Prepping for a Colonoscopy Right Now!

I have a colonoscopy this afternoon and am currently prepping for it right now with HalfLytly. Sick to my stomach and I have to keep chugging the abysmal liquid. I'm home by myself for this part of it--husband at work to get some hours in today, kids at daycare. I haven't eaten in two days because they moved my procedure later, with no liquid (other than the junk they gave me) in the last twelve hours, plus I'm nursing our baby exclusively. I'm WIPED OUT--been light-headed and ravenous for the last 36 hours. I will need to pump and dump for the next 24 hours after the procedure.

So, please, if anyone can offer me some words of encouragement, I would sure appreciate it. Has anyone else been through this while nursing? Thank you....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I made it through! Thank you to everyone who responded and sent me positive vibes! The colonoscopy itself was fine and showed that I have colonitis due to a bacteria called C.diff. Now--the bad part--the medicine to treat the infection does not allow me to breastfeed. I'm not sure how to handle that part. Two weeks of pumping and dumping while my poor baby cries for the breast (or forgets about it???). I'm not ready to give up the BFing--she's only seven months! Wish me luck....

I have not been through it but have seen my dad and hubby (who has had many) go through them. Obviously neither of them were breastfeeding so I can only imagine how much more wiped out you are then they were.

After the colonoscopy they do say introduce foods slowly... well my dad did not do that (he ate a bacon cheeseburger about 30 mins after the colonoscopy, he was very hungry) and he was fine, happy & full. Both hubby & dad were fast asleep an hour after it and were sleepy till the next day, so have help with the kid(s) because it will help you recover quicker. Within 24 hours they were back to themselves but only because they took it easy for the first 24 hours after.

You are a strong women you will do great and make sure you have someone to help you at home that will make your recover time quicker. As soon as it is done find out what you can eat and eat it if you can stomach it. You will have food again soon!

You are getting through the worst part right now. I had a colonoscopy right after I had my son, but was no longer breastfeeding. Drinking the thick salt water like substance is the worst part. If you havent been eating it shouldnt take much to get everything out of you.
I would definatley ask for something for the nausea when you get to the dr's. The procedure itself is pretty quick. Good luck to you, it does get better. I hope everything goes ok.

Hi S.
Hang in there this is the worst part of the whole thing. When you get to the hospital ask them for something for the nausua, that will help a ton. Good luck T.

S., the worst part of the whole deal is the prep. Try holding your nose when you drink it. Also, I could have clear fluids during the prep. I found a gulp of sparkling water after the prep stuff while I was still holding my nose helped a lot! The other thing the nurse told me to try was licking a lifesaver after each drink. Take the TV or a good book into the bathroom with you to distract you. Hang in there! The colonoscopy itself is a piece of cake. Good luck! Liz

Hi S.,

I have had one myself too and like the other reader said, drinking the liquid is the worst part. I found it helpful if the liquid was very cold. My doctor said to keep it cold too...that way you can't taste it as much.

I can't remember if I was allowed to drink clear liquids or not but I thought I was. If you can drink clear liquids I would drink sprite or some sugar water to help with the dizziness. Your blood sugar is probably low from not eating and that can cause nausea too. Call your doc and see what they suggest. You don't want to get so dizzy you pass out. The pumping isn't probably helping either in terms of lack of energy. I really feel for you. Can't imagine doing that while also pumping. You'll probably lose 5-10 lbs though:)

good luck.
