Over the past MANY months, I have been researching ADD in teenagers in light of the possibility our 15 year old son may have a milder case of this neurological disorder. He has many of the commonly named symptoms but does not display difficulty in all the areas often listed as part of a classic profile of someone with this challenge. Through some of my reading, I have learned that ADD plays out in many ways, not just the stereotypical way many think of it. This disorder turns out not to be present in many people who we are just sure must have it and is indeed present in others who we would not be quick to identify with the issue. It's way more complicated than most think!

We do not want to rush into anything and are not looking for a quick fix but would like to investigate this with a very trusted, experienced professional who has tested and evaluated people of all ages. I am not really looking for advice on treatment options or suggestions of other possible causes for some of his behavior. We have and will continue to investigate every possibility but attention deficit disorder must stay on the list as too much correlates to eliminate the possibility. Carefully choosing a psychologist or phychiatrist concerning this issue is HUGE to us. Any suggestions for a reputable person in the Fort Worth area would be deeply appreciated. A big thanks to all who respond!

I wish I had just the person to recommend to you, however, I have students that I teach who parents have taken their child to a variety of different psychologists for testing, probably starting with the Child Study Center in FW. Since you have already done lots of homework on the issue, ask some pertinent questions as you seek a professional. I do believe the least successful stradegy is to compile the list of behavior issues, tell our family doctor or pediatrition, and put the child on meds. There is sooo much more to the whole subject. You apparently are doing a great job by researching first. I wish you success.

While I appreciate your caution, you still have some reading to do but I would not wait to get him assessed while you are still learning. Most people are also going to tell you that a psychologist or psychiatrist is not necessary, go to a medical doctor. At 15 you need to ask your son whether he is more comfortable with a pediatrician than you or your husband's doctor. My stepson had ADHD and it was obvious. My daughter has ADD and it seemed more like a defiance, behavioral issue when it was simply the ADD. Many children with ADD do fall through the cracks because without the hyperactivity, many go undiagnosed.

It is a chemical imbalance and if he has ADD, it IS a quick fix because the only thing that corrects the chemical imbalance is medication. Some people believe that the child can "learn" to cope without meds but a psychologist once asked me if I would withhold diabetes medication from my child, which is exactly the same thing, it corrects a chemical imbalance too. If he has ADD and you continue to drag your feet, it is longer that your son feels stupid and/or like he is a bad kid, struggling just to maintain minimal standards for acceptable behavior, really for nothing.

Also recognize that not all kids are going to display all of the characteristics. All they do when they diagnose this condition is to have the teacher and the parent fill out forms about the child's behavior. When there are enough of those behaviors that fall into ADD, that is the diagnosis.

There is apparently some type of imaging that can now be done to diagnose that I saw a clip on Good Morning Texas this morning so I would go to the website and start googling. From what I caught, it allowed them to see exactly what this girl needed in terms of medication which allowed them to manage the condition much better.

The medication is essentially a stimulant so it is pretty easy to determine whether a kid is misdiagnosed. Ironically, when the child needs the medication, a child with ADHD will be able to slow down and focus and a child with ADD will be able to focus. If the child is not ADD/ADHD, the meds will have him bouncing off the walls.

Contact the child study center and don't be insulted but I think you are struggling with dealing with your child not being perfect. If I have misread, I apologize but you seem so serious and grave about this and whether it is ADD or something else, you will figure it out. The important thing is to fix things as quickly as possible and don't buy into the people who try to claim you are a bad parent for doing what a good parent does which is treat the child's condition.

First of all for testing, I HIGHLY recommend Jill Claridge, PhD. She is a licensed Educational Diagnostician. She has tested my son twice. Once while in 9th grade and again last summer before his Jr. in college. She was referred to me by someone at the private school my son attended. I then took him to Dr. Roger Robinson, who she recommended and my pediatrician referred me to. He knew what medications would work best for my son to take and the amount to take. I am pleased to say my son is a Mechanical Engineering student at UT and has a 3.86gpa. He was allowed extended time for tests and finals in HS and in college under the Students with Disabilities Act. You really have to document all of his medications and testing to qualify. My daughter has test anxiety and she also goes to Dr. Robinson. She is in her last year of law school and doing very well. He has helped her tremendously. I know many people that use him and have been pleased with the results. Good Luck.

I would highly recommend the Child Study Center, may take awhile to get in. It took us about 5 months. We've used them for 2 kids and they are great! They do a lot of research and can give you a lot of information. They give you questionnaires for your child's teachers at school.

I know we also saw a Psychiatrist in the Sundance Center on Airport Freeway, however I don't remember his name. Sorry, hope this helps.
