Pregnant and Jogging?

Hello,
My name is Rachael, and I have recently started jogging for the first time in my life. (I have asthma and a slight heart condition, but after visiting my regular doctor, I was given the okay to jog.) I am slowly increasing the distance I jog, hoping to level off at about 3 or 4 miles. I am currently jogging 2.6 miles without needing to stop or use an inhaler. (This may not sound like much to big-time runners, but for me, it is pretty good progress!) Anyway, my question involves jogging while pregnant. Have any of you moms out there done this? Did your OB say it was fine? I am not currently pregnant (that I know of!) but my hubby and I are planning to stop preventing and see what the Lord allows. ( : I would like to continue jogging if it is safe for a baby and me since I don't want to lose the progress I've made in the last month.
Thanks for any input!

Rachael

Hi there. I had the same concern as you with my pregnancy last year... it is all up to you. It is definitely safe as long as YOU can do it. As in I have a friend who jogged until 8 months, but when I tried to jog I would get very dizzy and my heartrate would go up so high it was uncomfortable and scary. (And I ran before, few miles few times a week, so it was nothing new.) If you don't exhibit symptoms like that, go for it! And if you do, stop. :) Good luck!

Hi R....I'm R. too! Any exercise you are currently doing when you become pregnant you can continue as long as you are comfortable during your pregnancy. I trained for a 1/2 marathon last summer and then became pregnant. I continued running throughout the first trimester but then it became difficult so I walked...which was fine with me. I did however cut the biking out of my exercise routine b/c I cramped every time I rode a bike. The doctor said it was probably nothing, but why risk anything just for good butt muscles!! I would say to check with your doctor when you become pregnant, but as long as you are not cramping and you feel comfortable it should be fine. Usually they just reccomend you don't start anything new. Good luck!

My OB had told me that if I was a jogger before pregnancy that it was safe to continue it into pregnancy. She just told me I couldn't start any new kind of exercise after getting pregnant. But I don't have asthma or any heart issues. I would simply put a call into your OB and ask her or him if they think you can safely continue. Make sure they know your full medical history so they can make an educated decision. Congrats on your huge accomplishment. Like I said, I DON'T have asthma or a heart condition and I can typically only keep up the jogging for about 2 miles. You should be very proud of yourself! And with a healthier body, it should be easier to conceive when the time is right :) Good luck!

It is my understanding that you can continue to do whatever your body is used to at the time you become pregnant. You would not want to try pushing yourself to a new level. Inform your OB of your activities and he/she will let you know at what point in your pregnancy to stop or tone down your intensity.

Wow 2.6 miles, that's more that I can even attempt and I don't have any medical problems!!! As far as being pregnant, you can jog if you aren't straining yourself. You may have to get a support belt once you get bigger. However, with that being said, make sure you clear it with your doctor first. If you have a high risk pregnancy for some reason, he/she may advice against jogging. Hey live it up now till you get pregnant and go from there!!

I teach Irish dance (very high impact!) and I taught up to 33 and 35 weeks with both my kids. My doc says that you can continue with whatever your body's used to, but that you shouldn't start anything new once you're pregnant. Just listen to your body and don't push youself too hard. Good luck!

Of course your doctor will give you the best advice but if you are healthy and have already been jogging regularly before pregnancy most often you can continue on.
I ran all the way up to 8 months and then the last month I walked everyday on my treadmill anywhere from 2 to 4 miles. In fact I walked two miles the day I gave birth to my son. He was healthy and he came easily with three little pushes.
I recuperated quickly and was back running three weeks afterwards. I also was supposed to be a high risk pregnancy because my son was my first at the age of 42. I had the easiest, uneventful pregnancy that I owe to my excercise and healthy habits.

You can most definitely run will pregnant, as long as it is something you have done before you are pregnant you can keep doing it. (Of course as long as the Dr says you dont have to stop due to some condition). I was in the amrines when pregnant with both of mine and I ran every day, unitl I was liek 8 months pregnant and then I cut it down just because it was getting uncomfortable. But when you do get pregnant stick with it...it will help so much to keep up the exercise!

I have a friend who ran right up until around 38 weeks. The doc said as long as she was on stable ground, in comfortable shoes, stayed hydrated, and had no other complications, that she was fine. Also, if you watch the celeb news, as is my vice, Nicole Kidman did a full spinning class two days before giving birth to her daughter. Exercise is good for us!

Only your doc can answer that one. You might have to switch to lower impact speed walking or biking.

You should definitley consult your OB about this if you do get pregnant and considering your medical history...also if you do get the ok don't push it too far into the pregnancy. I had a friend that did and ended up with preclampsya and a few other problems. You can walk when you are furhter along!

Hi R.,
You should definately talk to your doctor but my SIL did a triatholon when she was 3 months pregnant. After that she didn't want to because it was to hard for her. The bigger she became the more off balance she was when she ran. Good luck and good job, 2.6 miles is something to be proud of.

Hi Rachael! I am a personal trainer and an aerobic instructor, and taught aerobics(at a higher impact level)and lifted weights throughout both my pregnancies. However, I do NOT have asthma, nor do I have any type of heart problem. I think it is absolutely wonderful that you want to stay fit throughout your pregnancy, but my advice to you as a fitness professional would be to take only the advice of your OB. If OB ok's for you to continue..go for it! I think it made my pregnancies go much smoother! Good Luck!!

Hi! Jogging while pregnet is fine as long as you were already doing it before you became preg. I purchased a heart rate monitor to make sure my heart rate did not exceed the recommended 150 bpm for pregnet runners... I ran my last 5K at 5 months preg and had to stop after that because it was no longer comfortable for me to run and it gave me contractions. I do know some who ran right up until delivery. It all depends on a lot of things unique to you and the pregnancy. Keep up the good work! 2.6 miles is nothing to sneeze at! You are close to a 5K which is 3.2 miles!

Hello R.,
Congratiolations on getting fit!!!
First of all your ??? is very good and legitimate that many women have. I get those ???s about which are safe exercises during the childbearing yrs.a lot. I have not personally jogged during any of my 3 pregnancies, but have played volleyball and engaged in water aerobics.I had my children at 36, 40 and 45 yrs. old. I am giving you advice as a physical therapist who specializes in women's health. Further, I have been teaching pregnancy exercise classes for the past 6 yrs. You may do almost any exercises you wish when pregnant or trying to get pregnant especially when you have already been doing them prior. ACOG (American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) guidelines suggest that moderate exercise of 30 min or more, 5-7 times per week (not ex to exhaustion of course) is beneficial in pregnancy. Once pregnant, avoid activities that could cause abdominal trauma, risk of falls or loss of balance like gymnastics, hockey, downhill skiing, horseback riding, and vigorous racquet sports. Avoid saunas hot tubs, scuba diving, double leg raises or straight leg sit-ups. I had a friend yrs. ago who was an high impact aerobic ex. instructor. She cont. during pregnancy until she felt she needed to slow down ( i think around her 6th month she went to low impact). Caution is recommended if you begin a new exercise program during pregnancy.
When you are pregnant you may want to let your MD or nurse midwife know about your exercise habits and they will advise you, depending on how your pregnancy is going.

As far as your asthma is concerned, I can help you if you wish. I have a friend who's daughter is now off her nebulizer and inhaler and swimming competitively as a result of our approach! You see, I also specialize in helping people with all various health issues like yours to achieve optimal wellness and health using a simple nutritional program so you get results in those areas if you wish!
Feel free to call me if you wish more info:cell ###-###-#### or ###-###-####
