Question About Baby "Soft" Spots

My daughter is only 10 months old, but ever since she was born I have noticed that she does not have much of a soft spot, and recently when I checked it seems that it is no longer there. Is this something I need to be concerned about because I was always under the impression the reason it was there is because the brain needed room to grow and as it did her skull would become fully developed.

What can I do next?

I myself would just ask the Dr. on your next visit as long as the baby seems fine. Every child is different on that priogress. The soft spots main funtion which is to help the baby clear the birth canal is over with. If you are extremely worried, just make a Dr. appt. and make sure!

My kids didn't have this problem but I know a lady whos daughter had to have surgery because her skull grew together too fast. I feel that you should go to the dr and have them look into it. It seems weird that they havn't caught it already. Good luck!!

Hi M.,
You have nothing to worry about. The soft spots are there because the plates of the skull do not fuse together untill about 8 to 10 months. They are seperate at birth so that the plates can shift as needed during labor and delivery. Your daughter is perfectly normal.

Brightest Blessings,

hi M.:
I have a daughter now she is 9 years old but when she born she didn't have a soft spot I was really worry but the doctor said it was normal the weird thing we found out tha she did have a small soft spot and they were two in different places of the head so that scared more well I don't know how normal that was but she is growing up with just 9 years getting ready to go high school I'm very proud to have a beautyful small little girl sometimes we as parents get more worry about little things.....my grandma used to say when the babies loose they soft spot fast that means they're going to be very intelligent people in a future I don't know how true is it but for sure that doesn't affect them while they're growing up

I thought they were definitely supposed to be gone by 10 months. I think they're there so that the skull can reshape itself during labor for ease of coming through the birth canal.

M.,
The human skull isnt actually one solid bone It is made up of three bones connected by cartlidge. When your daughter was born this cartlidge was verry soft so that the three bone making up her skull could squeez together as she went through the birth canal. The soft spot is where these three bones come together. As a person grows this cartlidge gets harder but is never as hard as bone. This allows the head to grow with the brain.
Just a small fact. When your baby is born you can touch the soft spot on their head. This cartlidge is fairly thick. So it's not like it is just skin protecting that small part of the brain.

I hope this was helpful.

Alittle about me: I am 22 yars old with a 19 mont hold daughter. I learned a lot about this kind of stuff when I was going to school for medical assisting. It didn't exactly work out since my daughter decided to come six weeks before she was due. It is nice when I can use the info. I learned for something. I guess it wasn't a complete waste.

I would get it checked with your doctor. The soft spot begins filling in slowly over the years, but that part of the skull isn't actually full thickness until about 25yrs (yes years!) of age. There is a certain amount of growth that the brain does & yes that spot is open because of this. I would encourage you to at least call your pediatritian & see if he's concerned.
Hope that it's nothing in the end!

I would ask a dr. my brother-in-law was born without a soft spot and had to have surgery to enlarge his skull. I am also concerned because my 4-m-old has a very small one which doesn't pulse much. I remember my nephew had a large pulsing one for 2 years.
