Question About New Top Loader Washers When Unbalanced

I assume all of the lids on 'new' (my old one was 16 years old so use that as a gauge as to what is 'new') top loaders lock because of the higher spin speeds.

The other day I threw my daughter's sleeping bag in with a regular load of clothes. It seemed okay until it was time for it to hit the spin cycle. It clanged like it was off-balance but instead of proceeding off-balance or stopping all together it started filling again with water. It did 'something' and then when it would try to spin again, it would clang, refill etc. I was glad I was home and 'paying attention', otherwise I can't imagine how long it would have kept repeating this process. I paused the cycle, adjusted the sleeping bag and it FINALLY finished. Phew!

So is this normal in the 'new' machines? The process doesn't make much sense to me but I guess my days of throwing a load in and walking to the bus stop or becoming preoccupied are over.

What can I do next?

This happens to me too and all you can do is stop or pause the washer and re-adjust the load. Only once did the error code come up that it was off balance.

PS: I NEVER leave the house with the washer or dryer going. I had an older model once have the belt break and thank goodness I was there to turn it off. I think it would have eventually started a fire and burnt the house down.

During the rinse cycle it spins off as much water as possible and then adds water to rinse it better. Perfectly normal nothing to see here.

You probably only noticed it this time because the laundry was out of balance. I was always amazed how out of balance it had to be before it would stop the spin cycle. One time that sucker walked four feet and it never shut off.

my machine isnt new but its a top loader and when it goes into the spin cycle if its off balance its so loud u can hear it outside and the machines in the basement.. not only that but the washer actually moves .. it always happens wen i wash our comforter never happens when im just doing a load of clothes or towels.. my mom said its the stuffing thats inside the blanket all the water it soaks up makes it incredibly heavy and it throws the barrell off (thats the same thing happeneing with your daughters sleeping bag).. if u dont readjust the load it can damage the thingy (i think its a belt) that spins the washer bcause the barrel is just going crazy in there.. last time i washed the freaking thing i was down there for 20 mintues starting and stopping the load to get it adjusted so it wouldnt freak out

I know ours fills gradually, stops and then continues when it senses it's a bigger load. It can do this several times before it reaches the right level. It may have had nothing to do with being off-balance and just to do with the regular rinse cycle (was it strictly on the spin dry cycle?). Just an idea to throw out there.

First I have to giggle at your...'it did something!' (Sorry!) Anyway, I believe the reason for refilling was, by adding water it could try to move the out of balance item(s) into a better position. The sleeping bag was prob. just to big to be moved. I don't think it was to unusual. :)
