Prenatal Vitamins - Brand Recommendations?

I had a very difficult time keeping down the giant-sized prenatal vitamins with my first pregnancy. My doctor insisted that taking a childrens vitamin and supplementing with a folic acid tablet was sufficient. I am planning my second pregnancy now and have doubts that the doctor's recommendation was the best option. Since the quality of the vitamin makes a difference in how much of it is absorbed into the body, I am looking for a recommend brand. Doesn't matter if they are still giant pills, I can cut them down. Thanks!

What can I do next?

With my first pregnancy I really liked the Trader Joe brand of PreNatal. This time around I bought the Kaiser brand and am looking forward to the bottle emptying so I can switch back to Trader Joe's. I didn't have any trouble digesting it and it did not taste horrible on the tongue like some of the ones I tried before it. I have compared the label to a few others and think the TJ one is best. Good luck and congrats!

New Chapter Pre-Natal Vitamins. These are expensive, but 100% worth it. Look them up on the web, they are very highly rated. I used to use Nature Made vitamins (purchased from Costco) I caught every cold and flu that passed my way. When I switched, I have had no problems. Hope this helps. Also another hint take vitamins at bed time, and you usually don't get sick.

Good Luck

rainbow light has a good quality prenatal that you only have to take one of each day. the pills are not too big. i was able to take these even when i wasn't feeling too great in by first trimester.

I had the exact same problem with prenatal vitamins. I was told that the stomach upset was from the iron. I switched to a double dose of regular vitamins (I think I used one-a-day, it was a while ago) and a liquid iron supplement that mixed in with juice and was much easier on the tummy. They didn't tell me to add folic acid, but I may have been far enough along in my pregnancy that it wouldn't have mattered. Good luck.

Hi J.,
I took Metagenics "Wellness Essentials for Pregnancy" through my pregnancy and also through my nursing months. There are multiple pills in a packet and I divided them up and took them twice a day so I didn't feel nauseated. They are excellent quality and include fish oil, Choline, and DHA for a baby brain-development boost. They're pricey, but I really think you get what you pay for with vitamins.
Here's the metagenics site so you can figure out where to buy them. I purchased them through my acupuncturist's office.

Good luck with your second pregnancy!

I used the Kaiser ones too and you can buy them at their pharmacy even if you are not a member. Do not cut them because I almost choked on a cut one and really regret it. My throat hurt for weeks. It is better to take it whole. You will get used to it eventually but your hair is softer, no breakage etc. they are great!

I'm sorry I can't remember the brand, but my doc gave me a chewable vitamin that didn't make me sick, like the horse pills she originally prescribed. They didn't taste bad, stayed down, and didn't make me feel sick.

Ask for the chewable or ask the pharmacist.

The only ones I could hold down were the Kaiser brand. You can buy them in the Kaiser hospital pharmacy.

Hi J.,

How long were you into your pregnancy when you started taking the prenatal vitamins? Did you doc let you know to NEVER, NEVER take them on an empty stomach? Did you ever take them on an empty stomach? I did...and yes...lived to regret it.

If you have doubts about what your doc recommends....I would consider changing docs. In my case, mine knew what he was talking about and I was the new kid on the "pregnancy block"! In the end I had a healthy 8 pounder and I'm glad I stayed with my doctor.

I can't remember the brand, but they were baby pink and blue capsules ,and smelled like serious vitamins.

If your worried about the vitamins absorbing, then you should take chewable or liquid vitamins. I took flinstones complete and have a very healthy baby. I like the complete because it has a lot of minerals that help your body absorb the vitamins too.

Hi J.,

I like the Stuart brand or the Long Drugs/Target generic brand. It has been working fine with me. I like it because it's easier to swallow. The other ones I've tried had more vitamins, but I couldn't swallow it since it's like a horse pill. Don't forget to take it with food.
