Go to another Dr. you could be allergic to the copper!
That's why this is called "Practicing Medicine"
Find a Dr. that is willing to listen and give you alternative IUD...
i had the copper IUD put in August 2008, since then every so often i have really bad back pain to the point where i want to cry my eyes out. i just lay there and cant move cause i am in so much pain. when i do have the pain it is sometimes associated with a pressure in my chest so it hurts when i breathe. i really dont know what to do. i went to the doctor and all they told me was that it is not the IUD, that i needed to see another doctor. i am at the point where i want to have this thing removed. has anyone else experienced this???

I had a similar situation but I'm not sure if they were related. I had the IUD put in in Feburary of 2002. By Oct of 2002 I was having intense back pain and painful intercourse. My periods were incredibly heavy too. I went to my OB and he said it sounded like I had endometriosis. I had a loporoscopy and sure enough I did. I still had the back pain though (not as intense) and it turns out I also had a bulging disc in my lower back. So, I wonder if the pain from the IUD and the endometriosis caused me to contract my muscles in that area which cause my other problems. I got 2 cortizone shot in my back and have rarely experienced the pain again.
I don't know if your doc explained to you all of the side effects of having a copper IUD. The severity of your menstrual cramps it going to sky rocket. So if you typically had some back pain with your cycles the IUD is going to amplify it. As for the pain spreading to your chest it could be anxiety over the pain in your back. You hadn't mentioned if you take any ibuprofen or tylonol when it gets like this. But that would help. If you don't find any relief with appropriate doses of at home pain meds, then I would go and have it looked at. But it's your uterus and you can do with it what you want. If you want to IUD out, they can't really tell you no. I would also go for a second opinion if you don't get an answer you're comfortable with from the original doc.
My friend had the same pain and was told the same thing!!! Have it removed!
I goggled 'copper, IUD, pain' and found a few articles that discuss "a small percentage of women are allergic to copper...".
If it was me, I'd get that thing removed ASAP! Pain is your body's way of communicating that something is wrong. Extreme pain is your body shouting it.
chest and breathing problems are very serious symptoms, but the sympotomatolgy that you describe actually sounds more like an anxiety attack.
I have had my IUD for almost 2 years and i love it. I was worried about the cramping because i used to lay in bed in a ball and cry because they were so bad and i cramp in my back. Since i have had my IUD my cramps are hardly even there. If you went to your OB/GYN and he said that it was not the IUD and to see another doctor then thats what you should do. If your OB/GYN thought that it could be that i am sure that she/he would have it removed asap. It very well could be something else that has nothing to do with the IUD. I would recommend that before having it removed. My sister was having back pain and throwing up and went in to see her OB/GYN and he told her that it was not from the IUD to see her family doctor and she did, she had a kedney infection and did not know it.
Go see a different Dr. and have it taken out. At any rate, don't waste your time on Drs that shrug things off, because the IUD may or may not be the problem. They should at the very least take it out as a deductive reason. That of course would take their time and money. If the symptoms started after you had the IUD put in, it is probably the culprit. If you are allergic to the copper, it may take awhile to get that toxin out of your system. Check out 12/22, Mirena question...you might want to see some of the responses. if you think it is a problem, do you really need someone to tell you to go ahead and take it out? The IUD affects different women in different ways. Tell your doctor to take it out and try another alternative.
I do not have the IUD but I had this exact feeling when I was having a gall bladder attack. It felt like someone was sitting on my chest and I couldn't breath. The pain was so bad that I would even sometimes throw up. It would last from 30 min to an hour. I went to the doctor and they did an u/s and I ended up having to have my gall bladder removed. Anyway, this is just a thought. I hope everything turns out ok. If you need anything else just let me know.
