Question for Cloth Diapering Mamas

I switched over to cloth diapers about six months ago. I have 20 used fuzzi bunz. They were in great condition except for the elastic in the legs needing to be replaced which I did myself. Everything was great until about a month ago when they started to leak. The insert is absorbing fine, whether it is a big or small pee pee but the diaper cover is leaking really bad. Do I need to strip them? Are the at the end of their life? I have a front loader machine which I have read is a challenge to wash cloth diapers with. I follow all the recommended washing tips from the fuzzi bunz website. I use ecover detergent which is listed on their website as being ok. Not sure what to do. I'm back to using disposables in the meantime which is bumming me out.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I am surprised to hear this. Fuzzi Bunz has a great reputation. Approximately how old were they when you got them? Do all of them leak? I was given some Bum Genius that were about 3-4 years old. The velcro didn't hold well and the elastic was definitely loose. Keep in mind as your child grows that they will stretch the diapers out, which was the case with the diapers I got. They chronically leaked, and I eventually gave up. However, I wondered if they would have worked if I had held onto them for when my son was a little older (and bigger). Or, another thought, maybe your child needs a doubler if she or he is a heavy wetter. I ended up getting Grovia diapers and I LOVE them. They fit my son perfectly, and I love that they are a hybrid diaper.
Perhaps you can call the manufacturer or get on a cloth diapering blog to get suggestions.

Do you dry them in a hot dryer? How does the inside liner look?

i have a front load and I've did cloth for 4 years. Rinse, hot wash, extra rinse. Use very little soap.

The diapers might be done with, depending on how old they are. I've always used Bum Genius, and mine worked for two kids, getting washed every other day. Some are starting to leak, so I'm thinking they are at their end.

I had fuzzi bunz that started to leak, and they had a lot of life left in them! I discovered that my house has really hard water and that was to blame. I started using a water softener in my washing machine, and the leaking problems have stopped. I use Charlie's soap to clean my diapers. They have a water softening additive. It works great- I use it on all of my laundry now.

You could try stripping them. I never actually did it with my diapers (you really need a non HE machine), I just washed them like 5 times in a row with super hot water and no soap, to get all of the soap out (only did this once in 2 and a half years). Anyway, whenever we had leaking issues, it was always because there wasn't enough insert in there. I would definitely try more, either a larger one, or two together. That always fixed our leaking issues, which happened several times as my son grew older. If not, I guess the waterproof part could be done, especially if they have been washed thousands of times and dried a lot. Oh, maybe try changing your detergent too, what do you use now?

The best tip I got for washing cloth diapers in HE machines is to set them first to a rinse and spin. Wait until the diapers are soaked, then turn the machine off. It'll drain any unabsorbed water, but the diapers will be heavier, thus "tricking" the machine to use more water in the wash.

Also, try getting "Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds" to wash them in. I get mine from Amazon. It will take an extra rinse or two to get all the soap out.

These two things together got the ammonia out of my daughter's diapers. It's worth a shot on your covers.
