I have just become the new President of our PTO for the 2008/2009 school year. Does anyone have any advice? We used to be a district wide PTO Board with vps for each school, but then last year they changed it to each school having its own board. It is very disorganized and the President from last year is very helpful in that she is answering my questions and all. But like I mentioned last year was the first year there was a board for each school, so it was not something she could just jump into and everything was there for her, which is how I am getting it. I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with working on a PTO Board and if you can give me some tips and ideas of fundraisers that maybe worked for you. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Congratulations on your position. Good for you to dedicate so much time to help others. The only advice I have is to try to include everyone. I have a child with a life-threatening peanut allergy and our family (and others like us) have not been able to participate in one single PTO-sponsored activity. It's been very difficult emotionally on our little on who wants to be able to join in the fu but cant.

But congrats once again and have fun!!!

I wish you the best of luck !! I am a PTO Co-president for an elem school and there are sooooo many things to do. My school just opened this past school year so I understand when you say it is all new since I started from scratch too. It would be hard to type it all out (advice and connections) - it would go on for pages so if you would like to talk more you can e-mail me ____@____.com and we can talk more then. I could also talk via phone more once you e-mail me. Again best of luck and have fun !! I have really enjoyed this past year !! M.

Hi J.- I'm treasurer for our PTA going on my second year. Our biggest fundraiser is wrapping paper sales- the big ones are Sally Foster, Innisbrook, and a third one I can't remember right now. In a school of a thousand kids we profit well over $20,000 from wrapping paper alone.

There's also the coupon Entertainment Books you can sell. Your school gets half of the money from those. Box Tops is a good moneymaker for us as well, as is Market Day.

In December we have Reindeer Lane, where the kids can buy little trinkets for gifts. The company sends you everything you need, including bags, and you keep a percentage of that. Last year we kept $2800.

Good luck in your new position, I'm sure you'll do well based on the fact that you're planning ahead!

Hi J., Our school changed from PTA to PTO a few years ago, a big reason was because we got to keep the membership fee and not send it to the state PTA. Having a PTO also gave our school the freedom to have an Executive Board instead of a President and vice President. On our Pto Board we have a Husband and wife team, myself, two teachers who take turnes as treasurer, and Principal, and Vice Principal. It is a great group! We meet once a month to share ideas plan any events for the month, and approve any special funds requests from teachers(like educational needs for classroom)It is great, because we are all sharing the decisions on what works.
First we do a Free back to school picnic,we provide hot dogs and families bring a dish to pass. McDonalds gives us free HiC orange drink and cups every year. It is a social event and we have a table to sell membership cards. (set up at the playground side of the school. with DJ and baloon jump, games and prizes)
Fall fun fair. parents and teachers set up games: ring toss, cake walk, face painting, etc. We ask for donations of juice boxes, water, and chips to sell. Play music raffels etc. Oriental Trading prizes.
Movie night is HUGE! We get the district to set up a big screen and we play a new release. We sell popcorn and juice boxes, and ask for $1.oo/ $5 per family admission donation.
Katherine Beich is our fundraiser company. We get 50% profit. We try to sell October to get things back before Thanksgiving break. or Christmas depending on the cataloge. He puts on a great presentation for the kids too and gets them excited. (He also donates prizes for events durring the year.)
Valentines Family dance is my Favorite! Friday night. My husband is the DJ. We sell Pizza, Hot dogs, nacho's,and have juice and chips donated. Families also donate cakes, cookies, and candy and we have a great sweets table 50 cents a small bag. We set up a photo booth with a printer and a digital camera. We usually do a $1000 profit. Parents love it!
Our school also invested in our own popcorn machine and sell popcorn for 50 cents a bag after school on Fridays. Usually $50-$75 profit each time. On warm months some teachers sell popsicles for $1.oo and do very well.
Hot cheetos, walking taco's, Cool pencils are some others.
Krispy Kream is a good fund raiser. $500+ profit depending on your school size and economic level.
Our school has a lot of low income families so we try not to over-do the fundraisers. One big one in the fall one in spring, and a few free or inexpencive "Family" events. There are always local businesses willing to donate small or big items for prizes. Good luck and have fun. Always ask for help, don't try to do it all yourself. Best wishes! J. M.

I'm not on our board, but I do volunteer. We've done the following things to make money for extras:

clothing sale (spring & fall)
sell entertainment books
Send in Box Tops for Education
Campbell Soup Labels
Scholastic Book Fairs (fall and spring is 1/2 off fair)
sell flowers (spring)
restaurant nights (go to certain local restaurants on certain nights and a portion of your bill is donated to the school)
Market Day

There's probably other things they do (like charge a fee to join the association - something like $7 per family).

Good luck to you in your new position!
