Pregnant with Backache

I am almost 6 weeks pregnant and for the past week, my back has been killing me! I feel like I've been hit by a car, it's so sore. I've had a bad back for a few years now and it got bad a year ago when my son turned one (he's two now). I had to go to the chiropractor back in the summer to help with the pain. Since then, before I got pregnant, I was able to manage the pain with the massage chair and ibupfrofen. I can't do ibupfrofen now and I tried the chair once and it didn't help much (plus I hear conflicting things about massage chairs and pregnancy so I'm not sure if I should use). I know that lower backpain is one of the symptoms in early pregnancy so I'm not sure if this is it or my back is back to 'breaking' again (I feel like I might snap in half). Has anyone dealt with this before? I really hope the pain subsides because I don't think I can tolerate it getting worse as I get bigger.

What can I do next?

I had back pain with both my pregnancies, and I found a chiropractor who specialized in pregnancy, and also a massage therapist who specialized in pregnancy. Both helped!

Aches & pains are very common during pregnancy, especially if it's your first & everything is stretching & moving around for the first time.
I saw my chiropractor very regularly (every 2-4 wks) during my pregnancies & that really helped to keep me comfortable.

I can't imagine why a massage chair would be harmful during pregnancy. You can also use rice packs (which are very easy to make) either warm or cold, depending on what feels best.

Congratulations!

If it is that bad ask the doctor. I would make sure it is not kidney stones. Those are painful. See if the pain is where your kidneys are in the back. It does not seem like you back should hurt that bad in early pregnancy.I know you said you had a bad back. See if you can go to the chiropractor. Make sure to get exercise like walking and swimming which will help strengthen back muscles. You can only take tylenol because you want to be safe when it comes to the baby. I know it is not fun but the end result is worth it.

Yep....I had this....I have a bad back (mild scolosis). It was HORRIBLE during my 2nd Pregnancy...not so much during my first (probably cuz I wasn't lifting another baby durning my 1st pregnancy).
My recommendation is icing your back, and using icy hot patches. Ask you dr first about the ice hot patchs to make sure that they are ok for pregnancy. I mostly used ice packs for my back. Be careful thought.,.....I iced my back SO MUCH I got frost bite on my back....

Try the chiropractor again! Helped me tremendously through both pregnancies, and pregnancy massage too.

I am not a doctor but yoga and regular massages have helped me. Also I heard that N.U.C.C.A chiropractors (http://www.nucca.org/) can be helpful. They are not your regular chiropractor cracking your skeleton. There are other methods for the back which involves breathing that have helped some of my friends to. Look for alternative options.
Hope you will feel well soon!

I work for a chiropractor, and couldn't have lived without her during my pregnancy - what a help! It is worth a try - until you can see someone put an ice pack on for about 10-15 minutes a number of times a day - it will help inflammation, but also numbs the area to bring you a little relief. Good luck - I hope you feel better soon.

Hi T.,

I'm sorry to hear about this pain. I had lower back surgery a number of years ago and have since struggled with bouts of pain. I was very scared during my pregnancy about possible flare-ups of pain. I started prenatal yoga at 9 weeks pregnant and I really credit it with helping me through the pregnancy. It made me get stronger and more limber as I was getting bigger. As I grew, my muscles were getting a gentle, yet solid, workout to keep up. More importantly, it helped get and keep my core muscles strong, which kept pressure off my lower back. When you get past this immediate pain (I concur with the ice/heat recommendations, too), I highly recommend some prenatal yoga to help you sustain the core and leg strength you have. best of luck.
