hi everyone, i started potty training my son 3 days ago and i'm very happy about the results, i started putting on cotton underwear instead of diapers and he had a few accidents then after i ran out of underwear i decided that he needed to wear nothing and the first time he ran to his potty and he's been doing it these last 3 days, the first day he didnt have a bm, the second day he did it in his underwear and today he did it in his potty, the thing is that today we went to the store and he was wearing a diaper and i noticed that he was very unconfortable and after asking him many times if he needed to pee he said yes, but the store didn't have a bathroom and i need your advice, because i need to know what to do when he needs to go in a public restroom, i am afraid of making him seat in these places that usually aren't very clean because he can't pee standing yet, please tell me if you have any tips so his potty training doesn't take a step backwards, thanks.

What can I do next?

Hi C., as a mother of 2 male children there is no way I would let my children sit on public facilties either. In situations like that you are going to have to do it for him. I understand he can't stand to do it on his own yet but there is no way he can go to the restroom and you not help him. That is the best time to show him correctly how to use the bathroom like a male should.

It never fails... kids always have to go at the most akward times. My husband and I have stopped along the highway to get out with my son to go potty. You're going to end up having to use a public restroom eventually, so I would look for travel sized toilet covers. I have seen them in various travel sections of grocery stores. You could also try to find travel size anti-bacterial wipes to keep in your purse as well. This way you can wipe things down and cover the seat for your little angel. Good luck!!

I am in the process of potty training with my 2 year old son also. Sometimes he stands but mostly sits at this point. I found a foldable travel toddler seat at onestepahead.com for $12. He likes using it when we are out. He can unfold it and place it on the regular potty. All you need to do is to put him on it. It even has handles for him to hold on to for security (and not having to touch the regular potty at all). It comes with a ziploc bag for storage but any bag will work. It is very compact, about the size of a diaper! Good luck.

Well, they have those Clorox wipes now and they even have little seat insert type things for your toilet... carry both and wipe both before and after each use... they both seem to be small enough to fit in a diaper bag...

just a thought

good luck

Congrats on your success!!! I carry a potty in my car for just that reason! We've used it a lot--and it's always clean! You can also buy a little fold up potty that just sits on the top of the toilet. I think they're about 10 bucks and they carry them at Toy R Us and Target...And, I'm sure other places.

You mentioned that the store you were in didn't have a bathroom. What I've learned is that stores that don't have a public bathroom will almost always allow pregnant women and toddlers to use their facilities. I guess the trick is to look pathetic....I guess I'm pretty good at that....

Good luck! Hope this helps!

hi C.-
ever since my son learned how to pee standing up, it has made public bathroom use easier. however, for bm's i have bought these big disposable toilet seat covers. i bought them at buy buy baby and they are also available at babies r' us and other stores like that. these are elmo and the underside sticks to the seat so they dont go anywhere. They are also very large and fold over the outside of the toilet becasue children tend to touch the sides of the toilet when using them. For times when you are on the road, they also make these on the go potties for like the back of the car or something, just a little portable potty bucket thing. i know that whole public bathroom use thing can pretty scary at first, but your son is doing a great job so far!!!

I have a potty seat that folds in 1/4ths so it fits easily in a diaper bag or purse. It's very handy.

Most Baby depots or childrens stores have toilet seats that fold up easily for traveling that fit right over top of a public toilet seat if your little one doesnt stand up to potty yet, or if its unclean.
