If it suits him, keep it. I had a neighbor taht had a dog named East. Then she got married, they got another pup and named him Wood. The kitten's was then named Clint--fit him because he was one tough kitty.
Hi moms! I need your unbiased opinions!
Just got a puppy (8wks old) and his given name is "West". We are trying to decide if we like the name or if we're going to change it. Not set on any other name either. Never heard of this name before and it's kind of growing on me (on all of us actually!)
Thanks for your help!
It kind of does fit him! and I didn't think it would or that we'd keep it. He's bl lab / Australian shephard mix. "Aussies" are known as being cattle dogs "out West" so maybe that's where it came from???
*Funny Patricia! didn't think of that! LOL!

Does it fit the puppy? If it does, then keep it!
I got a cat once whose given named was "Parkay". I changed it, immediately.
I love it. I even like it for a human.
I think it's adorable and totally different and therefore I love it!
"Parkay" Nikki G.? . . . for some reason this made me giggle out loud.
I don't have a problem with "West" though I'd probably start calling him "Westie." And if he's not a Westie breed that could be confusing LOL.
I just think it would be fun when he's running to catch a ball to yell "GO West!"
I love the name, I say keep it. I adopted a mini schnauzer almost a year ago and I kept his name. His previous owner was a japanese man and had given him a japanese name........so it was a bit strange rolling off the tongue for us but I kept his given name because he was already 2 yrs old and truth be known I didn't want to change anything about him; he was perfect ( with hard to pronounce name and all ) . :)) Now his name comes naturally to me and he certainly responds to it, and it fits him.
If the name suits him, keep it.
We just got a new puppy last week. My hubby bestowed the honor of naming him on me. I had to meet the dog first.
My GD came up with the name Moe. Hubby expanded and we decided his formal name will be Molekai but his friends can call him Moe!
I know a 10 year-old boy named West (short for Westcott). I like it.
Is that a name that would easily be understood if shouted due to the dog getting loose? For me, the answer is no. Just like you have to take things into consideration for kids take some of these things into consideration when naming a pet:
Does it sound like a command?
Does it sound like a human's name (in the house)?
Is it easily pronnounced by all family members?
Is it easy to shout if pet is lost?
Can it easily fit onto a dog name tag?
Those are a few things to consider when naming your pet... good luck.
I like Westin and then call him West if you want. There is a Westin, MO then I see someone else suggested that name. I like it a lot and then shorten it to West.
in my house it would morph, everything cute has to have the "y" on the end. Like Angela said.... I'd call him Westy. I wouldn't like that, because the Westies are an Irish Gang. To stop myself, I'd end up calling him Adam - as in Adam West and then, screw it. He's BatMan.
:) I like the name West.
My son's name is Weston. We call him Wes for a nickname. Could be an option for you too :)
I like it!
~I worked with the most handsome man once, his name was Westin.
I would go with that instead of 'Westy' any day!
Keep it. It is different and cool.
To I love Schnauzers G I have a Chihuahua named Kira and he is boy. Kira is Japanese for "killer" and it fits him when it comes to strangers.
