Have any of the mama's out there ever had PRK laser surgery instead of Lasik? I don't qualify as a candidate for Lasik due to a thin cornea and I'm wondering how has others experiences with this surgery turned out? Good or bad? Thanks in advance for your advice.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the input. I go in for surgery in January and my main concern is the healing time with a toddler running around and stairs. I've arranged to have my husband help the first couple days then I'm kinda on my own. I just pray all goes well and recovery is quick otherwise I better have a back-up plan! Thanx again!

I had Lasik done with great results. When it came to my husband's turn, he was only able to get Lasik done on one eye and the other eye needed PRK instead. (Long story, but anyway...) Here is his experience:
His Lasik eye healed and felt better quickly. His PRK eye had a longer recovery and hurt like crazy. And for months he complained about not being able to see clearly, which is important to his job. But it turned out that the PRK eye ended up with sharper vision than the Lasik eye, and now he figures it would have been better for him to just have had both done with PRK, though he did not like the recovery period at all. It's been nearly a year now and his eyesight has finally adjusted--the PRK eye still sees better than the Lasik eye, but combined, they see well.

Hi M.-
I had PRK in March 2007. I also have thin corneas so couldn't have Lasik. I didn't have any problems with the surgery or afterward. Healed fine. I think I may need to get a touch up on my left eye, but the surgeon did discuss the possibility of that with me prior to surgery. My left eye was a little worse than my right before surgery, and I have astigmatism in my left, so I think that may be the issue. But everything has been fine. No complaints. I would do it again. Good luck!

My mom or dad had it, I can't remember which (all for of us had one or the other my mom, dad brother and me! bad eye family!!!) I know we were all very happy with the end results of our surgeries! Niether of my parents ever complained and both are doing great, it was along time ago, around 1997 or so, so it is probably even more perfected now! I am sure you will be very happy after the procedure it was awesome to be able to see without glasses or contacts!!!

I had PRK in 2000 and am sooo glad I did! I wasn't a candidate for Lasik either. After the first eye was done I could instantly see better even though I wasn't suppose to be looking out of that eye, but who can help it? I was so excited to be able to read a stop sign and car license plates.

The surgeon, Dr. Mandel, 'shaved' each eye differently. The first eye I didn't have problems with, but during the procedure for the second eye I kept moving my eye to see since he was covering it to 'shorten' the eye. Everything turned out fine, though. My vision is still great (20/15). I do see halo's at night and in the movie theater when they put white lettering against a black screen, but that hasn't caused any problems.

The recovery was uncomfortable, but if you keep the drops handy, it's not that bad. It took about 2 weeks to see clearly. It's well worth it! I'm trying to get my husband to get it done, too. Good luck! And let me know if you have any more questions.

Hello, I had PRK done (not a candidate for Lasik either) when my daughter was about 10 months. The recovery time was longer than I expected (bright lights and focusing), but it was well worth it and I would do it again in a second! No pain, just slighty itchy, but the drops helped.
