Preventing a UTI

Does drinking cranberry juice really help prevent a UTI? Or are there any other tricks? I had my very first UTI after my son was born via c/s (I think b/c of the catheder). I'm having a c/s on Wed. and I would really like to try to prevent getting one this time. It was so painful!!! I'm actually more nervous about getting a UTI afterwards than the actual surgery (weird, I know, but that's how bad it hurt). Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

Drink lots and lots of water. I used to have a UTI every few months until my doctor recommended drinking more water and I haven't had one in several years even after having a catheter with both my children's births.

ask your gynecologist what he can do to prevent that. I have heard that the longer a catheter is in, the more it is subject to causing this problem. I have had UTI's that weren't painful so I'm wondering why yours was so bad unless you didn't get an antibiotic to take in a timely way. Aside from the catheter causing the irritation, other recommendations I have had came from drinking enough water, remembering to wipe front to back (not back to front), changing out any pads frequently that are needed. But sounds like yours is as a direct result of the catheter so focus on that with your doctor and why it was so painful.

I swear by the cranberry supplements you can get by the vitamins in any health foods/whole foods store. I used to get UTI's all the time and while I don't take them everyday but def anytime we are intimate or if I start to get "that feeling" - and then I take lots for a day or two & it goes away!

When I was pregnant with my son, my nurse told me the %100 cranberry grape juice was the best to drink because there is also something in the grape juice that helps. It tastes good, so I would drink it like crazy and haven't had one in over 4 years. Congratulations on your upcoming addition!

My nurse said that absolutely, cranberries work. Juice, supplements, etc. Load up! Try to drink a ton, too. You'll need all the extra fluid.

That is all I drank at the hospital after my c-section. I don't know if it kept me from having one or not... It was really all I wanted to drink. I never had any issues.

I had three c-sections and the nurse told me about the cranberry juice. I drank it mixed with apple juice and loved it. I also downed a ton of water and did not have a UTI with any of them. Also, ask your husband to stock up the house with 100% cranberry juice and apple juice for you so you have it at home, keep drinking it for the first two weeks your back. Good luck to you with your delivery and you and your family will be in my prayers.

Hello B.,

Congratulations! Yes, cranberries will help and so will blue berries. Also, keep up /w your probiotics (acidophilus, etc) because that will help keep the unfriendly bacteria in check. drink lots of water and empty your bladder often. (well, w/ pregnancy that's a given... LOL!) God bless you and your new baby and your family!
