Can my 1-year-old eat tuna? If so, how often? His iron is on the low side, so I'm trying to figure out ways for it to come up (he refuses to eat meat). I had a tuna sandwich the other day, and he liked it so...yeah! I just want to make sure it's ok with the mercury and everything. Thanks!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone- We try to eat mostly organics and non-processed foods, so we did try black beans--HE LOVED THEM! We had tried other lentils in the past, and he wasn't a fan, but...we'll probably do a tuna sandwich once a week...then at our next checkup I'll ask his doctor what she thinks. Thanks again!!!

I believe the once a week thing is what I've heard for tuna as well. Just wanted to give you a list of non-meat sources here from a pregnancy book I'm reading: dried beans, peas, dried apricots, potatoes, prunes, lentils and oatmeal....and of course, spinach! I'll tell you what my mom used to do for us. It's regarding liver in a disguised form. (Liver is controversial as well due to the fact that it's purpose is to eliminate toxins, but I have not read enough about it to decide if it's bad at all.) My mother used to put liver along with banana baby food into a blender. It would come out as an almost "Army green" color, but she topped it with Cheerios and we loved it! In fact, I remember we used to call it "Favorite Food!" So, for what it's worth... :)

My daughter is 6 and doesn't even know what tuna is. We've never had it in the house. Because I hate it and I'm stubborn.

Anyways will he do beans, chicken nuggets? Any meat from McDonalds?

My daughter will eat any meat out there especially if she can dip it in ketchup. Will he dip it in applesauce, salad dressing, honey, ketchup?

If he won't eat meat treat him like a vegetarian and look for other forms of iron.

Since children get most of their mercury from canned tuna, it is important for parents to limit their children's consumption to less than one ounce of canned light tuna for every 12 pounds of body weight per week, in order to stay below the level of mercury the EPA considers safe. That means that a child who weighs 36 pounds should not eat more than 3 ounces (half a standard-sized can of chunk light tuna) per week. Children should avoid albacore or white tuna because the levels of mercury are higher.

I had heard once/week on the Tuna as well. I would ask your doctor to be sure. I had also heard the Albacore had higher levels too. Have you tried Salmon? They may have it canned but I just looked and Salmon is on the lower side of having any mercury. Also try spinach! You can mix cooked spinach in with a lot of other foods and they won't even notice.

Hi A. - I think this is a question you should ask your son's pediatrician. Good luck!

A.,
I actually don't know the answer to the tuna question, but wanted to suggest lentils as a really good iron source. I cook them up with some onion and carrots and a little salt and my 14 month old loves them. Plus they are a good size to pick up for finger food if they aren't too mushy.
I was reading the other posts too....meat from McDonalds has no nutritional value compared with the chemicals etc that are in it. I wouldn't use it to help with iron intake. Chicken McNuggets are 65% corn anyway with all the processing and they are coated in butane to keep them "fresh". I'm glad you got a real answer to your tuna question though.
