Repairing electronics is nearly always more expensive than replacing them.
You can contact the company and ask about repairs. Or you could call a shop that repairs TVs and other electronics and ask if it's even possible to repair this.
What's your best advice on getting a PS3 repaired? My son's plays BluRays but not games. Dust removal efforts have changed nothing. It's his only game system and we can't afford to replace it. Thanks!

I can't speak to your specific problem, but a few years ago my kids Wii stopped working. I took it to a repair shop. The repair shop charged $50 just to look at it. It turned out it was going to cost me nearly the price of a new on to get it fixed, (the part that needed to be replaced cost nearly as much as the entire system) and if I didn't have the repair done I was still out the $50. I regret taking to have it looked at in the first place because if we had just bought the new Wii we would have gotten the extra contollers and game that came with the system. Sorry, based on that experience I would just save up for a new system. Unless you can figure out how to fix it yourself or you find someone who does it cheap...
Unless you have the extended warranty (I paid extra to have it for 4yrs) - I do not see any hope of it being an affoardable fix.
However I have a few troubleshooting suggestions for you. Your system must be connected to the internet for this to work and he must be willing to loose his saved game data.
Option 1: easiest - download latest version under System Update on the XMB menu
Option 2: complicated (ish) - reformat the system. I say complicated (ish) because if he has data he wants saved & you have the PSplus he can save some of it to the cloud; OR he can save it to an outside hard drive before the format.
Both of those are viable option a with a touch of research some systems were having issues playing games after an update, they did however release a patch. If your son's system is not always connected to the internet and not set up to autodownload these updates/patches then he could have easily missed it. Good Luck.
Ours stopped working about a year ago. Mt husband is pretty handy. He was going to order the part and fix it himself. The cost for the part and shipping was just a little less than buying a new one. So we ended up getting a new one.
I think when we looked into repairing ours through Playstation, they wanted $80 to look at it and we needed to pay for shipping in both directions. If he only watches BluRays, you can get a player for @ $50, maybe cheaper depending on where you go.
