Pregnant Again! No Insurance...

My husband recently lost his job- along w/ medical insurance, and of course a week later we found out I am pregnant w/ our 3rd baby. A baby is always great news, but our situation at this time is very stressful. I have diabetes type 1- insulin pump dependant and my other 2 pregnancies were considered high risk due to this.

My 2 children (now 3 and 1) are both healthy and a blessing to our family. I want the same for our new one. I have an appt w/ the department of health to see what kind of assistance they can provide. We have already applied for Medicaid and my husband has interviewed w/ several good prospects.

I was wondering if anyone out there knows of any assistance for pregnant mothers or their young children that I can pursue during this time of need.

Thanks,
M.

So What Happened?

Finally the Medicaid went thru fine and everything is covered at 100% up to 2 month post delivery. This covers the high risk involving the diabetes and all of those needs including my medication (which was getting very expensive!). The baby will also be covered once he/she is born for 1 yr. Medicaid is actually covering the whole fam- It was a hard process but definetly worth looking into. WIC also helps.

Thank you all for your advice and support :)

Hi M.,
I hope you are doing well. It sounds like you are taking the the right steps so far. My daughter has Diabetes 1 also, so I've been looking for care. You might try contacting the University of Miami School of Medicine- I seem to remember reading that they provide service regardless of ability to pay, or they may be able to help you. They also do a lot of research with Diabetes, and it looks like their OB/GYN department primarily serves women with high risk pregnancies. I hope this helps. M.

Sorry to hear about your lack of insurance situation. Not sure if you checked into this but often times the insurance you had can be extended through COBRA. Check with your husband's former employer. below are some links that may be able to point you in the right direction. I would also check with your local hospital(s) and the county offices where you live. There are generally clinics that work on a sliding or reduced cost scale in major metropolitan areas.

You can also try a midwife/birthing center. They are substantially less costwise, but the care you receive is more personal. I have 3 children - the first one I delivered w/ an OB/GYN and the other 2 w/ midwives (but at the hospital). My experience w/ the midwives was so nice - they stay with you the whole time in the delivery room, never leaving your side and they really work to help you and your spouse through the whole process.

A good friend of mine used the same midwives that I did but delivered at the birthing center (all 4 of her children). She said her experience there was nothing less than beautiful.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Hi Messy how are you, I hope all is well with you. I just want to tell you in short. God don't make no mistakes. You and your husband just went through with an sexual act and God was waiting for the perfect opportunity to usher in another bundle of Joy. Just think about the people that are trying to have babies, the proof is in the putting, they have sex every night some of them waiting for that day. And God keep saying, not yet. But you, there must be something very special about you and your husband God saw fit to duplicate you over and over again.

M., I am out of work, too, and let me tell you, I feel so blessed that we live in Florida! I'm in Broward County, but this is statewide, I am going to WorkForce One. They have everything that he needs there to find a better job than he had before, a more stable one like with the government so you all don't need to worry about layoffs ever again. M., congratulations on your pregnancy, I am so excited for you!

I know I have days too where I get sidetracked by worry, that is normal and understandable. I feel it and mourn for a few minutes when I need to. But then I think on all that I have to be grateful for - especially my family. I am never alone, and niether are you :) The reality is that we live in a wonderful place with awesome resources and amazing employment opportunities. I'm sending a hug and good thoughts your way, I hope you feel it!

There are places on line that you can get INS. I thought that I had to get it bc my husband lost his job. I cannot remember the company or website, but I would start by going to google.com and type in "Health Insurance for Pregant Women". I will try to think of the company.

I was in the same situation! I say, medicaid should approve you. All you have to make sure you have is proof of income, or lack there of.... that means, they want a letter of unemployment from the both you and your husband. Even though he's looking, have him apply for unemployment if he hasn't already. I applied twice to medicaid because the first time they denied me because i didn't have that paper for my husband. But second time, it shows proof that you really have no other income coming in at the moment and they will approve you and most likely your other kids as well, since you stay home with them. Good luck.

Aside from Medicaid-(which does NOT end when you have the baby - it just transfers over to the child-I know for SURE because I was on it until about a month ago), if you don't qualify for that there's Florida Kidcare. I'm not sure if Kidcare does pregnant women or not. You'd have to check into that if you didn't qualify for Medicaid.

Don't forget about WIC too. You can get on WIC as soon as you are pregnant, and they provide milk, cheese, peanut butter, cereal, etc. and when the baby comes they provide formula, then milk, cheese, etc.

Aside from that, there's also always Food Stamps or Section 8 (a rental assistance program). I hope this helps.

Hi M.! My name is M. and I had a similar situation with lack of insurance when my husband and I moved to Florida last october. He started a new job in November but insurnce didn't begin for about 4 months. I had been planning on going back to school so I was working part-time at a restaurant where insurance wasn't available. We never thought about medicaid until it was mentioned to us at my first ob/gyn appt.
There are many different levels of medicaid to help pregnant women in your situation. Our household income was too high to qualify for the medicaid that includes food stamps, etc.which we didn't need anyway(the range for that is about 15-20,000 a year) but we certainly couldn't afford to pay for all of the expenses ourselves. We thought that we were out of luck but we found that we qualified for a temporary medicaid in which pretty much everything was covered until our insurance started. They took care of doctors visits, bloodwork and even a trip to the hospital-I tripped over a garden hose and fell in my driveway. There are about 3 to 4 different options of coverage that you can qualify for with medicaid. There are clinics and doctors offices that accept medicaid. I know Dr. Skinner and Dr. Jones at Healthpark medical center-Lee physicians group work with this service. I know this can be a scary situation but you have more resources than you think. Good luck with everything!

it sounds like you are eligible for Medicaid because you are pregnant and have no insurance. It all depends on your income, but single moms usually get a break. It pays for EVERYTHING. It's really nice not to get any doctor bills when your trying to prepare for a new baby on a limited budget. Here's the address to the Florida Department of Children and Families website: http://www.myflorida.com/cf_web/
Check it out and see if you qualify. If you are approved they give you lots of info on how and where to find care.

I would suggest applying for medicaid. You need a few documents to do this, though I'm not sure which ones. You can call your local Department of Children and Family Service Office for this info and they will make you an appointment. I'm not sure where you live, or I could give you more info. I went through the same thing. My husband was working, but his company didn't offer insurance at all. Getting pregnant was a surprise since we were using birth control. I actually hugged the lady when she told me that my baby would be covered. it took a lot of strain off of me. I hope this info helps you.

Dont give up!!!! I had my daughter now 2 via state money. I was not married but did have my own health ins however no prego coverage. I went through all the paperwork with the health dept. It is hard when you sit there and feel like you don't belong there but its worth it. I even got a letter 1/2 way through saying that i was canceled ..... 5mts prego and now they wanted to cancel me!!!! Mix up they said .... someone pressed the wrong key and i was now getting childsupport (this was my first baby mind you) and I had a trust fund! Their mistake but I had to go through all the paper work again! Don't give up! I got to go to any Dr I wanted to as long as they took medicade. I went to a very up scale place I love .... Institute for women's health and body!!!! And delivered at Wellington. I never paid a dime to have my child! I believe that people like us who have given to the system and our families have deserve to be able to get the help when we need it and not feel bad!!! Good luck!!!! and keep smiling things always happen for a reason!

I was on Medicaid for my pregnancy and my son still is. I did live in NC at the time but I think the experience would be the same. It was a winderful experience. I had the same exact care as all pregnant moms, the health dept. had exceptional equiptment, amazing doctors who usually worked in their own office and voluteered there. Everything was 100% free. I know people who had great insurance and are STILL paying for the delivery of there child, even years later! I never paid a dime for the same treatment. The only negative was that you see about 3-5 doctors instead of the same one every time but it didnt bother us. I will definitely do it again!!

M.,

Congratulations!

I am not sure of any other programs, however, if medicaid refuses you, ask them about share of cost medicaid. I was in a situation similar to yours, and they told me we made to much money. I think it was somewhere around 100.00 to much a month? Anyways, we struggled through out my entire pregnancy with doctor bills and so on. After my daughter was born, she was very ill, and needed major medical help. She was in intensive care for 2 weeks. Well, during this, a social worker that I met in the hospital asked why they had never put me on share of cost medicaid. I refiled, and mentioned share of cost, and what do you know, all was taken care for. They calculated our monthly income, and determined how much medical expenses we could afford. Once it hit exceeded that amount, medicaid stepped in and paid it all in full. So, there wasnt even a deductable that needed paid from our end. I am not sure if this will help you or not, but it's something worth mentioning. Good luck with everything!

Congratulations on baby #3! Given your medical history you certainly don't need any extra stress right now. Everyone else has already suggested everything I would but I also wanted to mention COBRA. I know it can be expensive and you would only want to use it as your last resort but it can be a temporary answer until your husband gets another job and insurance.

My husband just recently switched jobs. We are on COBRA for 3 months until his benefits kick in at his new company. Thankfully his new company is paying the COBRA monthly rate for us because it is $959.47/month for our small family of three. :)

Medicaid Provides for low and no income families, especially pregnant women. You should head down to your local department of children and families to sign up. You would qualify due to your situation. You coverage would be free. Have a great day!!

My name is A.. I have a 12yr old daughter and one on the way. I don't have insurance either. Unfortunately I don't income qualify for Medicaid, so I have to pay everything on my own. ($2800 for the Doctor and $2300 for the Hospital Delivery.)
That is the self-pay rate. They charge the insurance companies much more. Anyway, I hope this helps. Take care.

There is a medicaid plan for pregnant women called SOBRA that allows you to get prenantal care for 45 days while your paperwork is being processed for medicaid. Ask about this when you go to your appointment. Where do you live? If you are in Palm Beach County I can give you some numbers to contact to speed things up for you.

I just wanted to make a quick comment concerning the suggestion to use the COBRA insurance extension. My husband's company was facing bancruptcy not long ago and it was looking like it would be shut down. Luckily, even with the bancruptcy the company is still up and running. At the time this came up we checked into many of the programs discussed on this board including COBRA. In our circumstance the premium for using this option was going to be far more then our regular insurance, and there is no concievable way we would have been able to afford those premiums with no job. I believe it was supposed to be around $600/ month. That's a huge chunk even with a decent job, and most likely impossible without a job or other major source of income.

Thanks,
V.
