Public Toilets with Little Boy

My 2 year old son is potty training. He does great at home, he can pee sitting down or standing up. But we have a lot of trouble with public bathrooms. He's just too short to reach! At home he will stand on a stool and aim in, or stand on the floor and lean right against the toilet with his privates hanging over the edge. I am somewhat of a germaphobe, and I can't let him do that with a public toilet! Also at home he wants to take his pants & pull-up all the way off, which is really difficult to do when he's got shoes on. I've tried standing him on the seat but he usually ends up peeing on his clothes. So far the only way it's ever worked is if I hold him up over the toilet like an airplane and he pees straight down in. But we can't do that forever! Please give me some tips that will make this easier!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the great tips - I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with this problem! I've gotten to try out most of these ideas... he won't stand on a wipes box, I think it doesn't feel secure enough, but he likes to stand on my feet. I've started keeping an eye out for a stool somewhere in the bathroom - I was surprised at how many public bathrooms have one! Also I hadn't realized how much taller the handicap toilets are, I usually went to that stall because it was roomier, but the other stalls have shorter toilets. Thanks again!

My son will be 3 in August, and he sits to pee. It's easier at home and in public. Until very recently, he was also stripping completely from the waist down, which meant that we had to take his shoes off in public bathrooms. (Yes, it's a huge pain.) I've continued to work with him, and he can finally pee on a public toilet sitting down with his pants at his ankles.

As for you, if holding him up like an airplane works for now, just do it. I promise you won't be doing that forever. Eventually, he will be tall enough to either stand on his own or sit comfortably on the toilet. :-)

This phase will pass before you know it.

I had the same issues with my two boys. I would usually stand behind them and let them stand on my feet while I kind of held them under their arms, and that seemed to give them just enough extra height to reach the potty without touching it or peeing on themselves.

I guess my kids always sat down in a public bathroom to pee unless there was a kid-size urinal in the bathroom (some places have those). Just make sure that he "tucks" before peeing and if you put the paper down on the toilet seat first, make sure that he isn't going to pee on it - it will soak up the urine and run it all over his butt and drip on his clothes (sounds like something that has maybe happened to me a time or three!). As far as wanting to take the pants and pull ups off, I would let the kids slip off one shoe and only have the pants/undergarment on one leg - it worked as a good compromise until they didn't do that anymore. Also, don't leave the house without a change of pants - you just still never know at this age :)

One thing - don't try to lift him . . . nothing worse than throwing your back or shoulder out! (Been there, done that, too).

Good luck!

I had to chuckle about this... my hubby and I just talked about my son using the "trough" at Wrigley Field for the first time. I am mortified at the thought of my son's little body pushing up against the edge while he stands next to big guys, potentially getting peed on!!! Well, that debate is not over, yet =)

Anyway, I noticed that the toilets in the reserved stalls are taller to accommodate people with wheelchairs. Therefore, we always head for the regular stalls. My son stands on my feet if needed. Also, I drape toilet paper over the middle and across the top (two pieces). Our rule is that he must have his underwear and pants up before he flushes (to avoid dragging precious cargo across the toilet from which I tried to protect him.)

I tried the fold-up seat in the bag. It pinched my son's legs if he shifted once seated on it. Also, I had to cover the original toilet seat anyway because his legs dangled on it or the bowl.

Take heart... your son will be tall enough soon! Good luck in the meantime!

Babies r us has a travel seat for toilets that folds and fits in a zip lock bag. It costs $10. You could bring another small zip lock bag of clorox wipes to clean it after. They also have disposable toilet seat covers that are extra large so kids don't touch the toilet if they try to hold on.

Get a folding travel seat and make a little pouch for it and stick it in the diaper bag.

Keep a travel package of chlorox wipes in your purse, wipe the potty and let him sit. He should be able to position himself downward into the toilet to where when he goes he should hit the inside of the toilet.

Our stool makes my son too high at home so I just stand him on my feet to give him a little boost to where his package doesn't rest on the toilet rim, I too am grossed out by public toilets so I do the foot thing when we are out too. Try that, but I know some toilets are extra high!

I would simply pick up my son under his arms and hold him up about the height of his stool he used at home and depending on their weight it can be a bit much but it was easiest for him just to simply be lifted up.

Thanks!

My two-year-old daughter and I were having the same issues. This toilet can stand on the floor and he can sit on it or it can be used as a smaller seat that'll fit on the adult toilets. It comes with a few disposable bags, but buy the refill pack. This is also great for the car when you're at a park where toilets are not very accessible. It has a little carrying bag with it so it's not so obvious as to what you're carrying through a restaurant or whatever. Worked out great for us! Good luck!

i am a mom of a boy - so i know your pain lol - actually i still have to clean behind the toilet regularky coz he is such a bad aim!

my son would stand on my feet to give him a little more height, but you can also take some toilet seat covers with you, or some wipes to wipe the seat off, let him sit on the toilet instead of stand, the airplane trick sounds so funny lol

I used to just hold my son up off the ground from behind--til I was sure my arms would snap off. :-)
It will get easier as he gets a little taller.

Just have him sit on the seat. I understand the germaphobe part, not being one myself, I can't relate. But think about all the things he touches that are much grosser. Just make sure he washes his hands after he is done, and that will take care of any germs.

Well you could buy this thing http://www.mypeepeebottle.com/ or just carry your own bottle from home and rinse it out after each use. It just becomes a pee bottle instead of drinking bottle!

If you are still carrying a diaper bag, you get a thick and sturdy wipe box and put that down on the floor and just use your arms to steady him... this way he is safe with you holding him, and he is up higher, and you will always have the same set up with you no matter where you go....plus you can use the wipe to clean the toilet before he goes and prevent some of those germs! Good Luck
