Does anyone know about puberty in very very young girls. My daughter is 5-1/2 but she is 4.2ft tall and 60 lbs. She is going from one extreme to another as my husband told me that she is acting like me just before I start my period. She has just a little bit if under arm hair, looks normal, leg hair about like others her age, I haven't noticed any on private area and she does have some body odor. I do have a call into the ped but I haven't heard back from them yet.

What can I do next?

A lot of younger girls (and boys) are having signs of puberty at much too young an age. I personally believe it it has a lot to do with the steroids and hormones in our food. A friend of a friend, had a girl who showed signs of starting puberty at 8; the father's job caused them to have to move somewhere in Europe - where they do not use steroids and hormones in their animals - - within a few months, the little girl was back to normal. I did not know about these things years ago and my oldest son is huge, has breast development and started puberty too young. My younger son (almost 7) eats almost no meat (only what he might occassionally eat at a restaurant) with antibiotics, steroids, or hormones...so far he is a string bean and no signs of hormonal activity.

I don't have much answers for you but I know my daughter has and I mean has to wear deoderant or she is stinky=) Let me know what you find out when you take her to the Dr. I'm curious as to what they say it is. It's the growth hormones in the meat & dairy that we eat. They grow full grown chickens in a month, for OUR food consumption. THIS is FDA approved. Of course the growth hormones are passed to us as we consume this food. I don't know how you can stop it now, but if you start eating ORGANIC foods, you all won't get any more growth hormones. Health food stores sell organic and natural meat (only buy NATURAL from a health food store, everything that says "natural" is not "natural". Local grocery stores are starting to sell organic milk, butter, cheese, eggs, and some meats. Organic food is grown without injected growth hormones and antibiotics. It also means the animals eat only grains that doesn't have pesticides and no meat by-products (you don't even want to know).

Hope this helped you.

I am a very tall woman 6' and I developed very quickly as a young girl. I began my menses at right after my 8th birthday I was in the second grade! I was very tomboyish and it was difficult for me to adjust however, my mother had a great realtionship with my teacher and other educators at my school and they were all very supportive of helping me. My Mom took me out to dinner and explained very simply that when married couples have babies it is necessary for a woman to have her menses so that she can have a baby. Mom explained that I have many years before that happens : ) but that I am growing up and becoming a young lady and with that comes responsibility. Mom says that she saw signs a year before that I was developing quickly and the ped confirmed that I may get my menses early. I was 5'7" by the time I was 9 years old. But I was very much a little girl who had to mature and grow just a tall little girl.

Kristen,
Wow, that is young to start a period. Really young. I was 9 years old when mine started, and that was concidred very young. You should definatley take her to see pediatirican...make sure there is nothing hormonally going on that is wrong. There are cases of it though...go to http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=2610353 and read that article. I will be thinking of you and your daughter,,because I will be honest with you,,getting it at 9 years old was HARD. I was terribly embarrased, none of my friends had it, none wanted to talk about it or know about it, ones that did made fun of me,,i couldnt swim in the summer, and didnt want to ride bikes..or ride my horse...tampons were am awful concept to me at that age. There is more to it than it just happeing...when you are that young, (even 9 years old) it is just too young to understand what it is all about,,all you know is it is awful. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your daughter. (ps..i had no hair under my arms, or pubic hair)

I am a mother of an 11 year old girl. I also am the oldest of four girls. I would agree greatly with those that have discussed the changes in our food industry. I also remember my youngest sister maturing much sooner than my sister who was only 11 months younger than me and we were all just one year apart in age on down.

Some of today's schools are well equiped to help girls. Some of the tools they use are the same cartoon figures they used when I was a girl. And today's 10 and 11 year olds are still embarressed to be in the classroom together to discuss the issues. I can just imagine what they might have to show your daughter. What I found helpful in approaching these issues are the American Girl books. There are books on bullies, on friendships, and books on a girl's body. There are so many emotions going on all of these books tend to tie into one another for girls at this time. There was also a book I had when I was young by Judy Blume, "Are You There God It's Me Margaret." I gave this to my daughter when she was eight. She told me she was too young for this, although she was able to understand it. I explained to her she would be ahead of her friends and she'd know what they were talking about when the time came. I also explained what had happened to me when I discovered my first "episode" and because of this book and my mom I wasn't scared. If your daughter isn't able to read just yet this may be something you can read together.
Good Luck.
