Hi - I was hoping someone would have some good advice about how to get prenatal care for my nanny (who is from central america). Is there health insurance for foreigners? Are there prental packages that you can pay for up front to reduce the cost? Any information would be most helpful!

the MI healthcare will take care of the baby as it will be born here and a citizen.... if she doesnt find healthcare she can still go to an emergency room in labor and give birth in a hospital - call ahead first to make sure I am right, but in California it is illegal to refuse emergency medical treatment and labor is considered an emergency. If I were you I would call to Blue Cross Blue Shield, or do some research regarding au pair through the Department of State I do know if you hire an au pair they require a J1 Visa and they receive health insurance... there may be something that could be picked up that way. I would also google foreign national medical insurance. There are many people working here that have health insurance that are not us citizens.... I think your only problem is the fact that she is already pregnant. Most if not all individual plans have a pre existing clause and if not will have a waiting period so in other words american or foreign she may be on her own for prenatal. There are places that would offer low or no cost visits - most important make sure she is eating healthy and taking a multi vitamin with a minimum of 400 folic acid.

planned parenthood counsels abortion I would be wary of that place.... other church run pregnancy places seem to counsel adoption beware there as well unless that is the desire....

Does she have her green card? Is she a US citizen? Those are important questions to establish her eligibility.

I know of a prenatal vitamin that she can drink rather than the big old pills that we all are used to. Let me know if you want to know more!

You could ask your own healthcare provider if they have a package to purchase. We had an employee awhile back who didn't have any insurance and became pregnant. They were able to pay a higher premium and join the group insurance. Good thing it was available because their baby was born at 28 weeks with lots of problems.
I am not for adding people to our MediCaid roles, especially for non US citizens, but I think immigrants..legal or otherwise are eligible. Why didn't she think about this BEFORE getting pregnant??

I would think it will make a difference if she's here legally or illegaly. CAll 1800 MI CHILD and talk with them re: health care for the baby. There must be providers for pregnant
women who are not here legally, as she is not the first. Try SW Detroit if the suburbs don't help.

She can get Mi child if she has the correct income requirements and has a social security #. She can get that for herself while she is prgenant and then the baby will get it when it is born if she the right income and documentation. You can find the Michild website easily, just google it, and can even apply online.
