Question About Speech Therapy

Hello, I found your site when I googled Speech Therapy for preschoolers. I have a 4 year old son with a speech problem. I took him to the screening through the school district and he was labeled "extreme". The school has 1 of 3 things to offer if your child qualifies, BUT, THEY choose what option your child will get. Option 1 is 1 hour once a week to do speech therapy with anywhere from 5 to 8 other kids. Option 2 is 1 hour twice a week to do the same thing. Option 3 is that they have a half day preschool that is 5 days a week special for speech therapy. I truely believe that my son needs the preschool. My husband can only understand him 50% of the time, other relatives only 25%. He gets soooo frustrated when we can't understand him and it breaks my heart. He started doing this thing where if I can't understand him he puts his head down and says real sad, "nevermind" and walks away. They have instead assigned him to 1 hour twice a week. Except that because of parent teachers, screenings, holidays, etc. It is very seldom that they actually meet twice a week. It is usually only Wednesdays that they meet. I have seen no improvement what-so-ever. But with 8 boys and one hour, how can there be any one-on-one time at all? I'm sorry to ramble but I am so frustrated that even though they marked him "extreme", and his current preschool teacher went there with me to ask that they put him in the class, they won't. They say that in order to qualify for the preschool he has to also have either motorskill issues or other mentally challenging problems like computing information. I feel like my son is being left out of something he really needs just because he ONLY has a speech problem. Is there anything I can do to force them to let him in for next year??? Again, I apologize, and any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi K.,

My name is Y. and I live in Sandwich,Illinois. Two of my sons have had speech therapy. I am very lucky that Sandwich schools are very good at their screening and both of my sons qualified for Early Childhood Preschool. I so completely understand where you are coming from. I am not sure what steps that you have been through for screening. Who is doing the screening? Yorkville school district or Kendall County Special Education? Have you had an IEP meeting? The county is usually who runs the Special Education preschool. My children's godmother lives in Yorkville and works at Kiddie Campus. I will ask her who you should contact to get this taken care of. No matter what you happens DO NOT GIVE UP!! Your child is worth it and his self esteem will improve tremendously once he gets the proper attention. In the mean time if you are interested in getting help outside of the school system, I highly recommend Rainbow Center in Aurora. My 3 1/2 yr old went there for over a year and we saw huge improvements. At the time he was under age 3 so he was covered under Early Intervention by the state which only goes up to age 3 so you will need to coordinate woth your insurance but it is worth it. If you do ask for Erin. She did wonders for Joshua. Let me know what else I can do for you. I am here even if you just need a sounding board. I also am a stay at home mom. I have 3 boys Alex(10),Jacob(7) and Joshua (3 1/2). Are you new to the area? Hope this helps.

I have a daughter who will be 5 in June and has autism, and we just moved from the yorkville school district. The MOST IMPORTANT thing I have learned in dealing with your child's needs is this: YOU are the parent & YOU know him better than anyone else in the world. YOU know what he needs moreso than any teacher, doctor, therapist, coordinator, or any other professional. It is YOUR JOB as a his mommy to fight tooth and nail to get him EVERYTHING he needs and deserves. Most school districts/government controlled agencies, especially ones that you do not pay for, will do anything to save money, thier focus is on doing as little as "necessary" for your child. They are counting on you to accept their decisions and not push for more/different services. I have gone through this many times (especially at our new school) and have almost always gotten "my way". It has never been easy, they will try to tell you that he doesn't need what you are demanding, that there is no room in the program/class, that he doesn't qualify, or whatever they can to get you to quit asking. If you keep trying and they still refuse, look for a special education advocate (try ARC)to help you. They know the laws better, and the schools are usually more apt to listen to them. If the situation doesn't get any better, you have the choice to go through "due process", which gets a court mediator involved. The 1 thing to keep in mind, is NEVER GIVE UP!!! Your child depends on you to get him what he needs.
I hope I didn't come off as pushy, this is only what I know and my opinion, take it or leave it. I just hope that I helped. If you have any questions or want to talk, feel free to e-mail me anytime.
Good Luck,
A.

My brother has a son with sort of the same issue- I asked him if he went through the same issues and he said he did. He mentioned something about an IEP program? He said that he went over the teachers head and went right to the head of the school to get what he needed. I'm not sure if that helps? If you have any other questions please feel free to e-mail me directly ____@____.com- Hang in there :)

Hi,

Its odd that I should see this right now, because my son is about to be evaluated by the Kendall County Special Education dept in May.

I know I did some looking around for private speech therapy. There is a place called Spot4Kids in Oswego, but I don't have that much information about it. I do know speech therapy privately can be very expensive - upwards of $100/hour, although your insurance may cover it.

My son is 3 and doesn't speak a lot. I'm hoping our experience isn't as horrible as yours was. We live in Montgomery and our kids will be attending Bristol Grade School when they get to be school age. My daughter is 5.

Any advice for someone about to go through this?

Thanks,

P.
