If they are big, deep and hurt to the touch then it's cystic acne. And yes, they do stay around quite a while. The discoloration afterward is also normal.
When you first start feeling the little tingling where one is about to start, begin ice therapy on it. You may freeze some water in a styrofoam cup, then peel it down to the frozen water line to use. That's what my derm used to do, but I just use an ice cube at this point. I hold the ice cube on it, concentrating right at the heart of it, for at least 2 minutes. Do this in the morning and at night, with a clean face.
Along with this, I begin an immediate regimen of benzoyl peroxide -- get the 10% formulation for the best, strongest results. I apply this, generally with a q-tip (to keep my dirty fingers off the pimple), to the pimple probably 5 times a day. I mean business with those nasty suckers! Because if mine turns into a full-blown cystic pimple, it literally takes months to get rid of. I'm careful to ONLY put it right on the pimple, otherwise you get a big, dried out red ring around the area.
I haven't dealt with this in quite awhile, ever since I started using NeoStrata Gel Plus AHA 15 at night. The $33 bottle lasts M. about 7-8 months; you use it very sparingly. If you have not used a glycolic acid before, you need to build up your tolerance as it can cause sensitivity. Neostrata does sell lotions that have a lower AHA. Honestly, this is my miracle product and also helps with fine lines. Bonus!! Good luck!
