Private Schools in the North Gwinett Area

Hi Moms. I have REALLY been thinking about putting my 8 year old son in a private school. He is an excellent student and has good behavior, but I want him to get the best education he can get. Alot of things come real easy to him, and I see him becoming lazy in the future. He usually finishes his homework in class (If he is assigned homework. They want the students to do most work in class to teach them to be independent, so he doesn't bring home homework too often). He loves school, but I want more for him. I make him read a book or something, because he wants to stare at TV all day if I let him. Furthermore, I saw a bunch of behavior problems in his class (way more than last year), and I noticed many parents pulling their children out of the school. What are good private schools in this area, can you get scholarships, and would this suit my son better?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you both for your gracious help with advice on private school. I am doing my homework on schools, and those two I have included in my search. We are applying right now, and hopefully and prayerfully we will make the right descision for my son. Again, thank you so much. It's good to know I am not the only person who has the same thing in mind for our children's education. :)

I taught for 12 years before I had my own child. I taught in both private and public schools, and in the NG cluster. From my experience, I feel that it is not private or public school that matters becuase there are pros and cons to both. What matters most is the quality of the individual classroom teacher and the willingness of the administration to work with the parents and their concerns. Based on my experience, I personally feel that paying private school tuition is a waste of money. It would be more worth your time to push for a quality classroom teacher or a different room for your child if there are problems in his current classroom. I have seen just as many problems and sometimes more in the private schools. I also feel that you have to be careful about the curriculum that may be used in private schools. Sometimes you can trade some behavior problems for lower quality eduaction in a private school- and you are paying for it. I am not by any means speaking of any particular school, just what I have learned from my experience in general. So, if you are looking for the best education, I would heavily consider the curriculum in the private schools you research. I have found that as a general rule, they are not as challenging as what you will find in the public school systems. On the other hand, if you can find a school with smaller class sizes and a high-quality curriculum, that might benifit your individual child. You just need to assess where his strengths and weaknesses are and then find what fits him best because every child is different. Having the opportunity to be an insider in both public and private, I can honestly tell you that it is really the same anywhere you go as far as what your child sees and learns from the other students.

Hi -
Wesleyan School is in Norcross, at the corner of Spalding and Peachtree Parkway. It is an excellent private school. It is also a Christian school, teaching Bible and having weekly chapel services beginning in kindergarten. The deadline for applications is Feb. 15 so if you are interested, you should move quickly! They have a website www.wesleyanschool.org.

Good luck!
N.

Greater Atlanta Christian is a great private school. A little pricey but excellent education all around. If you still want the private school education with the public school benefits I would suggest Buford City Schools. They are ranked one of the highest in the state.
