Hello moms. I'm a little freaked out! I went and got a Beagle puppy 5 days ago at a local Pet store, I took her to the vet 4 days after we got her and found out she has round worm. They gave me medicine and he said it should be gone within 48hrs. I guess you are always suppose to wash your hands after handling a new puppy. Well, I didn't know this b/c we've never had one so young-8wks. I have 3 kids. 2 yrs, 5, and 8yrs. Now I'm worried they have gotten something nasty!!! Have you ever known anyone to get worms from puppies??? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have never known anyone to get worms from a puppy.
Puppies are notoriously wormy and she will likely have to be wormed several times before she reaches 6 months old.
Next time please do not buy a puppy from a pet store, there's no telling where this puppy came from it could have come from a puppy mill.
But as far as the worms goes no I've never know anyone to get worms from a puppy.

Oh the joys of puppy mill puppies.

I can't add anything to DVMMOM's post. But I can add that I am very familiar with beagles and they are complete pains in the butt. You need to have her registered for training classes yesterday. If you don't, you are going to seriously regret this purchase.

As long as you practice common sense hygiene (washing hands after playing with puppy, picking up poo, etc.), you should be fine. Every puppy in the world has roundworms, regardless of where they come from - they pick them up from the mother when they nurse. Most treatments have to be given at least twice to get rid of all the worms, so make sure you follow up with your veterinarian and have a stool sample checked at every visit when he comes in for vaccines. The stool has to examined under a microscope for worm eggs, so you won't necessarily see anything yourself, but sometimes if they have large numbers of worms, they can pass some adults in the stool or even vomit them up (they look like strands of spaghetti). Sorry if that grosses you out! Just be sure your kids are washing their hands after playing with puppy and before eating because they could just as easily get exposed playing in the park and picking something up in the soil from another dog who had passed stool there at some point. Kids can pick them up and they can cause serious problems, including liver damage, and blindness if a worm happens to migrate into an eyeball. Again, sorry if this grosses you out, but also be assured that it is rare, and no reason to not own a puppy.

Also make sure you get puppy on monthly heartworm preventative - heartworms are a whole separate issue and can be deadly. The preventative medication that dogs are given every month should help prevent roundworm as well.

there are many things puppies and dogs can pass to humans, round worm is one of them, that's why you're supposed to wash your hands after handling her. This is NOT the end of the world, even if your children did get round worms, they're very curable, and at the worst this is a good lesson for your children to learn.

Dogs at pet stores are notorious for having any number of issues. In the future, I would avoid them like the plauge. Don't stress too much, help your puppy, have lots of fun, and please KEEP a leash on her ALL the time. Beagles are VERY well known for running off and never coming back!

I'm a dog behaviorist/trainer so if you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask.

It is possible as others have mentioned. If you are worried about the kids, give their doctor a call and they can probably be checked or given a dewormer too. Most puppies do have some kind of parasite and that is why they usually have several fecal checks done.

Have fun with your new puppy.

Yes, this is one of the many ways that parasites are passed from animals to humans. We can also get heartworm that is responsible for many of the human heart conditions. I specialize in parasites in people. I would high recommend that you black walnut (herb) on your children. It will not harm the children at all but will irritate the skin of the parasite (worms) and they will die. You can get it in liquid for the children and capsules for adults. Mix the liquid with a little bit of juice (a couple of Tablespoons) and give it to them. If you have any pets, you should worm them with the appropriate vet formula at least once every 6 months and humans should use a parasite cleaner for a month every year. Parasites can be responsible for cancer diagnoses ie liver flukes = liver cancer. They can literally eat their way through your organs. Children are especially susceptable and injured by parasites. They touch the pet then put their hands in their mouth. Yes parasites are nasty. And yes, you can get any parasite from any pet - puppies and grown dogs, cats, birds. The worms the dogs have wont transfer to your kid...you should be fine.
Just make sure you are giving the pup his heart worm pills every month from now on and you wont have a problem
Congrats!!!
I just read the other posts...I didnt train my beagle professionally but I did invest in a training collar,,,best thing I ever did
