I have a daughter who will be 5 in June and has autism, and we just moved from the yorkville school district. The MOST IMPORTANT thing I have learned in dealing with your child's needs is this: YOU are the parent & YOU know him better than anyone else in the world. YOU know what he needs moreso than any teacher, doctor, therapist, coordinator, or any other professional. It is YOUR JOB as a his mommy to fight tooth and nail to get him EVERYTHING he needs and deserves. Most school districts/government controlled agencies, especially ones that you do not pay for, will do anything to save money, thier focus is on doing as little as "necessary" for your child. They are counting on you to accept their decisions and not push for more/different services. I have gone through this many times (especially at our new school) and have almost always gotten "my way". It has never been easy, they will try to tell you that he doesn't need what you are demanding, that there is no room in the program/class, that he doesn't qualify, or whatever they can to get you to quit asking. If you keep trying and they still refuse, look for a special education advocate (try ARC)to help you. They know the laws better, and the schools are usually more apt to listen to them. If the situation doesn't get any better, you have the choice to go through "due process", which gets a court mediator involved. The 1 thing to keep in mind, is NEVER GIVE UP!!! Your child depends on you to get him what he needs.
I hope I didn't come off as pushy, this is only what I know and my opinion, take it or leave it. I just hope that I helped. If you have any questions or want to talk, feel free to e-mail me anytime.
Good Luck,
A.
