Prenatal Vitamin Recall

Does anyone have information about the prenatal vitamin with DHA recall. The only info I can find on the FDA site is that good manufacturing practices were not used. They are saying it is voluntary and at the wholesale level. My doctors office says not to worry about it but I am concerned.

What can I do next?

I took ones from a different company that were also recalled.

It's interesting to me that it spans more than one company. My doctor also said not to worry and directed me to simply buy a generic pre-natal. I've been taking Target's pre-natal with Expectra DHA supplement. It's certainly cheaper.

With all three of my pregnancies I used Melaleuca's prenatal pack. It was not my first vitamin. But when my husband and I found out we were pregnant we were so excicted and about 12weeks along the doctor told me with all the complications I was having I was going to loose my baby. I couldn't let that happen so I went home expecting not to be expecting and decided to fight for my babies life. I went online to find the very best for me and the baby..... to learn more www.melaleuca.com/prenatal
I had a 9lb 2oz baby boy.

Best wishes,

R.,

There is a simple test you can do at home to test the viability of any vitamin. Take one cup of distilled vinegar (it has the same acidity as stomach acid) leave the vitamin in there for 30-min. If it completely dissolves, then it is being absorbed in our bodies, if not...then get a different one. I had a friend who did this to her "prescription" prenatal and it broke in half, that was it. Your best bet is to go with a food-based vitamin such as Rainbow Light Prenatal One or New Chapter Prenatal. It is made with REAL food, so your body likes it! Most prenatal vitamins with DHA haven't even been tested yet because it is so new and the importance of DHA for the developing brain of the fetus (b/c of the research, many companies are jumping on the bandwagon etc)...so you can purchase a separate high quality fish oil such as Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega + Vitamin D3, they are clean and one of the top three fish oils out there. If you are burping fish oils, that means it is rancid. All of the supplements mentioned above have been tested by quality third party testers, called Consumer Lab. You can buy the mentioned vitamins at www.vitacost.com much cheaper than in the stores.

Good Luck!

I was taking Natalcare Three, which is on the list, from a few months before being pregnant, up to about 16 weeks pregnant (I'm 25 weeks now). I had no idea about the recall, and all of a sudden when I needed to fill my prescription, my pharmacy told me "the manufacturer decided not to make them anymore." I even asked if there was a safety problem with them and they said no. I was switched to Elite prenatal. My doctor never said anything about a recall either, and they had to ok the change in brand. Only later did I find out about the recall. Needless to say I'm a little worried about the vitamins I did take, and what the real story is on this issue. I am also only able to find out that they were stopped being manufactured because of subpar manufacturing procedures, whatever the heck that means. And that the only issue was that some of the pills produced were larger than they were supposed to be, also that no adverse health effects had yet been reported. But what the hell do we know - they just recalled them a month or so ago and we're still pregnant! Frustrating. Anyway, nothing I can do about it, so I'll just believe everything is ok. Please let me know if anyone finds out anything else.

I had an experience similar to what others are posting. I took a prenatal (that I really liked) all throughout pregnancy and the first couple months after (since I'm nursing). I went to refill it once, and they told me I could no longer get it due to the recall. I'm now on a prescribed one called Prenatal Plus which is working out fine, and it's inexpensive through my insurance. But I never got any info regarding the reason for the recall!

Actually i took some samples of prenatals with dha that my obgyn gave me and then at my next apt when i asked for a prescription of them she said they were recalled. I was instantly worried and my doctor said i had nothing to worry about but also gave me no explanation why they had been recalled. Sorry i couldn't be more help. I'm interested to see if you get any other explanations. Good luck.

Hi R.,
I have heard of a couple of different recalls recently. Its a scary thing when we get concerned about something that sounds like it might not be something that we want to take and our doctor tells us not to worry.

The FDA does not regulate vitamins. You and I can make our own vitamins (or put a bunch of tic tacks in a bottle), slap a label on it and sell it if we wanted to. There is no way to tell that what is on the label is actually in the "pill."

I found a vitamin company that has science and research behind it. They guarantee that what is on the label is really in the bottle. There are thousands of tests on their raw materials before even being used. The company is Shaklee. There is a 100% money back guarantee too!

When I was pregnant with my first son, my midwife asked if I needed a prescription for prenatals and when I told her that I was taking Shaklee, she told me I was taking the best thing out there.

I would love to be able to share some information with you to show you how Shaklee is different.

A lot of vitamins go through your system without even disolving (LOTS of prenatals!).

The manufacturer website has a link to the consent decree with the FDA that gives a little more info, but you would probably need to do some additional research to find out more specific info about what the standards of the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act are that they are accused of violating.

R., I never liked prescription vitamins. So I looked up online for some. I found the ones from Meleleuca and I have to tell they made such a difference in my life. With this company I never had to worry about being recalled or not since it has such good credits with Better BUsiness Bureau.

I didn't hear anything about this until I saw your post. My baby is now 9 months old and I had to take one of these listed vitamins at the end of my pregnancy. Everyone seems fine - but this is scary.
