Pushing Very Hard for Loose Stools

My 2 and a 1/2 year old has had an upset stomach for the past 4 days. We have been giving him a lot of liquids. He seems to be in a good mood & playful. He has been getting better. Yesterday he went only twice but both times he experienced a lot of pain in his stomach before going. Also, he had to push really hard, though the stools were not hard.
I don't understand why he needed to push so much. Anyone seen that in their children?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the replies. We met his pediatrician. He said this is some stomach virus doing the rounds. He just wants him on the brat diet. He felt his stomach and said that there was no blockage. Thanks again!

I was thinking the same thing as Erikka. But if this continues I would call the pedi and ask them which stool softener to use. I know they came out with PediaLax, but I don't know anything about it. Keep up with the liquids! If he likes watermelon that is great too because it adds fruit to his diet and it's packed with H2O!

His stomach could just be cramping really bad and he is pushing because of that then he just has loose stool. When you get sick the bloating and cramping hurts so when you go you usually will push even if you have just loose stool. Do you notice if he has any gas? If he does then that is probably the reason why, but call your doctor just to make sure.

I had that problem with both of my kids (still do). It's important to get them regular because the pushing and it being hard can cause anal fissures (sounds lovely, huh). My daughter even had to go to the hospital once to be deimpacted (sounds even funner, huh) Both my kids take a little Miralax (sp?) in their juice every day. It used to be prescription but now it's over the counter. Anyway, that was what was prescribed by their pediatrician. Hope that helps.

My 8 1/2 year old still has issues. She frequently has large and hard stools. When she is having problems, we give her Miralax. It is over the counter. My pediatricain perscribed it when she was 4 years old. It is suppose to be safe enough that she could take it the rest of her life. I would also suggest that you keep your boy away from bananas and cheese for a short time. They are known for stopping people up. Try to make sure that he is drinking plenty of fluids. Try adding more fruit. Specifically try adding apple juice. Good luck. I know how difficult it can be to watch your child in pain and struggling.

He may be constipated. Try giving him a little prune juice and see if that helps.

One possibility is that he really is constipated. Just because the stool that comes out is soft doesn't mean that there isn't firm stool still inside that is not moving. Sometimes when there is constipation, other softer stool will squeeze around the hardened stool to "bypass" it and the softer stool will come out while the firm stool doesn't pass. This can make for difficult and painful potty time. Feel his tummy for bloating or hardness.

Of course, this is just one possibility and may not be it at all.

Hope he feels better soon!

Andria Mraz's son had that problem. She found a great tasting liquid nutrition that completely cleared up her son's pain. He used to cry each time he tried to empty his bowels. Now, he asks her for it every day because he notices the difference when he takes it.

Milk is a common culprit for constipation. If he drinks it I'd consider removing it for a week to see the results. Your child really doesn't need milk or a milk sub but you can use rice or almond milk if no IgE food allergies.

Hi A.,
Have you tried giving him fruits, like Strawberries, Cherries, grapes, grapefruits, and all they yummy fruits that are in season. My little one use to have the same problem, but I started giving her fruits and plenty of them (she loves fruits) and it loosen those bowls, she didn't have to push, and her tummy stopped cramping. Another benefit that I like it takes the place of other “treats” like cookies and other junk food that I'd rather not give her.

Hope this helps
