My husband is going to be laid off effective June 30th and I'm looking for information on affordable health insurance for our family of four in the event that he doesn't have a job by then. Do any of you have any recommendations?

What can I do next?

My husband is a teacher and unfortunately his insurance is awful. My girls and I have private insurance through Unicare. It's very affordable and they offer all types of plans to meet your needs. We have the plan with the $3000 deductible however office visits, RX, etc have $30 copays and are not subject to the deductible.
You can go to their website to get a quote, unicare.com

have you looked into carrying COBRA to extend your current policy up to 18 months?

I can tell you, first hand, to stay away from Mega Life and Health Insurance. They misrepresent what they offer and wind up being extremely difficult to deal with. Their premiums increase as much as $70.00 twice a year after you file a claim
and it continues each year after that. Even though the premiums increase, your health insurance is not updated and you are only covered for the medical costs of the year you take out the policy. My premiums climbed from under $200 a month (non-smoker, no health problems) to $901 a month (they said the increases were to cover the rising costs of healthcare)in 14 years, yet when I had emergency surgery and a 6 day stay in the hospital...they only paid $8800 towards a $56,000 claim. They claim they will only pay the prices used in 1994 when the policy was purchased. I had been told at the time of the purchase that it was a standard 80/20 policy. Now, here I am with a $47,000 hospital bill hanging over my head....but they still want $901 a month premiums, plus a $10 membership fee to NASE. My recent health problems prevent me from being covered by anyone else. I have another 5 years to qualify for medicare. So, I'm locked in or will have to do without. Buyer beware. There are lots of complaints about these people online.

I've heard that United Healthcare has the best plans. You can Google it and research it from there...

You should look into COBRA, it's required by Fed law that if he had insurance with the company, that they have to offer it to him when he's laid off. However, it may be too expensive. I think we had to pay almost $2k a month for the insurance.

There's also insurance for major medical/emergencies only. You'd have to pay cash for any doctor visits for the regular stuff but if you're child got appendicitis or you broke a leg, you'd be covered.

Good luck and hope he finds a job soon!

Hi J.,

First of all, let me say how sorry I am that your husband is being laid off. I know this must be a very scary time for your family. When I started my business, Errands A.S.A.P., I had to find private health insurance. Pam Malone of Malone and Associates worked hard to find me something affordable and I'm sure she'll work as hard for your family. Phone her at ###-###-#### or cell: ###-###-####

Good luck!
