Hi Mommas!

We have an intense rabbit problem in our neighborhood. They are mowing down my liriopes! They do every year. We have tried several repellent products, but nothing seems to keep them away for long. It's like they know it's a fake.

Does anyone have a good suggestion? Thank you so much!

What can I do next?

Sprinkle red pepper all around and on the plants that are getting eaten by the bunnies. ( If that doesn't work I'll bring my greyhound over and we can watch him chase them away LOL :)

Hi S.-
Rabbits drive us crazy also. Every year when I plant my annuals I feel like I am setting out a salad bar for them! BUT, I have found a great product at Calloways Nursery. It is called Hot Pepper Wax Spray by Bonide. I reapply after very heavy rain but it stays on well through irrigation watering. Good Luck!

We went to a small feed store in Frisco and got fox or wolf urine (its sand that has the odor of the urine). Since fox/wolf are their natural enemy they know to stay away.
We sprinkled it around our property line and it has seemed to work.

Try cayenne pepper. Make a "tea" out of it and pour it all over the plants the rabbits are eating. Mix together water and the pepper very heavily - maybe one jar of spice per gallon of water. The rabbits don't like the hot taste. Its an organic way without usung chemicals.

We have had issues with animals in our flowers a few years ago, and we were told to use old coat hangers, stretch them out and cut them to the length of the flowers, or a little shorter and stick them in around your plants, once they get poked a few times they are gone. It worked for us. Good luck

When I was a kid my grandmother had this huge garden and she would tie a tin plate on a metal stick and when the wind blew, it would clatter scaring away the little animals.

Another option, if you can't beat them join them.
You could always set out rabbit food and they would eat that instead of your plants. SO many houses up nowadays our nature life is getting pretty hungry.

PS: Rabbit is very delicious. ;)

We had some very pesky squirrels who took up residence in our attic last year and Calloways suggested spraying fox urine around the place they were getting in and nesting and it worked very well! I'd think that rabbits would be afraid of fox urine too, but don't know for sure. It's natural, of course, but beware - it smells terrible!

I'm not much of a gardener myself, but I think I remember that marigolds keep animals away from gardens.

We had rabbit problems around our house and especially our back yard because for a very long time when my husband was single, he traveled a lot and they would take up residence in the back when he wasn't around. Once we started to use the yard and I was planting vegetable gardens, they obviously needed to go. We found that mixing blood meal and bone meal together and sprinkling them heavily around the fence and the areas that they were known to congregate worked quite well. It smells on your hands if you don't use gloves, but washes off and doesn't make your yard smell. It's also good for your lawn and plants if you don't put it too heavily. We applied it several times over about a six month period and haven't had a problem since. When we went to apply it the first go round, as we worked our way around the yard, two bunnies came out of hiding and were running from us. One darted under the fence into a large area that we had already covered with the mixture because we knew that's how they were getting in, and I saw him completely freeze in the middle of it. I felt bad because he was obviously terrified, but I really needed to get rid of them. We would later see the momma rabit hanging out in the front yard which we didn't worry about sprinkling. And eventually she stopped coming at all.

One last thing, it is good for your plants, but do not sprinkle it over the leaves. Just put it on the ground around them. They'll get the nutrients from there.

This is going to sound really weird, but I've heard if you put human hair in the areas they are getting in, they won't go there anymore. You might try that.

I have the same problem. I just purchased a bottle of Red Fox Urine from Roach Feed in Garland. So far so good. It's under $10. There is also a product called Rabbit Scram that is in granular form that is around $28. Good Luck!

I have heard that you can buy "red fox urine" and it keeps them away. My best advice, however, is to just replace your plants with ones that they don't like. I think that liriope is their favorite! They will eat it off into little nubs!

I use blood meal in our garden to keep critters away. We have bought it at Lowe's, Wal-Mart, and garden centers, the smell is nasty but it works. Good luck!
