manifests itself with a rash. There really was no treatment for it except for it to run it's course and she gave us things to watch for if it got worse. When I thought back to before he had the rash, he had a pretty nasty cold for about a week. Maybe this could be something to ask the doctors about. I'd be happy to get you the phone number for the peds dermatalogist if you would like.
Good luck,
C.
