Question Regarding Toddler Boy Having a Yeast Infection

My son was recently diagnosed with having a yeast infection around his genital area. The dr prescribed Nystatin (sp?). I used it for maybe a day and my son complained that it burned. I'm not sure if this is suppose to be a reaction to the meds. My husband said it burns because it's working. I've never heard of something like that before. Needless to say, I've stopped using it and now I'm using Eucerin Aquaphor Healing Ointment. He's genital area is not as red as it was but this product doesn't help with the itching.

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

So What Happened?

Thanks to EVERYONE for giving me such great advice! Although, none of the suggestions worked...only because my son did not have a yeast infection. He was misdiagnosed by his pediatric doctor. I ended up taking him to a dermatologist and he was diagnosed with Neuro Dermatitis. He prescribed a cream and his itchiness was gone by the 2nd or 3rd day. Skin issues really need to be seen by dermatologists. It's their speciality!

We just fought a yeast infection here, too. My ped said it's very common in warm weather and told me to use Lotrimin. It's an over the counter cream. My son's two and the infection was gone in three days. Good luck!

My daughter often gets a yeast rash after having been on antibiotics. We just use the over the counter Lotrimin AF (jock itch cream basically). Just apply twice a day and then put some diaper ointment over top of it so that it doesn't just get soaked up by the diaper. It usually is gone within 2-4 days.

Organic Yogurt (Yo-Baby) is great for the digestive system and it helps stop and prevent yeast infections if you can get him to eat it regularly he shouldn't get anymore. Also you can rub Plain Organic Yogurt on the area and that really helps with the itching and burning. Also Arbonne products will help him too. If you are interested in more info please contact me in a private email. My grandson had yeast infections and everything I mentioned helped him and he hasn't had it anymore. Good Luck hope this helped you.

The yeast infection and the scratching he is doing irritates the skin, which is probably why the cream is burning. The Aquaphor isn't going to do anything for the yeast, but if it helped with the irritation then try the medicine again, it might not burn. Treat the infection now, because the yeast will make him miserable and he will feel much better after hte medicine is on for a couple of days.

You do need something medicated to get rid of the yeast infection. Your husband is probably right, but don't tell him that! LOL Just call your nurse at the doctors office, tell her the problem and they will call in a different prescription for you. Good luck!

If it's a yeast infection, you can use Monistat cream on it. That shouldn't burn. Has he recently been on antibiotics? That's usually what will cause the yeast infection. And, no, it shouldn't "burn because it's working." Also, give him some yogurt...the cultures help more naturally.

Might sound weird but put some yogurt all over the area! WORKS! Or you could try some monistat.

My toddler son just had a terrible yeast infection, but has had mild ones when he was younger. So, we had nystatin on hand. It took a while with this infection for us to see any improvement, but we applied it 3 to 4 times a day and used a & d when we weren't putting the nystatin on. Also, my son had it on his thighs where his diaper sits. The doc told me that I could put 1% hydrocortisone cream on that twice a day to help with the itching. But very important not to put that on the genital area. My son did not complain of burning, but hurting and itching. After about three days of this regiment, we saw definite improvement, but it did take the full two weeks of nystatin to entirely clear it up. I believe there is another prescription they can give you to replace the nystatin.
Hope this helps.

My son had on on his bum once. I don't think Eucurin will help the infection... if it is burning...call and ask your Dr. if that is normal and/or if he can prescribe you something else. It may appear to be going away...but it probably won't completely heal with Eucerin.

It could be the alcohol in the cream causing the burning.

Call the Doc and ask for the Nystantin POWDER instead of the cream.

Buy Acidophilus at Whole Foods for Children. It will come as a powder and needs to be refrigerated. You can put it in their food or mix with water and make a paste and put it on them. It's supposed to replace the good bacteria in the body that kills the yeast. Any chance your son has been on antibiotics? My pediatrician told me about the acidophilus when my little guy had a yeast infection as an infant. She said that all of the antibiotics he had as a small infant had killed all of the bacteria in his body that fought those types of things and that's why he couldn't get rid of it. That, and try changing diaper brands if he is still in diapers. I hope this helps!

Both of my children got this and the nystatin helped within 3 days. They were younger and couldn't tell me if it burned. Sorry that I can't offer an alternative, but it worked really well for us after trying the alternatives before taking him to a doctor.

I would definitely call the doctor, he could be allegric to something in the cream that is causing the burning. Another thing to do is to after he wakes up and after bathes let the area air out to breath. We call this butt time.

When giving him yogurt be sure that it's Dannon Yogurt, this is the only one that has natural cultures in it. Most of the other brands have them added.
