My oldest just turned 2 on June 1st. She has been totally potty trained for about 4 months now. My problem is that when we are out and about, she wants to use every public restroom that there is (wether she has to go potty or not). It is a very hard thing to do when I also have a 4 month old that I have to lug into the bathroom as well. What really gets to me is that she usually says that she has go to potty when we are loading up in the car to leave. Then I have to get both kids back out of the car, go back inside to use the public restroom, just to have her sit on the potty and say that she doesn't have to go. By this time I am usually upset that I had to take both kids back into the store to use the gross public restrooms, just to have her not actually go. I really try not to take it out on her, but sometimes it results to me being angry with her. How do I explain to her, in a way that she will understand, that we only use public restrooms when we really have to go? I have tried before, and it obviously has not worked. Another problem is that my 4 month old is getting too heavy to carry around in her infant seat, so soon I am going to have to just be carrying her or having her in a front pack. What do I do when this time comes and my daughter has to use a public restroom? The baby doesn't sit up yet, so I can't really put her in a cart and take that into the bathroom...What do I do?

I kept a potty in my car that the kids could use. I also kept a small bin with TP, wipes, Cloorox wipes, germy gel, sanitary pads (cheap ones) and doggie clean up bags. The bag goes in the potty, the pad goes in the bag to absorb moisture. Once the child was done I would wipe the seat with a Clorox wipe and put it in the bag. The tie it closed to throw into the nearest trash can. This potty also worked great for trips to the park that had no bathrooms. You can buy a travel potty from Right Start but the disposal bags are almost $2 a bag. I hated having my kids use public restrooms anyway at that age. Eewww....

Hi J.:
It's wonderful, that you were able to totally potty train your daughter at this young age, however, now she feels the pressure of (not dare having accidents)This is the reason she continues to say she has to go.To leave no room for unsureness. she doesn't want to disappoint you or get you mad,so she goes several times,to make sure.Looks like you've created a "potty monster" in your quest for early success. lol. I wish you and your darlin daughter the best. J. M

Hi J.,
What about a baby carrier (sling or Baby Bjorn) for your newborn? That way she'll be right up next to you, and you don't have to worry about where to put her on that gross bathroom floor. My daughter loved to be in one, and I carried her until she got heavy enough to start hurting my back.

This seems to be a stage that kids go through. I remember my nieces always wanted to go to the bathroom whenever we went anywhere with them at that age. They're bored, and saying that they have to go to the bathroom gives them some control over the shopping trip, not to mention they get to explore other areas of the store besides the boring clothes that mom is looking at. My oldest niece always used to tell her mom she was thirsty as soon as she got in the car, then drink down the entire contents of whatever her mom gave her to drink, and of course she then had to go to the bathroom as soon as we got wherever we were going. Of course it created some funny memories for us too! I can remember taking her to the bathroom in a restaurant; I went into the stall next to her. In a loud voice, she asked "Are you going poop?" "No." "Why not?" "Because I don't have to go." I got some funny looks and smiles from the people at the table closest to the bathroom door when we exited the restroom - I'm not sure if it's because my niece is so cute or because they heard our exchange.

How about taking your daughter to the bathroom before you get in the car? Tell her that this is her opportunity to go if she has to go, and if she doesn't, she needs to hold it until you get home (or to the next store)? Or at least ask her if you have to go before you head out to the car, and tell her she's going to have to wait and hold it if she doesn't go now.

Get the "On The Go" portable potty, which you can have in your car... you can get it from www..amazon.com
We got that when my daughter was that age and it STILL has come in handy.... VERY useful product and saves a lot of time and is just in time for sudden pee requests on the road or at the park or in the parking lot or when you are stuck in traffic and they can't hold their bladder anymore... my daughter even at her age, has used it when we are no where near a toilet/bathroom.

All the best,
Susan

Hi J., first of all, be gratefull she's potty trained, I read so much on mama source about 2/3 not potty trained. Get a stroler for the baby, that will get the weight off of your arms. If she says she needs to potty, and you don't think she does tell her she ha to wait till you get home, or the next store, you can tell when a child has to pee, but I wouldn't stop every where. it's hard to explane to a 2 year old you only use public pottys when you really have to go, she's been trained since 21 months, she has good control and should be able to hold it til you get home depe ding on where you are. Hope this helped J. L.
