What are your guys thoughts on this one? My daughter is 3 1/2 and I'm not sure what to do about this shot. I am very vigilant about getting her vaccines and yearly flu shot, but this one is still a question for me. I've heard both positives and negatives to getting it. It just seems that the news changes on it everyday and it still seems so new and unsure to me. Anyone have some strong info either way for me to help make my decision?

What can I do next?

Do your research and don't depend on people's opinions. There just isn't enough information for anyone to give you a valid answer. I'm not doing it and would not inject my children with something that's toxic, hasn't been tested and is the result of a media blitz designed to cause panic. But, I don't vaccinate either, so it's a personal decision and one you should make on your own.

I work closely with the Maricopa County Department of Public Health, so I have gotten a lot of information from them - including directly from Dr. England, the Director. They are highly recommending the H1N1 shots and expectations are such that there will be many deaths because of the H1N1/Swine Flu. Do your research, they are predicting that one in three people will get the H1N1 flu - would you rather get it, or take every measure to prevent you or your child from getting it? I know all three of my family members will get the vaccine, so hopefully we one be included in the one in three statistic.

I am an office manager in a Pediatric office. I have received tons of information regarding the H1N1 vaccine. I also viewed an interactive Webinar yesterday and received a lot of helpful information. There have currently been several deaths in the state of AZ due to the H1N1, 27% of which have been in children 5-24 years of age. 59% of the current confirmed cases are in that same age group with 12% being in children 4 and under. There are currently no seasonal flu cases diagnosed at this time, all tested have been H1N1. We see children everyday that test positive for flu A which is almost always right now the H1N1. We have had to hospitalize several children because they are just so sick with this. The top 5 groups that are being encouraged to get the vaccine are: 1.Pregnant women 2.Healthcare workers 3.children 6 months to 5 yrs 4.children with chronic conditions such as asthma. 5.Care givers of children under 6 months of age. After a lot of research, my doctors are still highly recommending the vaccine due to the severity of the symptoms and the widespread disease we are currently experiencing. I am personally going to get the vaccine when it is available. We may have some shipments as soon as the middle of October but we aren't expecting is until at least the end of October. As with any flu outbreak, personal hygiene is a huge issue. Make sure you wash your hands, don't cough into your hands...use a tissue you can throw away. Keep you small children away from large crowds or anyone with a fever or coughing. It is important if you want to receive the Tamiflu treatment that you are seen within 48 hours of symptoms first appearing. Don't believe all the "hype". Do research yourself and decide what is best for you and your children. A very imformative website is: stopthespreadaz.org. It can direct you to other websites as well.

Hi T.,

There's an article regarding the H1N1 virus that Canada has published that is pretty interesting. I think you should check it out and then make your decisions from there. My family has never gotten the flu shots or vaccinations and very rarely get sick. Here is the link to the article from Canada: http://www.naturalnews.com/027102_vaccines_H1N1_flu_shot....
Also, there is another link that I'm sending you regarding information on vaccinations: http://www.healthmasters.com/blog/poisoning-our-children

I believe that there are some healthier alternatives out there. Research it out for yourself and check the statistics regarding some of these diseases in children, i.e. autism for instance where I believe that now 1 in 25 children are autistic. Back in the early 80's you never really heard about it. You make the decisions for yourself and your family so don't base your decisions on fear, rather base it on sound judgement and "your" researched facts vs. heresay.

There are a lot of natural things to do with NO side effects! I hope that helps, if anything, it'll give you some food for thought.

You've evaluated the risks of getting an annual flu shot, and decided it's a good idea. (Good choice.) This shot is supposed to be essentially the same, and protects against the strain that's supposed to run rampant among kids -- not a worse flu, a more widespread one. You might want to wait a couple weeks and then call your pediatrician -- they don't have the shot yet, and ours said that they haven't gotten official guidance on its use yet either. Once they've sorted out testing on children and have official recommendations, then you'll have something to go on.

I have weighed the risks and have decided not to get the flu shots or give them to my kids.

The risk of getting the flu is pretty high, but I think the risk of significant damage is higher with the shot.
(Of course, it would be different if one of us had an increased risk with the regular flu.)

There are positives and negatives about the Flu shot however, overall the consensus is mostly negative. I have many research and public information on my facebook page with information on adverse reactions, the effectiveness, etc that may be of great benefit for you to read. If you have a facebook page search under Dr. A. Waggoner, D.C. and if you don't let me know, I can send you some information spefically. Go to Boxes on the top tab and click see all at the top of the next page. There is a lot of information on many different subjects but you will find a lot of information on the Flu shot as well. I wish you the best.
