Prometrium Question

I am newly pregnant (5 weeks) and my doctor has put me on Prometrium due to light spotting (some was red). I took it for the first time last night and it made me very sleepy, which is fine, but today I'm having slight dizziness. Does this get better after your body gets used to it?

What can I do next?

This only made me dizzy if I took it in the morning. I would think that it would get better over time. Being newly pregnant, it is difficult to say what exactly is giving you the dizziness, so just hold on and keep positive.

Most medications have some type of side effect, however, they will sometimes subside within a few days to a few weeks depending on the meds. If you find this bothersome or if its causing great concern, I encourage you to contact the pharmacist and have any questions that you have regarding that medication written so that nothing of concern is forgotten. I wish you the very best with the upcoming arrival of your very precious gift! Bless you!

Hi there! I know what you are going through! I had the exact same problem! I could not take the prometrium during the day because I was so dizzy. I called my MD and he said that side effect is very normal. He switched me to a suppository form of the medicine and that did the trick. No more dizziness. I was more expensive, but I was glad I wasn't dizzy anymore!

I also took prometrium during my first pregnancy. I took it at night. I remember a little slight dizziness in the morning but it did get better. I also broke out into hives like the second week I was taking it but I continued to take it and took Benadryl for the hives per doctors orders. I took it about 12 weeks and I delivered a healthy baby boy. My second pregnancy the doctor told me I did not need it because my levels were okay and I miscarried during my 10th week. My third pregnany he told I did not need it and I had spotting during my 10th week but I did not miscarry and delivered a healthy baby girl. So, anyways it gets better. Just hang in there.

I took prometrium with my last pregnancy due to low progesterone, it made me sleepy and somewhat moody at times, but I don't recall any dizziness issues. It may just be the fact that early on in the first trimester it is common to have some hypotention (low blood pressures) and when there is sudden movement from getting up quickly or coming from a laying position to standing may cause some dizziness. Afterall you have altered blood flow to that uterus and growing baby! I would just try not to make sudden quick moves as it may make it more pronounced.
Congrats on your pregnancy and may you be blessed with an awesome gift from God!

is prometrium a progesterone medication? if so, here's my experience. i had 3 unexplanable miscarriages after having 2 healthy babies several years before. my doc put me on progesterone vaginal suppository for the 1st trimester when i conceived a 4th time. VERY expensive! i tried an oral progesterone med, but had the same symptoms you are having. i switched back to the suppository, symptoms subsided, had a successful pregnancy and now have a beautiful baby girl.

I don't know about the medicine, but I DO know (from 4 healthy pregnancies years ago) that peeing more often and sleepiness are the first noticeable symptoms of pregnancy. Part of your symptoms may simply be caused by natural hormonal fluctuations. I'm 50 and menopausal, now, and I use progesterone cream which helps MARVELOUSLY with hot flashes and mood swings. Look up your med on the 'net (search yahoo, google, etc) and see what all is said about it.

May you have a healthy, happy pregnancy and baby! I was a mom before I was 20, so mine are adults, now. You'll enjoy it! And be sure to keep the little one(s) in church!

I am not sure but what category does this fall under , hormone? Or it could be a relaxer of the muscle for uterus? Ask your Dr. to call you and explain the effects and if the ones you are having are ok.

Hi

I am 7 months pregnant and have been on prometrium since before I was pregnant. Prometrium is just natural progestrone and is very good for your body. I am also 40 yrs old. As we age we lose homones over time. Progesterone is important for the developing baby and support to the placenta. Since I have had a few miscarriges it was suggested to stay on it long term for extra precaution. I find peace in having the extra hormone as if you have too little the baby is at risk but there is no issue with having too much.

As for the side effects in me they dwindled to no effects as my body became used to it (1 months time). Everyone is diferent so I couldnt say how your body will react but might expect that as with many drugs as your body adapts I would expect for the side effects to diminish. However if they do not go away the progesterone is harmless and would feel much safer taking it and being a little uncomfortable than risking a miscarrige or damage to the developing baby.

Hope this helps you, if you would like to talk anytime let me know.
Kind Regards
T.

I was also on prometrium during my first trimester, and I had some of those symptoms as well. Mine did go away after a while, so hopefully yours will as well.

I see you are 40. I was 45 when I delivered my little girl. I spotted a little too but refused to take meds. I didn't work so I laid around with my feet up for most of the pregnancy and I was fine. I would tell my dr about your concerns and see if there is another alternative. I was told that sometimes the spotting can be normal and then sometimes it may be due to the baby trying to pull away from the uterine wall. Find out why he gave you the medicine first and then tell him how it made you feel and then see if there is any other alternative. Maybe he felt you were stressed and he gave you that because it will help you sleep and not worry. There could be a million reasons why. So ask LOTS and LOTS and LOTS of questions. Know everything they do and why. They don't mind answering.

Hi!
I'm almost 13 weeks pregnant and have been taking Prometrium since around 6 weeks. I was exhausted in general, so I'm not sure what was the Prometrium and what was just being being pregnant! I also got kind of dizzy off and on but it didn't seem to last very long - it is listed as a side effect though! If it doesn't go away I'd contact your doctor. I'm pretty sure there are other kinds of Progesterone you could take if Prometrium doesn't sit well with you! I don't know if they all cause dizziness.
Good luck!!
Wishing you a happy, healthy pregnancy!
M.
