Preschooler with Strange Marks Under Eyes

Hi Mamas ~

Our 4 1/2 yr old has been having these strange red marks underneath her eyes for months. It started in the Summertime & we thought it was due to her using goggles when she swam or took a bath.
Well, it's now November & she's not had her goggles on for over a month.

It's clear to us that it's an allergy of some kind, so we :
1) limited, then cut off her dairy intake - no change
2) changed A/C filter - no change
3) dusting/washing sheets every week - no change
4) new hypoallergenic pillow - no change

It doesn't happen ALL of the time, but when weather changes or she's very tired, she wakes with these red marks.
They are to the point where it will scab up (putting neosporin on them) and then be gone in 2 days.

Last yr, when she was congested/snoring a LOT, we took her to an ENT who told us that she has a swollen adnoid pad & that she may need surgery to remove it --- but we have to wait until she's 5 yrs old because "most kids outgrow this by that age".

Currently, I've been giving her kids Claritin in the morning & sometime benadryl at night OR saline nose spray.

Just wondering if anyone has had this issue with their lil one as well?
FYI, daughter says it doesn't hurt at all (though it LOOKS TERRIBLE - like someone's been hitting/scratching her!)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok....took her to pediatrician who ordered urine & blood tests. Tested for food AND all other allergen issues.
Results : SHE'S FINE - no allergies whatsoever!
On the one hand, I'm grateful because allergies obviously can be a life long struggle.
But on the other hand ---- what IS wrong with my baby girl?!
She's been on medicated nose spray DAILY for the past 2 weeks and the marks have become a bit better, but that may just be coincidence, since these marks would go away on their own in the past.
Her snoring has COMPLETELY gone away though, so that's good.
Now I'm starting to think that maybe she's just over tired? Maybe the snoring is contributing to her lack of TRULY restful sleep, resulting in these marks ? She's not taken an afternoon nap since she turned 1, she goes to bed by 8pm & wakes (on her own) at 7:30am.
(sigh) I just don't know where to go from here : (

If you think it is an allergy, have her tested for a swath of common ones. Then you'll know if it's pollen or dust or trees or whatever.

Take her to an allergist. Many of the things suggested could be the cause or it sounds to me like allergic/sinus issues which can cause the eyes to be puffy and red. A doctor needs to check it out. I'd be so careful putting neosporin around the eyes.

My daughter has really dry red skin under her eyes and it started during the summer and we thought it was her swim googles too. We realize it was allergies and keep her constantly on Zyrtec (worked better for us than Claritin) and the Dr. suggested we put a little bit of hydrocortisone at night. It seems to work and we also apply aquaphor in the morning. Good luck!

It sounds like allergies. You should have her tested. My cousin experienced the same thing and through allergy testing they found out he is allergic to fish. He can not be in an area where fish is being cooked or eaten. Good luck

Would you consider more effective supplementation (food, not drugs) to get at the cause rather than just treating the symptom? It's very likely that there's just more that needs to go on internally - remember that the skin is her largest organ. I work with a lot of kids with skin issues - allergies, eczema, you name it. You'd be astounded at what can be done simply. It's so much easier than taking everything out of her diet!

Our pediatrician said that red marks or dark circles can be indicative of allergies. Over the counter stuff does very little for our son, but Nasonex has been a life saver.

The area surrounding my eyes can get very dry and cracked during the fall and winter too. I use an eye cream when it's not too bad and a prescription steroid cream when it is.

I would consult with her pediatrician. You have to be so careful about what you put around the eyes, both because of the risk of it getting in her eyes and because the skin there is thinner and more sensitive than in the rest of the face.

Took my dd2 to the doc. Doc prescribed an allergy med. She had no symptons of an allergy so I asked the doc how she knew DD2 had an allergy. She said it was because of the red circles under my daughters eyes. Her eyes have never scabbed up or anything like that. If they did, I would ask a doc about it.

I suggest that you take her to a pediatric allergist for help in determining if she has allergies and to what. My granddaughter has dark circles under her eyes and the allergist said that this is common in people with allergies. I've not seen red marks. I wonder if she's rubbing or scratching at her eyes because they itch. Both my granddaughter and I have itchy eyes as the result of allergies.
