Pregnancy After Chemotherapy

I was diagnosed with non hodgkins lymphoma last June, I underwent surgery to remove one ovary and chemotherapy. I finished my treatment in November. Previous to getting diagnosed I had been trying to get pregnant. I was told that my treatment would likely limit my fertility. I wasn't expecting to get pregnant easily but I just found out that I am pregnant, total surprise!.. I am happy to be pregnant, but also very scared.. I don't know if my treatments are going to effect the baby, it is so soon... Does anybody have an experience that they can share? I already have an appointment with my OBGYN and Oncologist.

What can I do next?

Two of my step sisters went through chemo and beat cancer I believe it was non Hodgkins lymphoma (but not 100% sure). They both did chemo though before they had kids. Now they both have three children each...all six kids are fine and one sister is going for number 4 later this year.

All the kids are perfect happy healthy kids.

I know both of them were not sure if they would be able to have children after treatment.

Hope this makes you feel better!!

Your post is really interesting for me because I went through 5 months of chemo for Hodgkins almost 2 years ago. Much different chemo regimens (you were probably on CHOP or r-CHOP, I was on ABVD).

In my case, I was told that my chemo drugs won't affect my fertility. I am, though, scared to conceive (despite being given the green light by both my Oncologist, and 2 other leading lymphoma experts) because my diagnosis came immediately after having my second child.

I don't think the Chemo drugs will be an issue. They should be well out of your system.

I would recommend having the conversation with both of the physicians you mention as well as a leading Lymphoma expert at MD Anderson in Houston (one of the best cancer centers world wide).

His name is Dr. Anas Younes, and he's very active online via Facebook and Twitter - you can look him up on Facebook. He has a fan page, you can like him, and he'll respond very quickly with questions that are legitimate.
His twitter name is @DrAnasYounes - I sent him a question about how long to wait after treatment to conceive, and he responded in about 20 minutes.

Good luck with your pregnancy and your follow-up. I hope your lymphoma is gone for good (mine, too).

My daughter went through non-hodgkins lymphoma and chemo also. She was told that her chemo would make her sterile. About a year after finishing chemo - surprise, she turned up pregnant! She had a textbook perfect pregnancy, although the baby had IUGR and her water broke at 34 weeks. He only weighed a little over 3 pounds, but didn't have any problems at all. He is now 15 months old, and completely caught up developmentally. He's behind on height and weight, but our family is small and thin, so who knows if it is the IUGR or genetics? He babbles, says a handful of words, walked at 12 months, climbs like a monkey, and is the world's cutest little boy EVER!

My daughter has had a heart transplant, so the doctor's were much more concerned with her heart and the meds related to that than they were with her chemo.

Hi-
Congrats on your pregnancy!! My sister-in-law went through the same thing - 12 yrs ago. She has been cancer-free since treatment and has 2 beautiful little girls - after they told her she probably wouldn't be able to conceive at all!!!

Both girls are perfect.

Talk to your doctors - but I'm guessing they will say everything is fine. Enjoy your pregnancy. :)

God Bless you (and you too Dana!)
