Question About How My Girlie Walks

Just wondering if anyone else has had experience with their baby(s) walking on the inside of their feet? My daughter does very well walking, but seems to get up/push off with the inside of her feet/ankle and her feet continue to kind of collapse inward on the inside of her foot. Anyone know if she might need special shoes? I make sure she always has supportive shoes on when she's up and about (all the time), but as soon as they're off, she reverts right back to walking with the inside of her feet. Input please?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for all their great advice. After hearing so much that I should try no shoes, it kind of makes sense to me too. I am taking her to the Dr. today though so we'll see what he says. 4 shots today though AHHHHH! My hands are sweaty alrady! Whoever reads this, say a prayer for Maggie today K?

Thanks again! I just love all you moms and grandmas!

Hello- how long has she been walking? What you are explaining is not incredibly uncommon. I'm a physical therapist who works with kids and get this question a lot. I would actually decrease the use of shoes as toddlers need to explore the floor with bare feet to develop foot muscles and arches appropriately. If there is no change in her positioning after a couple months, you can bring it up w her doc. The good news is there is likely no damage being done to her muscles/joints and she will probably outgrow it. Feel free to e-mail if you have any other ?s- J.

I would suggest proper shoes for her,I would continue telling her often to walk straight or stand up straight if it is posture.with my children who do the same thing I continue to ask them which way their feet go.thats the way I put it its short and grabs their attention. you sound like a good parent and concerned with health and growth with your child it is very nice to see a mom with such love and enjoyment with parenting!!1
hope the suggestion works, keep up the good work!!

love,L.

I agree with the less shoes thing. I used the little slippers to keep her feet warm and socks on, but they had thin, soft soles so her feet could develop. If that doesn't seem to help, ask her pediatrician, the nurses should be more than happy to help you with any questions you have.

I was told that babies should be barefoot as much as possible until they are two years old. I was a little worried about my daughter's foot position as she was learning to walk and the pediatrician told me that they often walk on the insides of their feet for a little bit, then over-correct and walk on the outsides for a bit, and then they figure out how to stand correctly...

Take her to a foot doctor, I'm sure they can give you advice on what to do. She may need special shoes to straighten her muscles out. Better to do it now then wait until later when more damage has been done. I wore support shoes for six months when I was young. (Back in the 70's) According to my mom, I hated them and if I could, I'd take them off. But it did help my feet a lot.
