Hi J., I too had one of my five kis who got REALLY bad diaper rash and the only thing that would work for him is what we called "pink powder" it is the medicated Caldesen (sp) powder. I think you can find it at the drug store or ask the pharmasist (sp). Nothing else worked for him and he got to the point where he would bleed from the rash but once we started using this I was able to keep it somewhat controlled. Hope it helps.

Corn starch works too! Make sure he's clean and dry before applying the corn starch. I used Kingsford (yellow box). Doesn't cost near as much as Prep H.

Never tried Prep H for diaper rash - Boudreaux's Butt Paste always worked for us.

If it's a yeast infection you can actually use a thin layer of Vagisil or like product (Lotramin) and then a heavy layer of diaper cream over the top. The Dr. always told me that if you can't see any diaper cream when you go to change the next diaper, you are not applying enough. One of my son's had a horrible rash one time that would not go away, it was awful. The Dr. actually told me to make a solution, half Mylanta and half A&D ointment (The original one, not the cream) you have to mix it really well because it will be a little watery but will eventually mix together. The Mylanta cuts the acid that is burning the bottom while the A&D protects the skin. I think my son's rash was gone within 2-3 days after using that solution! Good luck!!

I have not read the other posts yet but I always used Corn starch with my babies. If the rash is really bad and baby is uncomfortable, I would call and talk to your pharmacist or any pharmacist who is on duty tonight. They helped me many time many mine kids were young. Hope everyone rests well tonight.

Never used Preperation H. I'm pretty sure that is a pain reliever, NOT actually a cure for anything, although it does reduce inflammation, so if it's just a regular mild rash, it might calm it down enough to help it disappear.

Sever diaper rash is often a fungal/yeast infection, so using an antifungal cream like Lotramin (athelete's foot) or Monistat (vaginal yeast) can help. To me it sounds like using Preperation H is a lost in translation version of using Monistat.

Preparation H is mostly an anesthetic in a cream. It would work but it has no medicine in it to heal the rash. It has a chemical in it. I would check with the pharmacist before using it.
