Pregnant, Lots of Labor-like Nonsense, Feeling exasperated...anyone Else?

I am 35 weeks pregnant and having a TON of contractions. I've been having contractions for weeks at regular intervals (between 2 and 4 minutes apart). I was sent from my doctors office to L&D by wheelchair to stop them at around 32 weeks. And it worked for about 72 hours. They're mostly painless but my doctor states they are contractions and not just braxton hicks consistent in time and strength and whatever.

In the past two days they've doubled in intensity for me, but slowed down in terms of time. I was up all night the other night in a lot of discomfort feeling bowel urges with every contraction despite going to the bathroom several times. Nothing changed them (lying down, walking around, shower...) Night is the worst time for me they seem to pick up in frequency (or I notice them most?) and so when they were still sticking around after midmorning I called the doctor. I was SURE I was in labor because I vowed to not go back to L&D unless I was coming out with a baby.

Then, when I got there I admit I kind of panicked about everything and I freaked out. I was jittery (I don't like hospitals or IVs or anything) and when they hooked me up to the monitors things had slowed down quite a bit. They'd gone from 2 minutes apart and lasting about a minute when we were in the car to 4 minutes apart and lasting about 30 seconds. I was only 1cm dilated, and they said "Go home, come back when you're in labor."

Well, I was ok with that to be honest I'm not disappointed about not having him yet because I've gone to great lengths to keep him in and get as close to full term as possible. What I *am* feeling frustrated by is the fact that although the contractions haven't returned to the same level but I'm really crampy with low back pain and I feel nauseated and also kind of sick/anxious and oddly my breasts hurt...as do my stomach muscles (like I've done a bunch of crunches).

I KNOW that I will eventually have a baby so I'm not even worried about that...but I am very uncomfortable and can't IMAGINE going 5 more weeks like this or even 2 or 3 more weeks. I'm tired, I'm not sleeping well...and I just feel like I'm draining all the reserves I will need for ACTUAL labor.

Has anyone had experience with this?

The doctor says they won't stop me from going into labor at this point but they won't help me either. At 37 completed weeks they will give me something to augment labor if I need it, but I'm looking at that being too far in the future.

What can I do next?

I went through this with my 3rd pregnancy. It's miserable and there is nothing you can do about it. That's the hardest/most frustrating part.

I was lucky that I was able to lay down on my side A LOT! My mom was wonderful and took my older kids, and it was summer so they weren't in school. I don't know what I would have done without her.

All I can say is hang in there, stay hydrated. I was told that being hydrated was a major cause of early contractions. So drinks tons of water and try to lay down as much as you possibly can. This too shall pass!

I was thinking about you this morning, thanks for the update! Glad you're still pregnant.

My preterm labor did not in any way resemble my other two full term labors. Felt like a UTI, a back injury, etc, just like you say. If you start throwing up tonight, please call the docs again, k?

Of course you want to be as close to full term as possible, but 35 weeks is WAY better then 30 weeks, nearly out of the woods. So drink a lot of water, put your feet up, try not to do too much.

Keep us posted!

:)

Your kind of labor I don't believe is common. When my sister was pregnant with her first nearly 3 years ago, as her big sister with 3 kiddos of my own at the time, I told my sister all about MY labors so she would be prepared for what to expect. What I wasn't prepared for was the kind of labor you just described. My sister complained of low back pain for WEEKS before the baby actual was born. She was crampy just like you described. Her "contractions" were constant, always felt like she was in a constant contraction, never really giving up. Some days for her were worse, especially when she was working. How she knew when she was in real labor was when her contractions were coming at regular intervals for several hours and also, her water was leaking but she lost her plug weeks before. It's a strange type of labor, I know from what my sister went through but you'll get there. just hang on. Won't be much longer and good luck.

if every time you go the hospital they give you drugs to stop labor, then tell you go home when you are actually in labor,, only to send you home once again after drugging you to stop labor..again, then its time to re think this.. do you REALLY want to continue being DRUGGED, knowing it COULD very well affect your baby ?? not that your doctor is going to give you THAT piece of information. think it over, and contact an experienced midwife, and see what they say

I totally know what you mean :(. I tend to be sooo exhausted by the time I actually give birth...because I've spent forever in pre-labor-labor. I'm going to check back occasionally and see what kind of answers you get...I'm sure I'll be in the same boat again in about 13 weeks or so. With my second, I dilated to a 4 and totally stalled for a month...constant contractions...I'd go in...they'd keep me for awhile because the contractions were real/strong/regular/etc....then they'd start to slow down a bit...and they'd send me home...I spent 4 nights (not consecutive) in the hospital before actually coming out with a baby! The hardest part was lack of sleep because the contractions were worse/more frequent at night. This pregnancy I've been listening to this hypnobirthing thing someone sent me...and that helps me to fall asleep when my hips and back feel like they're on fire...I don't know if that would help you relax and fall asleep? I'll post the link...take it for what it's worth :). It's pretty soothing if nothing else! Good luck!!

Wow, I can't beleive that the doc has not suggested anything to help you with your discomfort. When I was uncomfortable like that with my second child the doc Rx my sleeping pills I was so uncomfortable and not sleeping I was exhausted! The doctor told me to walk and when i did the contractions would stop! So, I was uncomfortable for weeks before I delivered but I was able to finally sleep when they gave me the pills.

I feel for you!!! I was in what I call "pre-labor-labor" for a month. My son was 2 weeks late, I started contracting regularly around 37.5 weeks. Not Braxton-Hicks. I think those are a myth...lol... I also lost bits of my mucous plug (ick, tmi, sorry) for about 2 weeks. Those two weeks post-date were the longest of my life! Just do whatever you can to make yourself feel the tiniest bit better- buy a really nice lotion, read a trashy book, eat ice cream, anything you want is totally justifiable to get you through the wait. Hang in there, you will make it!!!

Wow! I'm so sorry to hear about this - you must be totally exhausted.

I don't have personal experience with this, but I do know that for some women, getting in a warm bath slowed labor dramatically. Is this an option for you?
