Pregnant and in a Wedding!

I recently found out I was pregnant and I'm in a wedding in May. The dress is in at the store and is over $200! I've already paid for it but have not picked it up yet. I have 30 days to pick it up. I don't want to have to pay for another dress...has this happened to anyone before? If so, what did you do?

What can I do next?

I had this exact thing happen... and was able to exchange the dress at David's Bridal for a much larger size (originally ordered a size 6, exchanged for a size 12 or 14). I was 7 months pregnant at the time of the wedding. A fabulous seamstress was able to make alterations and the dress fit beautifully... it was a very simple strapless dress. It'll work out -- don't stress! Enjoy being pregnant and enjoy the wedding -- it'll be memorable!

I suggest you go in for another fitting and see if there's a way to make an elastic band or gathering just below the bodice to allow for the tummy to expand. Perhaps since you haven't picked it up yet, they will allow you to apply the payment towards a different dress. Otherwise, you might consider trying to selling it back to them or a consignee ship or online.

I was in a June Wedding when I was due in August. My dress was altered to fit my belly. The seamstress did a good job but I did feel huge and looked like it in the wedding! ha
The worse part was wearing high heels, my feet were so swollen after the ceremony but the bride was fine with me wearing flip flops at the reception. The dress and shoes cost 200 bucks too but I was lucky that my dress could be altered back to original state for when I was not pregnant.

Hello! I had bought my dress in Jan for a wedding in Oct. In March i find out I'm eggo-preggo. My baby was due in November. LOL! What I ultimately had to do was take it to have it expanded. They had to add more fabric to the dress. But like you, I had already bought & paid for this dress. I had to figure out how to wear it. Good luck!

CONGRATS ON THE BABY!! Exact same thing happened in my best friends wedding...to two of the 4 braidsmaids!
We called the place they got the dresses from (as soon as possible) and ordered extra fabric. I dn't know the cost off hand, but A LOT cheaper than another dress. They had the dress altered closer to the time of the wedding and had side panels put in for the dress to fit.

Hi there. THis has happened to me and I was in two wedding in the same month. I was about 6 months pregnant in each wedding. (obviously lol) I just tried to remember about how much I weighed at the projected time in my pregnancy when the wedding was going to take place and had them order that size dress. everything worked out great for me.

Can you call the store and tell them what happened? Maybe they will let you exchange the dress for a different size? As long as the dress wasn't a special order, I don't see why they would have a problem with it.

M. K - don't panic. I had a dress mis-measured for me once and when it came in, it didn't fit. If they had to cut any length of fabric off the bottom and you still have it, take it back to the store and find out how much their seamstress would charge to add a panel in the seams under your arms. They'll either do a v-shaped panel that won't show, or they'll add a strip on the sides to give you a little extra room in front. This is what they did with my dress and you couldn't tell AT ALL that it had been altered. If you don't have extra fabric, ask one of the other bridesmaids if they do (this way, you'll have fabric from the same dye-lot.) If they don't have any, call the manufacturer (or have the store do it) and order a yard or two based on the seamstress' recommendations. It might not be an exact dye match, but chances are that it will be good enough not to show. They run into this all the time. Most bridal stores are willing to help (for a fee.) Not inexpensive, but better than buying a new dress. Congrats on your new arrival!

Contact the store and explain the situation. Tell them you will need to have the dress altered to fit your growing girth closer to the wedding. If they say it can't be done then tell them you will need a full refund since you can't use the dress.
Generally contact the manufacturer and have enough matching fabric sent to make necessary alterations to the dress so it will work.
Good luck and congratulations.

I was in a wedding when I was 6-7 months pregnant with my second son. (I gained 50 pounds with him.) I think that we knew when I was measured that I was pregnant, but I'm not sure. Anyway, they let it out all the way. In fact, the seamstress suggested to add some more fabric because I was so uncomfortable. But the bride's mother wouldn't allow it. She should have let me because I was about sick by the reception and the groom's dad insisted that I be allowed to change. Very fancy wedding, I had nothing fancy to wear.
Anyway, maybe they'll resize it or something for you.

I would get a refund and get a bigger dress as your belly will surely grow to large for the one in the store

If you haven't picked it up yet, check and see what their policy is. If you can, I would order a new dress in a size or two bigger then have it altered down. Its always easier to alter down than it is to alter up. I know when I was in a wedding and was pregnant, the wedding was in September and I was due in December. We ordered the dresses in May, so I was barely showing. I normally wear a size 6, but at the advice of my seamstress (I didn't have the bridal shop do my alterations) I ordered a size 12. She did have quite a bit of altering to do on it, but in the end it was perfect.

Alot of bridesmaid dresses can be altered bigger or smaller
as long as you invest on a really good seamstress. But first, what style is the dress?

Call the store and order a yard of the same fabric the dress was made from. Then if it doesn't fit for the wedding call a seamstress and they can alter the dress. You can call Alterations Express to find a seamstress if you need one. Good luck and congrats on the baby!

Go to the store, and tell them you need to exchange for a different size. Explain your situation. Most stores, like David's Bridal, have pregnancy padding that you can try on with the dress to find the size you will need. I was in a wedding when pregnant, and the dress was really expensive too. It stunk. I am normally a size 4, and I had to get a size 12...I was 8 months pregnant at the wedding. I was able to sell the dress on eBay, and I got 1/2 my money back. It was GREAT! Also, When I had this whole issue I ordered a 10, but then I kept getting bigger so, I had to exchange sizes to a 12 one month before the wedding. There was no problem in exchanging the size. I think it all depends on the store.

Another thought...ask the bride if she wouldn't mind you getting a maternity dress in the same color. My bride didn't go for it :(, but maybe yours will. Most dresses can be dyed in the exact same colors as the regular bridesmaid dresses.

I would imagine you aren't the 1st customer that has been in this situation. I would simply call the place and explain your circumstance, and see what they say. Maybe the dress can be exchanged or altered when the time comes. Good luck!

Our son got married on September 26, and all our 4 other children were asked to be in their wedding. Our youngest daughter found out she was pregnant and her due date was September 30th. Our daughter still wanted to be in the wedding. We were worried if the baby came early who would we ask to take care of the baby since every one we knew would be at the wedding, and what if it came on the wedding day, we wanted to be pressent at both of our children's big events in their life.

Well everyhting turned out just fine.

Jeff and Brie got married on Friday and Heidi walked down the aisle looking just beautiful. That night after the reception we partied with out of town guests and got to sleep by 2:30 AM. At 6 AM the next morning Bob, our son-in-law called and said Heidi was in labor, and she delivered a beautiful baby girl at 2:30 in the afternoon. The very next day after she was an attendant in her brother's wedding What a weekend, and the great part of it was that her brother and new sister-in-law were able to see her and the baby before they left on their honeymoon, so all things worked out for us. I'm sure things will go well for you too. Good Luck and Congratulations!

I don't think you'll be showing until mid June or July (5 months is usually when most women start to show). Baby bump shouldn't be an issue, just watch what you eat and stay healthy and you shouldn't go up any dress sizes.

Go in and bring it home, try it on every few weeks to make sure you still fit each time.

Good luck.

This happened in my wedding. My sister found out she was pregnant after her dress had already come in. So, she told me she was scared of not being able to pay for another one and I offered to pay for the maternity dress for her. I looked at it like this, when you're paying for a wedding, what's another couple hundred bucks when it decides whether or not someone important to you can be in your wedding? Plus, get this, I ended up asking another friend to be in my wedding. She was thrilled and all of a sudden I wasn't out any money! My sister paid for the dress that my friend ended up wearing, and my friend basically ended up paying for the maternity dress with the money she gave me. It worked out great, and everyone knew what was going on. My friend wasn't upset at all that she was asked after finding out I had an extra dress. We were close, and she understood that originally I hadn't asked her because I had so many family and super close friends in the party already.

When I got married in 2004, I found out after the dresses were ordered that my sister , and friend both were pregnant and due in Feb. of 05'. My bridesmaids(Friend, and family are on the short side) , so any extra material that there may be could be used for your dress. Our dress was discontinued after our orders.

First, congratulations!

Second, tell the bride, and tell the store immediately! They may be able to order fabric from the manufacturer, in a proper dyelot, so that gussets can be made in the dress to accommodate your new shape! This is a standard procedure.

3rd choice - tell the bride you want to cancel, and let her find someone else in your size to be a bridesmaid, and let them reimburse you for your costs so far.

I suggest getting the fabric and having gussets made.

Best wishes, whatever your choice!

I would have the dress altered to fit you when you stand up in the wedding, bring along a pillow that would represent your bump and hopefully the seamstress can work with you.

It happened to me on for my own wedding. Bridal shops are pretty used to this happening. When you pick up your dress let them know your pregnant, they can fit you with your dressand use a bunch of pins. you will end up having to go in about once a month than once a week up untill the wedding than they wont fully alter the dress untill right b4 the wedding. you shouldnt have to buy another one

The same thing happened to me and I was about 5 months along at the time so it seems like it is pretty similar, I was okay becasue they could let the dress out up to two sizes and they added a bit of elasitc to the empire waist line. I guess it will depend on the dress. If you go to the shop, they should be able to help. They told me it happens more than people would think. Good luck and congrats on the new addition.
