Progesterone - Probably a Question Just for the Ladies

Hey All!

So, to give the back story. I started having irregular periods about 7 months ago. Some periods are as close as two weeks apart. My periods last a full week (WTH?!) so that means I bleed for a week, don't for a week, and then bleed for a week again. This is hell on my body and I think if the mood swings don't get better my family is going to start a prayer group just do deal with me. And don't even get me started on my Dunkin' Donuts problem every 2 to 3 weeks.

My doctor has recommended an endometrial ablation to eliminate or greatly diminish my periods. In order to get the referral, I had to have two biopsies done - one cervical and one endometrial. They were done without anesthesia and were "uncomfortable" to say the least.

I just got a call from my GYN today and she said that the results were "inconclusive" and they need me to wait until another part of my cycle to have the biopsies done AGAIN!! She explained to them that we can't guage when my cycle will be because my periods have become so irregular. So, now they want me to go on progesterone for three months and then do them again.

I am so frustrated. This is never going to end, I get to have these crappy biopsies all over again, but I have to wait three months. The only time I have ever been on progesterone was during the first trimester of pregnancy to prevent miscarriage and I have no idea what the side affects are otherwise.

Has anyone else had progesterone therapy for irregular periods and are there any side affects?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

No, Christine, I don't have a lot of faith in the doc. Medical care on a military base can be spotty sometimes and you don't really get to choose, you are assigned. They have one GYN Nurse Practitioner here and I have seen her twice, now.

How old are you? You may be experiencing premenopause. I got a book called "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Premenopause." It describes the many symptoms of estrogen dominance, which most women have. My nutritionist prescribed a natural progesterone cream, which helps with many symptoms.
Also, check out this website:

Similar concepts.
I think your period is happening every two weeks because you are not ovulating. The progesterone cream helps with that. I've had that happen a couple of times.
Best.

I was basically having serious menapause issues in my very early 30's. Everytime I had sex with my husband I would bleed because I was so dry. I had hot flashes, night sweats, etc. At 34, I knew something had to be done so I researched progesterone creams and it changed my life. Definitely take the advice of "Mom of Many" and L. S. Read the book "What you doctor may not tell you about premenapause." Educate yourself. There is so much you can do on your own and may keep you from having such serious surgery. Do not use any progesterone the doctor prescribes. Go to a natural store like Whole Foods or a regular store that sells some of the natural products and buy the progesterone cream suggested in Dr. Lee's book. If you check out Dr. Lee's website there is a little hormone balance test you can take that is very helpful. Anything with the doctors will treat just the symptoms; the cream helps give you balance to fix the cause and eliminate the symptoms. I am not saying that you may not need to see the doctor again (I am a military wife, too, so I know how that goes with not trusting your doctor) but at least try this alternate route for a little while. It can't hurt and will probably help a great deal.

Good luck and please keep us posted. Praying for your health!

Z.

Well, if you go on progesterone, I would recommend a bioidentical progesterone. Most likely your doctor has no idea of the difference between bioidentical and synthetic. They are NOT the same. Here is a link with some articles about using progesterone: http://www.oasisadvancedwellness.com/learning/natural-pro.... This is the type I use. It has helped me greatly. You can also call Dr. Lanphier on that site to get a consult with her. She is incredibly knowledgeable. A great book for you to consider reading is What your doctor may not tell you about premenopause by Dr. John Lee. It is packed with excellent information. He also recommends a particular progesterone cream, which you can get from vitacost. It's pretty affordable. I would not go with a non-bioidentical progesterone cream or a pill, etc. that your MD will probably prescribe. It's not the same thing.

I know we just PMd but I have to pipe in. I had the NovaSure uterine ablation three years ago and I work for a national lab and specialize in women's health testing. I don't see biopsies done prior to the ablation as standard of care, I didn't have biopsies done either. I also had the surgery done by my OB/GYN...no referral necessary. Since results came back "inconclusive", can they have another pathologist review the slides? I would ask. We do that all the time for smaller labs that don't have the experience we do.

Added: Forgot you were on a military base. Wish you were in Southern California...I have some amazing OB/GYN clients!!

Do you really have confidence in this doc? Good luck!

progesterone makes you very unlikely to have a period... off hand that is all I can think of. Depo Provera is a progesterone only birth control.

Hi, L.:
Did you have blood work on the levels of all your hormones?
If not, ask for one first before medication order.
Just a thought.
