I'd read here some time ago about a potty training video that has been very helpful to many of you. Can you please remind me of the name? I'd also like to be reminded about early potty training and do not see a category for this subject.

So What Happened?

Thank you for the ideas and feedback. I'm not quite sold on the "early" training, but my daughter is pregnant and having some difficulties, so we thought we'd do what we can to at least acclimate the sister-to-be to the potty chair while I am available to help, and it's going okay. If it cuts down on the diaper changes even a little, that will be a huge help. Mornings have been changes every hour or less, and the girl is aware of when she's going, so we just decided to use that to our advantage. I appreciate the help narrowing the video selections, the reminder about timing, and age of voluntary muscle control, etc. Thank you so much!!

Sorry I don't know any videos but I read a great book called Diaper Free Before 3 by Jill Lekovic. You don't have to read it cover to cover. You can just read chapters or sections of chapters and still get a lot out of it. The book has some great ways to start early potty training.

The ideas of "readiness" isn't supported in the literature. Before the invention of disposable diapers (1960s) the average age of potty training was 18 months. Mostly because women (or child care providers) were very motivated to potty train their children instead of wash cloth diapers. Since the introduction of disposable diapers, the average age has increased to 36+ months!

Potty training takes time, patience and energy - mostly from the care provider.

Good luck!

Hi C.,

My son didn't even want to discuss potty training (2 3/4) old. I was going to wait until the summer and let him run around with just a shirt on outside. But now we want him to start preschool in the new year.

I tried a couple different videos and he wanted nothing to do with them. I think they were too focused on the potty. My friend recommended "Bear in the big blue house potty time!" It was created by Jim Henson's (Muppets) crew and he loves it. Very cute and it covers aspects like not making it to the potty in time. This has helped reassure him when he doesn't make it in time.

Best of luck!

I've never used videos, so can't comment on them other than when doing a Google search, I saw that there are many.

If you've noticed that the child has a pattern of pooping after a specific meal or time of day, have them sit on the potty and try to catch it. Then give praise for it. They will understand what its for... keeping in mind that the sphincter muscles are not matured enough to have voluntary control until about 18 months.

I question the 'early potty training' as being something convenient for the adult... but with unrealistic expectations that could possibly lead to frustration and stress for all... with potential long term emotional damage for the child. You can't push the river...

Patience with nature's rhythms is a better goal then 'early potty training'.

We have the "Elmo's Potty Time" video, and our 2.5 yr old son loves it. We've been pretty mellow with potty training...got him a potty about 8 months ago, had him sit on it about once a day for the past 2-3 months. He started using it more frequently in the past month, and this weekend he started wearing underwear for a few hours a day.

Seems to be going well for us using a low key approach, but that's our nature (and our toddler's!), but I guess it's not "early" potty training. I have noticed that when people try to do it early, they often end up spending a huge amount of time, energy and stress on it.

Best of luck!
