Dog skin is not the same as human skin. Human shampoo and soap can dry out even a healthy dog's skin. Use dog shampoo on him.
We can see the sun!!!
I want to give my dog a bath. My husband says that we need to use special shampoo, one that is made for a dog's skin/hair. I say that's a bunch of garbage made up to get people to spend money on dog shampoo.
Our dog doesn't have any special needs, allergies, or skin issues. She's just an old mutt with smelly fur.
I'm totally willing to be wrong - but it would be good to know one way or another. Google seems to be split on the answer.
So...what say you?
TIA
Looks like my husband will be pleased. It's not often that he gets to hear "you were right," but I'm certainly outnumbered! ;-)

Johnson's Baby Shampoo.
Kills fleas
Doesn't sting doggie eyes
Doggies come out soft, shiny, and smelling lovely.
I have used dog shampoos - I found them harsher on the dog's skin than baby shampoo.
In a pinch I use our shampoo, but on a regular basis, I perfurr (lol) to use dog shampoo.

This website suggests using Dawn instead of flea shampoo.....
Heck... they use Dawn on birds and animals that have been in oil spills.....
No, I use dog shampoo as their skin and fur is different from ours.

Dog shampoo is customized for dog skin care.
The shampoo products intended for dogs and those meant for human use are not the same for a number of reasons. Shampoo products have special chemical compositions that are designed to treat a specific type of hair or skin. Because dogs and humans have different skin and hair types, the products intended to clean them are not interchangeable.

Ingredients
Dogs experience different problems than humans do when it comes to needing a shower or bath. The ingredients in dog shampoos are specifically formulated to be dog safe and beneficial to their skin and coats. Dog shampoos often contain pyrethrin and pyrethroids, which are insecticides for treating fleas and ticks. These shampoos also commonly contain salicylic acid, menthol, colloidal oatmeal, aloe vera and hydrocortisone, all of which provide antipruritic properties to relieve itching and allergies. Humectants such as lactic acid and glycerin help to rehydrate sensitive skin, and emollients such as almond oil and coconut oil add beneficial oils to the skin and coat. Using human shampoo is not beneficial for the dog because it does not contain the right ingredients, and some commercially available human shampoos may even contain chemicals that are harmful to the dog."
here is the link. So no. I would not use my shampoo on my dog.

I use dog shampoo (or puppy tear free). I guess you could use baby shampoo as long as it is not all the time. I would only use Dawn dish soap if the animal was covered in some kind of oil, other then that I would not use it to wash an animal.
In my family, we've only used human shampoo in a REAL pinch a couple of times. It can be too harsh on an animals skin. I'd run out to the store if I were you. ;-)
I use Dawn Dish Soap as recommended by our Vet. (I use the clear colored dawn)
No, I use dog shampoo. But I don't buy it at the grocery store or walmart, either. I get a high quality shampoo. There is one spot on my dog's rear that occasionally gets a little dry, and my vet recommended using a dab of human conditioner on just that one spot, though.
Also, be aware that while dogs don't need to be bathed as often as many people like to have it done (to avoid smelliness) they DO need to be bathed. Just be sure you rinse really well. Bathing a dog every week, or even every other week can be way too much for some dogs.
We have farm dogs, so they are plenty stinky and definitely not pampered in the beauty department, but we still use the stupid dog shampoo. I have also given kittens baths (When they went from being barn cats to house cats) and have had to use a cat shampoo. And even when the cows gets a bath (Before we take them to the county fair (And at the county fair) they get baths so that they look nice) we have to use the expensive stuff (Although the cows get bathed in dreft laundry detergent (It was vet recommended) not cow shampoo :P )
Baby Shampoo is fine once in a while. I bathe my dogs once a month/month and a half. I use a puppy tear free shampoo even if they are adults, as they have sensitive skin.
My friend always used diluted Dawn dish washing soap and then rinsed it out thoroughly.
Hi ephie-
I have always used baby shampoo on dogs...mostly because...when kiddos and dogs were younger...that was the 'least hurtful' shampoo available.
For both.
Good for my KIDDOS...
Then good for my dog.
***we do NOT bathe our dogs often***
NOR do we 'show' them...
Hope that helps!

Soap free dog shampoo. Baby shampoo is ok. Most human ones are going to strip more oils from.their coats, ok to use if needed usually. Dish Soap would really strip, which is why it is used for oil spill clean up and to wash if pet has come in contact with something includng a reaction to a flea medication. That is the standard treatment one xompany will tell you if pet has a reaction and about all that is on the sheet they will fax. Not my personal pet, but I worked in a vet office and we did see reactiona to otc topicals. So I would say human ones will work, but a dog one is probably better. I like hylyt, smells good too :)
You need a formula that will be gentle on their eyes, I often use baby shampoo.
I needed to wash my dog but didn't have dog shampoo so I used mine. She lived, her hair didn't fall out, didn't cry either. Granted I didn't do this very often but it didn't seem to harm her.
No, I only use dog shampoo.
I imagine they are not as harsh.
Again, I wouldn't use human shampoo.
We use Selsun Blue or Head & Shoulders as our dog has allergies and sensitive, dandruff type skin. They both were recommended by the vet for ANY dog because their skin can dry out easily.
Good luck!
i have used regular shampoo on my dogs before with no issues. i actually only wash my yorkie with baby shampoo. its not going to hurt them. its basically the same thing only we dont have a flee and tick repellant in our shampoos.
I use baby shampoo.
