okay moms i need some insight. i have these two things on my face that look like tiny whiteheads, however they've been there for MONTHS. they are not red or swollen, just a tiny white dot under the surface of the skin. i was told that if i pierce the skin with a sanitized needle, that dried, kind of hard puss will come out and the skin will heal. what the heck? was i told way off base or does something like this really exist?

Yes they do exist! I have them too - they are called millia and the white part is really a calcified deposit. I haven't had much luck getting them out myself, I have my dermatologist do it, but she's just using a sanitized thingy to break the skin and then prying that out of there. After, put a little neosporin on it - it'll bleed - and try to let it be for a bit to heal. There doesn't seem to be anything to do to prevent them. :(

Hi Carrie,
As a Cosmetologist we learned skin care in school, these sound like true white heads. We were taught that true white heads you can not pop and look like a little white pearl under the skin. I have heard of the needle trick, but really if you are going to do it boil the needle for at least ten minutes then dip it in alcohol to make sure it is sterilized not just sanitized and really you should probably check with your Doctor just to make sure that they are white heads, and ask what you should do about them. the needle thing scares me a little bit the last thing you want to do is to get an infection on your face or worse. Good luck.

Jennifer A. is correct! They are calcium deposits just under the skin but with no open pore to allow them to come out. That is why you need a sterilized needle to pierce the skin for an opening. What will come out is almost like a tiny grain of sand. If you do nothing, they will continue to grow in size.

You were told correct. My daughter has these on her nose. I asked her ped dr. about these and she had them too. Yes just pop them as you were told. did my daughters and they are still gone.

I had some of those and went to the dermatologist for them. He told me they were calcium deposits. What I had to do was pop them open with sterile needle (I got some syringes at the drug store) opened them up to get the hard core out. Cleaned it and left them alone to heal. They disappeared after that. They look like white heads with hard centers. They do leave a crater when the center is removed, but they heal up just fine. I got mine up close to my eyes. My oldest dtr had them too when she was young.

Good Morning Carrie, First Happy Mother's Day!!!!
It is a white head and it is hard oil build up under the skin in the pore, not puss. Yes you can open it but it will be red and puffy for a while. I had a couple on the edge of my cheek bone, I did open them and there is a circle like scar there now. So my personal advice, leave them alone. ;)

But that is just me, I wish I had taken my own advice....lol

PS I sure missed all of you out there In Mama land.
We are back among the community again. We have been without power since 4:00 am Friday morning with a powerful storm with 80-100 mph winds hail and rain. Our little town looked like a war zone. All is well now. I could almost swear it was a tornado that didn't touch down as there was roaring and you couldn't tell which way rain, hail and wind were coming from. Things torn up so badly, trampolines twisted like tinker toys. Was the first time ever I have actually been fearful of a storm. Cause this silly Nana loves to watch thunder storms and lightening. God is so good to us and not one person was injured. All of my family and friends are troupers doing well.
God Bless and Be with you all on this Wonderful Mother's Day

My guess is that it is a clogged pore...and I would try softening it up with warm compresses and then see if you can't get it to open up. I never have pierced one with a sanitized needle and would probably want to check with a doctor before doing that. Especially with it being on your face...you dont want to do anything that is going to cause scarring.

I'd go to a professional. A dermatologist would be best. You are not REALLY sure what your getting into and let's face it (no pun intended) but it IS your face we're talking about! LOL!

Carrie...leave them alone! Unless you go see a dermatoligist and they say sure go ahead and poke your spots with a needle ( which is highly unlikely) I have a condition called Fordyce's condition, and it is small white spots that are not raised, I have had them for as long as I can remember...but I have noticed as I got older, that I have seen more of them. They don't bother me I don't bother them, the one and only time I tried to open one all I got was a bloody mess. See a dermatologist to set your mind at ease, if it is Fordyce's condition, the bad news is there is absolutely no treatment, it is genetic...as a cosmetic issue, most of my spots are not really visible unless I am inspecting my face about a nose length away from the mirror, and the little bit of make up I wear covers them up. Good luck! B.

That is true. There is such a thing. You may want to check with a dr. first. However, these are often referred to as calcium deposits. As far as I know, they do not go away or dissolve on their own so you will need to take care of them. Good luck.

Hi my name is T. Billington and I am a rep for BeautiControl. I have a mobile spa business. I have the same spa treatments and anti-aging products that you can get at your local spas for 1/3 of the cost. I know that you do not know me and you get bombarded with all of the other direct sales companies but I want to show you that I am different! I could help you a few ways one is I GUARANTEE ALL of my products if it does not work the way I tell you it should you get your money back from me no questions just good business, S. I will send you free samples so you can try it before you would ever buy anything, third I promise that you will get the best service possible I own this business and this is how I support my family.

As a skin care consultant I would suggest a mud masque of some kind to help draw out any impurities from under the skin. I have three differnt kinds that would work one is a Fango Seaweed Scrub/Masque, Detoxifying Body Facial. and my personal fav is the Detoxifying Clay Masque. You could purchase one of them or I can come give you the spa treatment at your home or mine to try it out.

I would love to help!

I would also suggest considering the dermatalogist. I had some things that sound similar and they were a virus called Molluscum Contagiosum (sp?). Eventually they run their course and do go away but my derm said it could be anywhere from a few months to 5 years!! He also said to pop them and clean the area to help speed up the process. I had mine for years. They do spread, so if you start noticing them elsewhere, I would call the doctor.

I would check with a dermatologist before doing anything to the spot. I, too, have a white discoloration on my nose but my dermatologist said to just leave it alone and keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't get bigger, start itching, bleeding, etc. It's been there for a few years now and hasn't bothered me, except that I wish it weren't there. It came out of no where and I just keep hoping it will go away just as suddenly!

My sister had something similar on her stomach and she went to the doctor and they were cysts. They removed them and after analyzing at the office, they sent is for further testing as they had signs of skin cancer. You might want to get an opinion, especially if you can feel it under the skin. Good luck!
