I agree with Diane -- any spa treatment! A night or a few nights away would be totally fabulous! If there is not time for that, perhaps a gift cert to a spa or massage therapist or a department store gift certificate for a new outfit!
So, being a work-from-home mom, I don't need much for myself and try not to buy frivolous things. However, I am about to turn 40 and my husband wants me to tell him what I want. I need to ideas of frivolous things (his request) that I might ask for on this ocassion.

I vote for a couple of days at Mohonk Mountain House and SPA. http://www.mohonk.com/ Expensive but WONDERFUL. I spent my girlfriend's birthday there with her. It was the most relaxed I've felt in years. My whole being says 'ahhhhhh' when I think of that place - and the food and location is amazing too. Happy Birthday!
How about a night out with hubby.. dinner, maybe dancing.. and then a room for the night. or... a spa day for you... massage, hair done, nails... feel really good.. and then dinner with hubby. or hubby watches the kids and you go out with the girls.. good luck.. have fun.
Happy Bday ! :-)
How about Birthstone jewlery of your whole family?
For this past Christmas, my hubby gave me a beautiful ring that had all of our birthstones in it. (mine, my hubby's and our Son's) (a semi eternity ring in white gold, that he had the jeweler alter to fit in the gems. So it's a simple ring like this....diamond, gem, diamond, gem, diamond, gem, diamond ! It's absolutely beautiful !!
And it's simple enough that I can wear it every day and even looks good in my sweats ! ) :-))
Very sentimental - our family on my finger !) With a few diamonds thrown in for fun ! LOL
OR how about a pendant with the family jewels that you can wear on a chain around your neck.
Enjoy your day !
A romantic weekend away together, without your sons! Complete with turn-down service, couples' massage, and lots of delicious food that somebody else cooks. (And somebody else cleans up!)
In addition, ask for a gift certificate from a maid service. (Molly Maids, etc.) Now that I'm a mom, nothing says "I love you" to me like having a break from bathrooms, floors, and ovens! :)
A. you definitely should ask for a spa day, massage, facial, mani/pedi, the whole works. You can also ask for jewelry ie a piece from David Yurman if you wear jewelry. I would go for the spa day!!! Let us know what you picked :o)
O.
Dear A.,
You have received great responses of what other women would like for their birthday. But what about YOU! Think about what you used to enjoy before you had kids. 40 is a great age to rediscover yourself and be who you really are. Frivolous or not, take the occasion to give yourself what you most love and enjoy so that you can do it again every once in a while (you don't have to wait for a big birthday to have a frivolous thing that fills your heart with joy!
Happy Birthday!
I'm throw in some completely different suggestions, from a WAHM perspective Since I work at home, I don't need nice clothes, and don't wear jewelry on a regular basis. In fact, I'm often in my jammies until noon. I asked my husband for really nice slippers for my birthday (Uggs) and I wear them all the time. Another idea (assuming you have a home office and are a coffee drinker) is a Keurig single cup coffe maker. I have one in my office and always have a supply of special coffees for it. (You can order them on line from amazon.) It makes me feel like I'm at a "real" office when I wander over to the "coffee center."
Happy Birthday A.!
I'm a stay at home first time mom. I know it's hard to think of things for yourself. Christmas was difficult for me. My sister got me last Christmas a gift certificate for a pedicure at walmart. It's $20 or $30 dollars. You sit is this chair that has the most amazing message. You feel really great and refreshed after. I'm not sure what you like to do. Maybe a new book. Something nice for your job at home. New chair or fancy pen. New comfy pajamas. I just love new pajamas. I'm very girly so these are the things I think of. Mothers day last year my husband got me a certificate to a hair salon. I was disappointed a little when I got it but I had a great time going out and getting my hair done. Something to make you feel refreshed and pretty. My birthday and stuff I say nothing to save money. Then I realized how much my husband and the kids enjoy doing something for me. Enjoy yourself!
Methinks... lingerie? Either a.) he'll be DELIGHTED to get it for you, or b.) he'll be totally embarrassed and you'll get a good story out of it.
My mom is sitting beside me, and she says a day at a spa.
This is one of the funnest mamasource posts ever!
Maid service for a little while. A cook or meal service for a little while. An Ipod with all your favorite music already downloaded on it. A gym membership or maybe a membership to a yoga center or some other class you enjoy. Art classes? I'm giving all the things I would like - sorry! Think about it - you must be able to come up with things - I know we all put ourselves last now, but look deep within to what makes you, you! Happy Birthday!
A Vacation w/ out the kids!! To anywhere you would like to go! Happy 40th!
Tell him you want to go away for a weekend..without the kids! You deserve some time away. Sometimes doing somethng different is better than having something different. Enjoy your birthday!
A. L
How about something that would give you a little bit of you time? - trip to the spa, night/weekend away with hubby or a good friend. A new spring/summer outfit from your favorite store. Do you have a home office? Is there anything you need that could make your day/week/job/responsibilities easier?
How about a magazine subscription (if there's one you really like), or some books (you can create a wishlist on amazon.com)? Or, if you're into learning or any type of craft, you could take a class through your local adult ed--they typically have short courses--everything from cooking to jewelry making, pottery, exercise class, etc., and many of the classes last just one or two evenings for a few hours each. Maybe a gift card to your local coffee shop?
I would say to just try to think of something you'd want right now if you had the extra cash and didn't have to worry about where else you *should* be spending the money. There must be something you want?
My husband just asked me the same question, and I asked for some mom jewelry--not sure if it's your thing, but here's the website...
I can't wait til my jewelry arrives!
Happy Birthday and have fun!
Happy Birthday, A..
I would ask for a spa day followed by a night out. My husband and I had front row seats for Rock of Ages for X-mas. If you like 80's music you will enjoy this show. Its moving to B-way in March. Then a nice dinner out after the show. Depending on how generous he's willing to be and your baby-sitter situation, maybe you can also wing a night in a nice hotel.
What ever you decide, happy birthday and have a great time.
R.
What about a weekend away??? And a new outfit for dinner :)
Hi A.,
I envy your inability to think of frivolous things to buy. I, sadly, have no such difficulty! :) Here are some of MY favorite gifts:
Expensive, awesome make-up from Sephora (stuff I would never buy for myself, but love to own)
A great, funky pair of shoes. I just got a pair of orange Privos for Hannukah...so comfy!
Gift certificate valid for some kind of over-the-top hair treatment...like getting it highlighted with three different colors (or shades).
A cool new "toy" for my scrapbooking hobby...like the Bamboo Fun tablet I got for my birthday.
I find all of these things (except for the gift cert.) on Amazon, and just make a big old wish list for my husband to choose from. He loves knowing that he's getting me something I really want, and I never have to pretend to be thrilled with a present. I always love them!
Happy Birthday!!!!
a day at a day spa?
Do you have a good digital camera that takes good quality pictures quickly and easily? It is sort of frivilous and sort of practical. Being a mom of 2 there are probably lots of opportunity for pictures to be taken and treasured. I had saved some money but was still short so for Christmas I used the money my family would have spent on me and bought the digital camera I have wantd for 3 years. I got a Canon SLR XTi. It is a bigger camera and I love it but I also want to start a busness with my camera. If your not that into picture taking you may want a simple point and shoot. Or is there a trip you want to take? Have your husband start a savings account with the moey he would spend for a really special trip.My family gets crazy with me because I have ask for sheets, lights, a new bathroom and stuff for the house. They always say what do I want. I want stuff for the house to make my life easier. After 10 years I got my bathroom remodel and let me tell you it is AWESOME!!! It took a lot of time, effort and money but was well worth the wait. Tell your husband that what seems frivoulous to him may be exactly what you want.!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! A.
Ask for a TRIP to the country where your ancestor's are from originally. I am turning 40 in October and plan on going to ITALY because I have never been there and I am half Italian and Half Irish, (come to think of it, I've never been to IRELAND either)!
A.,
Do an overnight at a hotel with a spa. My husband and I take a night for ourselves once in a while and it really helps us to reconnect. He really isn't into the spa thing but I am. Get yourself a facial, a massage, a pedicure, what ever is going to make you feel good. My hubby is just happy to sit by the pool and read the newspaper while I get relaxed. We usually go for dinner and just enjoy our time away. I know we always forget to take care of ourselves as mommies but let your husband do this for you and the only danger is you may get hooked lol!!! I am not sure where you live but I have been to the Hilton, in NJ and also the White Sands Hotel at the beach in NJ is also wonderful. They have a spa, a great restaurant and the beach is right across the street it is great. I am sure you can find one in your area. Happy Birthday!!
Happy Birthday !!!! jewlery is always good, gift certificate for a spa.. a night in the city (dinner and a play). cleaning service.. have a great bday!
definitely a spa day!
One word, diamonds.
To mark the occasion.
Get a day at the spa!!! A massage..pedicure/manicure... feel good!!!! You deserve it!!!
I'd like a subscription to People mag as a totally frivolous gift.
A.,
Ask for things that you can USE, but you wouldn't normally buy - a year's subscription to the museum (frivolous to my parents and hubby, but would be essential to me could I get my hands on it!)
- insulated lunchbox with coupons for lunch :)
- flowers - the frivolous OUTDOOR kind - rosebushes - wildflower seeds, anything you like for color (azaleas are gorgeous (if I have the right name) periwinkle blue!)
- a pedicure - most people don't go for one of these because your feet are stuffed in shoes all day, and slippers in the evening.
- spa treatment - nothing silly like chocolate baths, but a massage and skin treatment might make your day.
Some lovely things I would love to have if we won the lottery - I'll be celebrating a birthday this year (aren't we all?) and none of these things will ever be on the roadmap. Frivolous. I would probably cry if I did receive any of these things bc we have so many other things we NEED!
Good luck, and congratulations!

Hi A.
Just wanted to share my 40th birthday. Hope you enjoy it.
We were celebrating our 19th wedding anniversary, and my husband asked about my 40th birthday which was about 6 away.
I said I would just like to go to dinner quietly -- no kids. At the time, we had 2 and I was baby sitting 3 little ones who they wanted to place in our home as foster children but at that time it was day care.
About 3 months later I was at the OB/GYN for issues, and found out that although our boys were 17, and 13 I was pregnant with twins.
By the time my 40th birthday came around I was on complete bed rest and we had a quiet dinner at home.
Two months later I delivered 6'8", 5'11" twin girls after 19 weeks of complete bed rest. We celebrated our 20th anniversary feeding twins round the clock. What a blessing!! I could not have been happier to have healthy happy twin girls after raising my boys.
God bless you
K. SAHM married 38 years --- adult children 37, coach; 32, lawyer married with 6 month old; and twins 18 college students after homeschooling.
A., i would say a mini-vacation with your husband or with your favorite girlfriends! LOL :) I went on a 4 day/3 night cruise with hubby for my 10 yr anniversary in december - and that was my choice. And the best part is that it was probably the same price as going to a spa for a day! ($240pp) Norwegian Cruise line has some great deals leaving from Miami if you can do that- I highly recommend it!!
Good luck- and Happy 40th!!!!!!! :)
You sound like me...when I turned 40 my hubby arranged a weekend trip to a place that had a day spa. We took the kids and they played in the hotel pool, etc. while I was pampered (massage, manicure, pedicure). So it was the best of both worlds because they were with me and that's what I really wanted. We went on a hike one day (because I love hiking). We watched a movie in the hotel room (one kid turned out to be sick). I didn't have to cook!!!
Don't feel like you have to reply to this. Happy Birthday!
A spa day is perfect!!!!!!!!! The Elizabeth Arden Spa is really great and if you go online you might be able to get a coupon or a package deal. Also, a box of Godiva. Happy Birthday!!!!!!! Let us know what you get.
Just got back from celebrating a friend's 50th birthday on a cruise. It was not too expensive, and everything was taken care of. The food was excellent, the accommodations were good, the entertainment was great, and worth the extra $ to go horsback riding in the Mayan Ruins of Cosumel. Deals can be had!! Have a great birthday; I loved my 40th because all in my 30s I felt I had to act and look like I was in my 20s. In my 40s I felt I could finally be me!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Our favorites around here are a nice purse (Coach is great, and there are outlets in NY state) or Swarovski figurines. (Hubs decided after we got married that I needed a Swarovski collection...mostly because crystal will always impress me, and he never had to think too hard about what gifts I would be getting! ;-))
Happy Birthday!
I would ask for a vacation....
A giftcard for a day at the spa with him as the babysitter!
Personnaly, I would want the maid service, or maybe a professional organizer to tackle a few projects around the house that I can never get to.
I would highly recommend some "pampering" according to your own preference and style... Maybe a visit to a SPA - Depending on your financial situation you can choose anything from a 30 minute manicure, pedicure or massage to a one or two day event! You can also get a good massage with a less expensive massage therapist (some of them would even do it at your home, but since you are working from home I would suggest you go elsewhere!). Or a special hair cut/hair treatment?
Maybe a trip to visit an old friend or relative you haven't seen in a long time.
Perhaps arrange for someone to take care of your boys for the night so YOU TWO can have some special time together (maybe even go to the spa together?)
I wish you a Very Happy Birthday!
U.
Jewelry
Music CDs
Tix to a Broadway show
Happy Birthday!!
Happy Birthday A.! I know that a lot of people would suggest spa treatments, but honestly, those are not my thing. If it were me, I'd be asking for tickets to a Broadway show or a concert.
Enjoy whatever you pick and have a wonderful day!

How about a day of spa just for you, get y our hair, nails, feet etc and just relax from those very energetic boys lol, hope I have helped enjoy
Hi A.,
Maybe he could get you a day of pampering at a spa or something. Or, even just a professional massage. Or, what about taking you on a nice vacation somewhere?
Happy Birthday!
~A.
If I were you, I'd ask for a sitter to take the kids, and spend some good quality time w/your man! Maybe a short weekend trip, or stay home sans kids, go see a movie, have dinner, and take it home..to do what you please!! ;)
How about something really beautiful, but purely decorative for your home, like a hand-blown glass vase / bowl/ sculpture, or perhaps something like caviar or a night at a really fancy hotel (even if it's only a few miles from your house!) or, check out this website:
http://www.vocationvacations.com/
You can spend a day (or more??) being something you might have always wanted to be, or to try out, like being a dog trainer, or cattle rancher, or florist, or.... there are ALOT of choices.
Oh - or how about getting a hair and makeup artist come to your home (like you might have done for your wedding) and do you up really nice before you go out to a really nice dinner?
Happy 40th!
Hi A., You are lucky!! I would ask for a nice night out to dinner, and a gift card to be spent at your leisure without kids on your solo shopping expedition.....
and be nice to your hubby - he sounds like a gem!
