Hi all, so on Tuesday my Sister In Law had a urine test come back positive saying she was pregnant; however, today she got a call from the nurse saying that her blood test came back showing negative and that she wasn't pregnant. But a few hours later the doctor called back saying that the nurse shouldn't have called her and my SIL's levels were a 26 so they wanted to do another test. I have no clue what a level 26 means and was wondering if anyone knows...Apparently she took a few at home tests and they all came back positive but I know they could be positive if she had miscarried or something. Any who, what do ya'll think?

What can I do next?

Hello, I also had false/positive tests with my blood tests when I thought I was pregnant. My daughter was 6 months old and I was quite freaked out. I wasn't quite ready yet. For a week I had finally come to terms with being pregnant again so soon, then I started spotting and I called the doctor. It was the protocol, sit down, feet elevated, no heavy lifting, if the bleeding or cramping gets worse call them back. The next day I received a call that I was not pregnant and that it was probably my menstrual cycle starting, a month late. So false/positive test results can happen quite often, but I don't know what the level means.
Hope this helps!

I had this before (called a Chemical Pregnancy). It is where an egg becomes fertilized and for whatever reason implantation and normal pregnancy doe snot occur. It is usually very very early in your cycle and quite a few women will have this and never know if they never get symptoms or take a test.

I had symptoms so I tested and it was positive numerous times but my blood test showed that the HcG levels were super low (10-20) which they told me meant I may have been pregnant but was not any more. If you are actually pregnant the HcG levels multiply very rapidly (by the 100's) every day once fertilization occurs to maintain the pregnancy.

If she is concerned have her visit her dotor. They can run blood tests for hormones and thyroid to make sure that was not the cause of not being able to sustain the fertilized egg. I found out I had Hashimoto's Thyroiditis (hypothyroid) after this happened to me. My thyroid was putting out ZERO trigger hormones to keep my cycle regular so pregnancy was not possible until I went on synthetic thyroid hormones.

Hopefully your friend will get some answers. I was on Thyrolar for 1 month (after 6 months of trying with nothing) and I conceived my son (now 8 months old). I will keep my fingers crossed for her!

The numbers are how they know if someone is pregnant or not, and they will test again to make sure that the numbers double appropriately. When my home test came back positive, I went for the blood test and was told that it might not be viable because the numbers were so low. I went for a second and they doubled, but still it was low. I had a baby girl 9 months later. Tell her not to get her hopes up, but a pregnancy is still possible. It may be a chemical pregnancy or she may just be really early in the pregnancy.

Does your SIL know when the date of her last period is? That will give an idea of how far along she would be if she is indeed pregnant. If she could be 6 weeks or more, then she can have an ultrasound to see if there is a yolk sac, fetal pole, and heartbeat. She should get her blood tested every 3 days over a 7-9 day period to see whether or not her hormone (hCG) levels double that corresponds to implantation and early fetal development. There are hCG calculators online that you can use too.

I had a positive home test, saw my doctor a week later at about what was supposed to be 6 or 7 weeks, and I had a yolk sac but no visible heartbeat, along with hCG levels that were questionable, so there was a chance this was a "blighted ovum". My doctor wisely recommended I get my blood drawn three more times over the course of a week and a second ultrasound the following week. My hCG levels doubled and were within the normal range, and the second ultrasound found my baby's heartbeat - turns out I was actually only 6 weeks along. I am now pregnant at 18 weeks with a healthy normal baby girl with a strong heartbeat.

do not assume anything until she can confirm her blood levels over a week's time and an ultrasound to see what's going on inside.

K for a pregnancy test to show up positive I think your levels have to be at least a 5....anything lower than that would be considered not pregnant. once you hit 5 your levels should double everyday after that. If her levels are 26 she is probably only about 4 1/2 to 5 weeks pregnant. Which is fine it just means she is really early on in her pregnancy. As long as her levels continue to rise she is fine but if then do another test and her levels drop then that could be a sign of an early miscarriage. Best of luck.

She is pregnant - either very newly pregnant or it's possible it's a chemical pregnancy (early miscarriage). They will need to do a repeat quantitative beta 48 hours after the first to determine if her levels are increasing (should double ~48 hours in early pg). Nothing would show up on an ultraound with those levels (need to be 2000 or so for visualization of the sac) so it's a waiting game right now. How long after she got a + home test did they do the blood test? has she taken more home tests since? If so and the line is getting darker, that's a good sign. If there was more than a few days between her home test and the blood test then it's more likely that the pg is on it's way out since the most sensitive tests can detect only down to ~10-15 and to double would be 20-30 after 48 hours.

I wouldn't worry. I read on americanpregnancy.org that anything above 25 is considered positive for pregnancy. http://www.americanpregnancy.org/duringpregnancy/hcglevel...

The number should go up for her next test if the pregnancy will "stick."

She is pregnant based on her levels.

They will need to retest in a few days to make sure the levels are doubling to ensure a continued pregnancy.
