T.B.
I love Larabars and my daughter likes the ones with choc. chips in them. A lot of the other bars add things to them like syrups that are just added sugar where these are just fruit and nuts.
My 5-year old son does not eat meat or drink milk. We try to get protein through cheese and cottage cheese. He won't eat beans either - he's very picky!! I was thinking the other day "What about protein bars?" I remember from my working days (over 7 years ago) there was a girl in my office who lived on protein bars and said she had found some that were really good. He would probably only eat chocolate and peanut butter ones. Does anybody have experience with protein bars and could recommend really good ones for him? Thanks in advance for your help.
Thank you everyone for so many wonderful ideas and suggestions. I'm sure (hopeful) I will find one he likes. I will make a list and see what's available at our stored in town. You all are the best moms!

Z Bars! You can buy these at Target. My son loves them, and has one before school each morning. He isn't big on meat , so the added protein each day helps.
We eat the Zone bars which are balanced. Thay have a peanut butter and a chocolate chip cookie dough that are awesome! My 4 year old eats them sometimes as well. The also make Z-Bars for kids that I buy my son that aren't bad and geared towards kids. There is a newer product out that is like a fruit and granola parfait that he might like too. Just by the other yogurts. It comes with granola on the top you can add in.
My son is almost 2 and won't touch anything protein-y except hummus (go figure, the kid won't touch a chick pea with a 10 foot pole, but he loves hummus)... Will he drink pediasure?
He's pretty young to eat a true protein bar. They usually have upwards of 15-25 grams of protein per bar. Maybe let him try some Zone bars. My kids like the chocolate ones (dark chocolate almond, double dark chocolate, cookies and cream, etc) and they typically have 12-14 grams of protein per bar.
Kashi products (any of them) typically have some protein in them also. More so than other brands of the same products (hot or dry cereal, granola bars, cereal bars, crackers, etc).
Have you let him try yogurt? Some of the greek yogurts are really good (and have a slightly different consistency than regular yogurt) and they come in chocolate, too. Look for Stoneyfield Farms. They have a chocolate one. :)
I don't know about protein bars and kids, but I love the luna nutrition bars! they have a really good chocolate peanut butter one but I can't rememeber what it is called at the moment. What about peanut butter itself. My son gets a lot his protien through that (he doesnt like meat either) will your son eat eggs? what about whole grains, alot of whole grains are actually a really good source of protien.
Luna bars are really yummy. Expensive, very chocolaty. I would still encourage him to eat other forms of protein though, so it won't be like a constant reward for his picky eating. other sources of protein, nuts, red beans with rice, whole grains, so peanut butter on whole wheat toast, broccoli, grilled cheese on whole wheat, mac and cheese, tuna salad on crackers, soy milk, tofu, yogurt, fish, eggs, hummus on a pita or crackers, avocado (makes some yummy guacamole)..
some good info here on how to balance protein, b/c not all protein sources are created equally;

You could try:
Larabars (they are nuts and fruit)
Kind Bars (same thing, nuts and fruit but REALLY good!)
Protein shakes (if he likes fruit smoothies add a little rice protein in, it's what I use for my son. The brand I use is Sun Warrior. Get the vanilla flavor.)
Shaklee makes some great ones in chocolate an peanut butter. They are also more healthful than the ones in the store. You can also return them for a refund if he doesn't like them.
Clif makes Builder bars and many others, but the Builders have alot of protein and to me, taste like a candy bar. Many do not and I have tried many. I love the chocolate mint.

I did quit buying them in protest tho as they are big supporters of the Sierra CLub and THEY use sneaky underhanded, yet legal ways to take away my rights to snowmobile in the mountains (and other peoples rights to do most anything in alot of these places....buying these products supports those causes, so I had to give them up...too bad too, cuz it took YEARS for me to find one I liked! And I LOVED this one...sad, but true)
I drink chocolate protein powder (one scoop) each morning mixed in my chocolate milk/white milk combo. Took me weeks to find a way to stomach THAT too...LOL. But its very do-able! (Whey protein)
I would go to a gnc and look that's how my son gets most of his protien. He likes these oatmeal cookies, and it's a saturday tradition for him and daddy after the gym they eat a protein cookie and have a gateraid. LoL
I have made my own Lara Bars in a food processor. Just grind up nuts and dried fruit to a thick paste (do the nuts 1st). Then mold it and chill in the fridge.
Tiger Milk bars were a favorite for my son. Also Odwalla Bars which you can buy from drugstore.com (I'm sure they sell a lot of the other bars mentioned below...in case they are hard to find in your local stores.
I really like the Target brand protein bars (Market Pantry....or something like that) - they have a very yummy peanut butter chocolate one. That's my breakfast almost every day and my kids love them too. I think they have 15 grams of protein per bar.
Special K has protein meal bars that I live on. I eat one every day for breakfast and it keeps me full until lunch. They also have shakes and water mixes that have both protein and fiber (although the water mixes seem to have sucralose and I avoid those fake sugars). My kids like them as candy bars, and that is what I think they taste like too. My favorite is the one below, second favorite is the Honey Almond and after that Strawberry.

hard boiled egg? Let him sprinkle salt on it? (the salt is half the fun for my 3.5 yr old).
deviled egg -- with pickles in it?
I love the "Zone" brand--available at walmart and target. A bit pricey, but worth it (I eat them in the car on my way to work). They make a chocolate/PB combo--as do most brands I've seen. I am also very partial to the chocolatge mint one--yum! Fudge Graham is also good. My kids (7 and 3) like them to and pediatrician okay'd them.
I know it's been a few days already, but I've found some really great gluten-free bar recipes online. I say "gluten-free" because they rely on nuts for a lot of the bulk of the bar. Therefore, they are naturally high in protein. If you just type in "gluten free bar recipe" in your favorite search engine, you should find some great recipes that you can make at home... which is WAY less expensive than purchasing them every day.
I like South Beach Diet Meal bars and Atkins Advantage Bars. They are really yummy (my 7yo agrees) and is a meal replacement (maybe try half at first). I eat one for breakfast close to everyday and never get tired of them. They are low carb (I don't suspect you are worried about that), at least 10g protein, but high in fiber (which is also another reason to start with half). Most importantly, they are GOOD!
Hope this helps.
I second the Z Bars. My son loves them and eats them for breakfast and snacks, too!
I LOVE Balance Bars. My favorite is Almond Brownie. I eat one every day! I don't know if kids would like them though. Worth a try!
