Question About Strange Pain with My Little Ones

I am looking to see if there is anyone who has had this illness. I am not even sure that it is an illness. My three kids, at different times, have come to me with tongue pain. For two days, they complain of their tongues hurting. Then all of a sudden, out of nowhere, they have a bunch of white bumps on their tongues. It hurts them so much that they don't eat, talk, or play. I have never seen this before. They aren't cancor (sp) sores. If you have ever heard of "White lie pimples" that is exactly what they look like. After a day or two of the white bumps, they turn red and swollen. Still painful. I can't figure out what it is. I haven't called the doctor yet, because it is so expensive. Please, if anyone can help me, let me know.
Thank you so much.

It sounds like hand, foot and mouth disease. There isn't an anitbiotic for it, but it is extremely painful. It's also hightly contagious. I would go to the doc, if you can and see if that's what it is. The only thing you can really do is to keep their mouths as clean as possible and give them motrin for the pain. Most, but not all, kids will also get a rash on their hand and feet. My niece had it and with treatment, it cleared up in a few days.

Sounds like hand, foot and mouth disease. If it is, there is usually bumps/blisters on the palms of their hands and the bottoms of their feet along with the painful white blister type sores in the mouth and tounge. It should only last a few days then be gone. Don't hesitate taking them to the doctor if they are not getting any better soon. It is not worth taking chances on.

Hi T.,

My son's get bumps too, but normally there is just one or two bumps not a lot of them. When he gets them We were told that they are infective taste buds. We can't explain why they get them. I was told to let them suck on a hard peice of candy like a lemon head or such or drink through a straw (kinda hard like as if they were trying to drink a thick shake through the straw)It brings them to heads and they normally disappear the following day. It does make them sore by doing this but it has always worked for us.

But your case really does sound like what the other ladies are saying the hand foot mouth. My son had that. His whole mouth was white and there was an odor to it. There is a medication that they give for this. If you suspect this please take at least one of them in. Worst case they can give you enough meds for the rest of them or at least let you know what it is.

I don't know your financial or insurance situation. But if the doctors visit can't be done, then you might want to consider taking them to you local care station or hospital. Depending on where you go if you have insurance or not they can help. If you have no insurance your kids might be entitled to the state kid health insurance program.

Hope this helps, best of luck to a speedy recovery.

My 5 yr old daughter had this just 3 weeks ago. Started out with her saying her tongue hurt. Then a fever, then a rash in her mouth and on tongue, then the rash was blisters. Then rash on the body. I took her to the doctor and she was diagnosed with Gingivostomatitis. HIGHLY contagious, no school for her for 5 days. It's viral so they only thing we could do for her was pain medication and fever reducer(fever didn't last long) and a prescription mouth rinse. No one else in my house got this but it could have been my husband or I had already had it in a different form or we had it years ago and didn't remember. My 7 yr old didn't get it either.

My hubby gets this when he eats walnuts. he says it is an allergic reaction to the walnuts. Perhaps it is something they have ate that caused this. Do an allergy food test to see if this helps resolve it.
Simply think back to what they ate that particular day (if possible ) then test them on it. If this occurs you now have found your culprit. If this doesn't work then as others mentioned it could be a yeast or thrush ocurrance happening. If that is the case you would need ot seek treatment for them.

Not really sure. Maybe an allergy, sensitivity to acidic foods, a virus?

Try going to Matthew 25 clinic. You might have to sit in the waiting room a while, but the doctor's visits are free. They can generally give you meds that are samples and free. Matthew 25 is downtown.

Hi, My kids have had issues with Thrush in the past. Every time they get it the dr says they shouldn't get it at their ages but they've had it. Or poss it could be strep. I've had one son that had a raised white rash on his tonge but had a red rash on the roof of his mouth. He was complaining of tonge pain so I didn't think of strep, but it turned out to be that.Good Luck!!

You might check into "Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease". It is not too serious and can be treated. When my young daughter had it, she didn't want to eat or drink anything.

I got these a while back when I was eating a lot of licorice. (I mean like two pounds every couple of days!!) I went to the doctor and he looked at me and said stop eating licorice. ;) I'm not sure what causes them but I know mine wasn't from burns. They will go away on their own but they hurt like heck in the meantime. Popping them does NOT help. They have to pop on their own, otherwise you just deal with it for twice as long. I don't think I would take them to the doctor as long as they don't keep coming back. If they do come back, pay attention to what they're eating. It could be something they eat that is causing it.

There is a type of virus that kids can get. It is called hoof and mouth disease. It is a virus and has to run its course. Antibiotics will not help it. It usually runs about 5 days start to finish and yes their mouths gets whit pimples like that are very sore. My daughter had it when she was about 1 year old. I took her to the doctor and thought the doctor was pulling my leg when he said "hoof and mouth disease". If it last more than 5 days, than you should have them looked at.

Check their hands and feet and see if it is also there. It could be hands, mouth, foot, virus (coxsacki virus sp?). It is very contagious which would explain why all your children have it. Also painful. You should call the doctor. I don't remember if they give anything for it or not. Also since it is contagious you should keep them home until you find out if it is the hands, mouth, foot virus or not.

T., it could be many different things, from an allergic reaction to certain foods or a fungal/viral infection. Can you afford to take one child when their tongue breaks out just to get a diagnosis and then go from there? If it's an allergy thing, then you can try eliminating it from the other children's diets as well and see if it helps.

I get those all the time and they HURT! I went to the pharmacist at walgreens and she said I was burning my taste buds and they were swelling up. Then I would rub my tongue against my teeth, and that would just make it worse. The things that work best for me is gargling with hot salt water and putting "Kanka" on it. I don;t know how your little ones will do with this because it stings at first and the saliva washes it away pretty quickly so you have to keep reapplying. Try and kep them away from really hot foods. I have banned starbucks hot passion tea from myself because i always burn my tongue on those! Good luck.

I am wondering if it isn't Hand, Foot, and Mouth disease?? My daughter had the same thing...white bumps on her tongue but she also had them on ther toes and hands, behind her knees. Her tongue really bothered her but nothing else. This was a while ago, but I think that it just went away on its own. I don't remember them turning red and swollen though. Hmmmm....

I've heard of the taste buds on a person's tongue getting irritated but that's usually just red and swollen, unless maybe the taste buds are infected. That would account for it going away on it's own. Have you noticed maybe if a certain food was eaten before the bumps turn up? Another guess could be (from the experience with my own kids) if they had candy, suckers, something like that. The suction could cause the irritation and probably bumps too. I know doctor's are expensive, but there are soooomany illnesses out there now that it might be beneficial to take them in next time it happens. I've got a great book on child illnesses, and I'll hunt around to see what info I can find that might help you.
