Ok moms I need help!!! My son had a fever of 102.8 for about 4 days. The dr. said it was a virus(no other symptoms) just a fever. The fever finally broke Tuesday night and he has been fever free since then but...he is sooooooooo crabby. I have to hold him all day,he barely eats and is just a mess. All he wants to do is sleep or be held. I know he is getting some teeth, some broke through already but with my 2 girls I didnt even know they were teething so I know nothing about bad teething. Is it his teeth? Is he just sleeping because he is catching up from when he was sick? Can there be something seriously wrong? Please give me some advice!!!! I heard they are crabby when teething but does teething make them want to sleep all the time. Thanks for your help in advance

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who helped and gave me advice. He was so much better today. Like some of you stated, I think it was just his body trying to get back to normal after having a fever for 5 days. He was just a tiny bit crabby but actually went off and played for a while with his sisters. Thanks again

When my son was teething, he would get dizzy and lose his balance. I don't remember him running a fever, but he would want me close. And when he would have those spells, he wanted me to hold on to him. I took hime to his DR. and he examined him, but couldn't find anything wrong. The medical Dr. did say teething can sometimes cause unusual symtoms. When I talked to a dentist, he said no--teething wouldn't cause those symtoms. He didn't those symtoms very often just for about six months off and on. My son is now 27 years old with great teeth.
A little about me: I'm retired school teacher. I just have one son.

I know my son had a fever last summer, that lasted, on and off, for 7 days. It turned out to be a sinus infection and, after 7 days, we started a round of antibiotics and it went away right after that. . He had no other nasal symptoms except a headache (which I associated with a high fever) and the fever and tiredness. If it is just a virus, it will break and magically go away. Don't know about teething. I really hadn't experienced that at that age. I would even check with your local Pharmacist, if you have a relationship with them, and ask them if you are seeing this kind of virus in your area. They are a wealth of information when it comes to this kind of stuff in the neighborhood (unless that's where your Dr. is - mine is hour away). My gut tells me he is just rebounding from being so sick but, if this disposition continues, I would go back to your pediatrician. Good luck.

First..good luck. My son wasn't great at cutting teeth either. Tylenol, and Advil were my friends. But advice from my mom helped too. She used to use a clean wash cloth, wet it, chill it in the fridge, and tie it it big knots. This was our teether. The roughness of the cloth helped roughen gums so teeth cut easier, the coolness helped the pain, and water kept us chewing ( nawing) on it longer. The knots helped prevent chokeing..but as always..never leave the child un attended with it.
Doc liked the idea at the time, and suggested putting a finger in the rag and massageing the gums. He also joked about.." put two fingers of whiskey in a glass, dip your 2 fingers in and rub the babies gums if you think it will help. Then drink the rest cause you're gonna need it !". Yes it was a JOKE.. but it illistrates the need for patience. Again..good luck.

Sounds like your son's body is healing. He needs to sleep to heal. He may be crying so much because he is tired and still woozy from the flu. Sometimes when we have the flu our muscles ache...might be true with him too.

Another thought...did he recently have any shots? This may be a reaction. Many kids are allergic to the many different components in the vaccine and he may be one of these kids. Watch him closely and if he seems to be a different kid after his recovery from the illness see your doctor.

One more thing...children become what you tell them they are. If you label your daughters wild...that's what they will be (fast forward to the teen age years). If you label your son a monster that's what he will believe he is (fast forward to self loathing and terrorizing the other kids). How about referring to them all as full of energy?

Think about it!

Happy Holidays!

I recomend homeopathic teething tablets for general teething symptons. Children learn quickly what works for them and often continue an attention getting behavior even after the original ailment ends. Cutting teeth can be miserable for some.
I remember hearing a shot of whisky was good. Mom sticks her finger in and rubs it on babies gum, then drinks the rest.Repeat as needed. (Just a joke) Love and laughter are the best medicine. Grandma of 14

Let's see, he's a guy, little man, sleeps a lot...sounds normal to me.But could he have an ear infection? But if you ruled that out Mother of sons here at your service, just letting you know that it sounds like the poor little one probably is just catching up from when he was sick and mom, you are probably warm and cuddly and safe feeling, so perhaps that's it. The teething itself probably doesn't make them want to sleep because they can feel that, but those viruses can do you in bigtime (well at least in my life). But is there anything he'll eat at all? Does he like baths? What makes him happy? Perhaps I'm old fashioned but a little spoiling might help. But if he appears more than tired, like listless, I'd like to say err on the safe side and call the doctor again. Can you feel if the teeth are in or not? Is he taking anything? If you think it's teething does baby orajel work or something else to help. It's so hard when they can't tell us. I have two sons and they were so vastly different. One would be screaming about an ear infection and not lay down and the other would just lay there and not say anything.
Good luck, I know this is so frustrating. And I'm jealous. I could never have any daughters or more children so give them all a hug for me.

He's sleepy because the fever took everything out of him. Fever leaves us weak and helpless (picture your husband with a fever) and children are not as strong as we are. Push lots of fluids and let him sleep as much as possible. He'll be driving you nuts again before you know it. Enjoy the peace while you have it. They teeth coming in will make him crabby and irritable not really sleepy unless he's in pain and can't sleep.

L.,
When my son was teething he was VERY ANGRY AND CRABBY all the time. He too had a high temp. and slept all the time or was screaming and crying all the time. I wouldn't worry about this. Sounds very typical to me. All children are different.... my nephew is teething right now, and he is just the happiest baby you've ever met! He's probably tired from his lack of sleep and trying to catch up, and on top of that in some pain from his teeth. Don't worry everything sounds fine to me. :)

Not unusual. My friends little boy had the same thing - fever which went away, but appetite was not there. It is okay, just make sure he drinks. When he eats, for now, feed favorites. Sometimes, like us, when we have had a virus or something, our tastes and appetites are affected - they are no different. Watch him and let him sleep - may still have something or a cold sometimes follows this. If you see anything unusual, call the doctor. Crabby is normal for any one that hasn't felt good. Like us - his body is probably telling him sleep for recovery. Hydration is the most important, believe me, he will let you know when he wants to eat. My girls did.

Has your son broke out in a rash? My son and my sisters daughter had this. Roseola. They were MISERABLE!! Nothing can really be done. It has to work its way through his system. Make sure he drinks water and juice.
Enjoy the time to hold him, poor guy. keep your chin up.
Good Luck!

L.,
I am sorry to hear your son isn't feeling well. The first thing I think is SO important is to trust your instincts. If you feel something isn't right with your child take him to the dr. or talk to the pharmist if the doctor isn't helpful. My daughter had a high fever for a few days, I took her to the dr. He said it was an ear infection. I KNEW it wasn't by how she was behaving. Long story short, she ended up needed to be admitted to the hospital, because of a rash that suddenly appeared, the ER doc, thought it was something potentially deadly. She is fine, but my point is, you know your kids and their moods/behaior better than anyone and if you think something isn't right trust your gut.
And if you think it could be teething a little tylonel or highland teething tablets can always ease the discomfort.
Hope he's doing better.
K.
