My 3 yr old niece had the Prevnar 13 vaccination and the flu shot yesterday. Her daycare called to say she has a fever. While my sister is en route to pick her up, she's now developed a rash. She called her doctor and conveniently they are on a lunch break. Anyone have experience with this? She's planning to go to urgent care or the doctor, whichever one is available first. Thanks!

My son had this shot when he was an infant. He developed a fever as well and his leg swelled ridiculously like there was a softball under the injection site. The nure who administered the shot told me to give a cool compress and cool bath as well as tylenol. She took down the information to record to the VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System). His fever was gone within a day or two and the swelling in about 3-4 days. He didn't develop a rash however.
I hope your niece is felling better!

yes, my son had the same reaction. He had 2 doses and he is not able to finish it and have the 3rd. It's a bad reaction to it and since he had a bad reaction, he can not have it anymore. The one he had was the oral prevnar (not sure if that's the same as prevnar 13). Hope she feels better soon!

Yes it is common. The fever is because his immune system is kicking in and fighting the vaccines (that is what is suppose to happen). The rash may be caused by an allergic reaction (rare). But, it is probably just a natural reaction which can happen due to the fever. It doesn't hurt to go in to make sure it is not an allergic reaction.

My two and four year olds just had there Prevnar 13 shots and both fever and rash are common side effects. Neither of mine developed a fever or a rash but in the past they've both had an occasional fever after getting a shot. It passed by the next day and they were completely fine. I'm sure your sweet niece will be fine, too. I'm just sorry she has a fever and a rash ---- no fun for anyone especially three year olds.
