RAK Suggestions Not Too $$$

I have a dream of a daughter. This is the 3rd year she does not want anything for Christmas so I want to do something special for her. So I decided on a half a day of RAK (Random Acts of Kindness). I talked to her teacher and she agreed for me to take her off from school for the afternoon.

The plan is to show up at school with pizza for her class and snatch her away for the remaining of the day. I want to really make this special for her.

Just to give you an idea of how she is like...
She is kind and considerate. When she shares she always give the other person the better choice. " She can have this book because it is in better condition."

She is very loving and protective of her sister who is not only autistic but also has ADHD. She told her bestie that she did not appreciate her referring to her sister as annoying and that if she (bestie) feels that way then they can not be friends anymore.

She does her homework without being told

Her reading scores put her at a 9th grade level. Her NPR is 99%
Math scores 95%

She was awarded as one of the role models in school

She is also in student council

She is 8 years old and in the 3rd grade.

We don't believe in rewarding behavior or academic achievement. We did acknowledge her successes and she is aware that we are proud of her. This is why this I want to make this special for her. A chance for her to do something good and feel good about. Somehow rewarding her without actually rewarding her.

Please shoot me with suggestions

So far planning on
leaving money at vending machines
paying for the person behind us at the drive thru
leaving dollars at the dollar store toy aisle

Other than these we are stumped. We want to do this without recognition. I also want to teach her to give whether it is deserved or not. So please help.

*I have to add this kid brings an extra dollar to school for bagel day "just in case" someone forgot to bring a buck. (one of my proudest moments.)
She also has chosen to eat her left over snack and give her unopened one to a classmate who forgot to pack an extra snack for an after school activity.

BTW just so you know.. She is not hard on herself. The things she like just does not happen to be the same things most 8 year olds like (",).

She treats herself in books lots and lots lol. She also has craft fixes she indulge in, art classes, girl scouts, guitar lessons, regular trips to nerdville (self proclaimed nerd). She can stay at Barnes for 4 hrs straight or the library. Her favorite spot is Kings bookstore 4 massive floors of used books. Regular visits to the museum. Seriously, we treat her and she treats herself well.

What can I do next?

Because she already does random acts of kindness I wonder if this is the most fun way to have time with her. I suggest that doing something for her would be more appropriate. Sounds like she may need help in learning how to treat herself with kindness. Just a thought.

Later: Not treating herself hard is not the same as treating herself as someone as special as the people she is treating.

I get what you are saying about the RAK...but what about a mini-shopping spree at the local toy store for your local tree of sharing? You guys could shop (always fun when shopping for others), wrap the gifts and then go drop them of at what ever local places you have that are accepting donations?

You could also go to the post office and pay for someones shipping?
Drop off some dog/cat food at the local animal shelter?
Donate $ to SNAP or at your local electric company?
Go to your local tree farm and pay for someones Christmas tree?!!
Take toys to the kids in the intensive care units at your local hospital?

~Your daughter sounds amazing! I think she deserves a little rewarding...hope you guys stop for a hot chocolate or something while you are out!

i saw a lady do this with her kids it probably came from pinterest. and i have way too many pins to find it easily,

this woman did it for HER birthday, i think when she turned 40 so maybe google 40 ( or 30) random acts of kindness.

let DD pick out a new shirt and also one for the women's shelter??

buy icecream and pay for the next 2 peoples's cones.

When my daughter and I go into a store where there are Salvation Army bell ringers we always buy them a bottle of cold water. Maybe you could take some water around to people like that. We also deliver Meals on
Wheels. They can always use help. You have taught her well. God bless you, Momma!

I think it would be nice to leave some money at the car wash, right by the money receptacle! I had a lady give me some money at a car wash once, and she asked that in return, I leave 50 cents next time I wash my car. She said lots of people run out of money and don't get to finish washing their car. So I did that for years, until I started going to the auto car wash. How about buying someone a coffee on the way to school, maybe for the crossing guard, if you have one? Or do you have some really good coupons to leave at the grocery store? I have found coupons on the shelf next to something I was buying, and it was a nice treat. Your daughter sounds like a lovely little girl, and it is easy to see why you are proud of her. Hope you have a wonderful time!

Taking food to the food bank would be a nice thing to do. (Our local food bank ran out of food around the holidays last year, I recently found out.)

Does she like animals? How about playing with the kittens or puppies at the SPCA for the afternoon (if your SPCA allows this; ours does)?

By the way - I LOVE your idea for a gift!! I might copy this with my older daughter (who is in 5th grade). What a nice thing to do - giving back instead of asking for more. I love it.

Make a nice thank you card for public servants who don't get thanked enough, people like police (fire fighters always get the thank yous, says my ex-cop husband :) ), mail carriers, school custodial staff, etc. Just something that says you are appreciated.
Our family does a blanket and towel drive for local animal shelters. We ask our neighbors for old, torn, bleach-stained, etc blankets and towels for the shelters to use as animal bedding. We always get a great response, as most people have one or two laying around. The shelters really appreciate them, as they go through them really quickly! You can often drop things off in a receiving bin, you can even sneak over at night :)
I have also left flowers on my neighbors' doorsteps, that is fun. Tie a flower to every mailbox on your street??
Rake someone's yard/shovel snow?
At my office I received a cute little bag filled with holiday treats that had a note that said I should/could give a similar gift, anonymously, to another person to keep it going. That was lots of fun, too!
Great idea!

What a sweetheart. You've raised a lovely girl.

I like all of your ideas. Maybe you could also give her some money and get on worldvisiongifts.org?

They give wonderful gifts to needy children and families all over the world...things that matter, like goats, chickens, ducks, rabbits, clean drinking water, school supplies, food, etc.

What fun! Great idea! Love the drop off pizza for the class.

-Drop by a senior home and sing Christmas carols

-One time, after an embarrassing need to have a fire truck drop by to check if a lamp I plugged in had started a fire in the wall (I smelled burning), I dropped off cookies at the fire house. Every single buff guy dropped his jaw when I brought them!

-Hot coffee or soup for the mail carrier

-Drop off goodies for the mail carriers at the post office

-Volunteer to ring the bell for the Salvation Army

-Leave a gift at a front door

-Bring a balloon to someone--children's hospital in Ann Arbor or downtown?

-Remember the bus drivers!

-Are you near the Coast Guard? They have to go rescue ice fishermen from Lake St. Clair every year.

-Get bus tokens and stop by bus stops and give them to people waiting

-Practice reading a story in a dramatic way and then find some kids to read it to.

-Go out to eat and leave a big tip

-Bring gifts to your favorite wait people and other folks you often meet when shopping.

-Go Christmas carolling in the neighborhood and give each home a small gift. If offered money, collect it for charity.

-Hang bird seed ornaments on trees in a park

-If applicable, shovel the neighbor's walk without being asked

-Decorate your car with a wreath for the journey

Have a Merry Christmas!
